Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods and systems for automatically pulsing different aspiration levels to an ocular probe are disclosed. The probe may be a phacoemulsification probe. A first aspiration level, supplied by a first pump, may be applied to the probe simultaneously with ultrasonic energy. A second aspiration level, supplied by a second pump, may be automatically switched from the first aspiration level, and applied to the probe in a pulsed manner.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A system for removing material from within an eye, the system comprising: a probe having a distal tip insertable into the eye, the distal tip having an aspiration port; a console coupled with the aspiration port along an aspiration pathway, wherein the console comprises a processor and a pump system, and wherein the pump system comprises a first pump for providing a first aspiration level and a second pump for providing a second aspiration level, wherein the second pump is capable of a higher pump rate than the first pump, and wherein the second aspiration level is higher than the first aspiration level, and wherein the processor is configured to cycle between the first aspiration level and the second aspiration level according to a predetermined duty cycle by controlling the first pump and the second pump sufficiently to achieve a transient-induced effect to break-up the material for aspiration through the aspiration port, the cycling is triggered by detecting that the aspiration port is sufficiently occluded. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the distal tip is energized with ultrasonic energy during the first aspiration level. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the distal tip is not energized with ultrasonic energy during the second aspiration level. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cycle between the first aspiration level and the second aspiration level is based on activation and deactivation of at least one of the first pump and the second pump.
