Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An adjustable prosthetic socket includes proximal and distal ends and an axis extending between the proximal and distal ends. A distal base is adapted to support a distal portion of a residual limb and is located at the distal end of the socket. First and second spines extend upward from the distal base that define at least part of a circumference of the socket about the axis. A proximal support is connected to the second spine and arranged to distribute pressure from the second spine over a portion of the residual limb. A tensioning system is operatively connected to the first and second spines and arranged to selectively adjust the circumference of the socket. The tensioning system includes a dial tensioner connected to the first spine.

The invention claimed is: 1. An adjustable prosthetic socket having proximal and distal ends and an axis extending between the proximal and distal ends, comprising: a distal base attachable to a prosthetic pylon and defining at least in part a limb-receiving portion; first and second spines extending upwardly from the distal base toward the proximal end, the first spine and the second spine connected to the distal base; wherein the first spine includes first and second posterior vertebrae rigidly connected to one another to form the first spine, one of the first and second posterior vertebrae defines a distally extending post and another one of the first and second posterior vertebrae defines a longitudinal opening adapted to receive the distally extending post, the first and second posterior vertebrae each including first and second flaps extending laterally from opposed sides of the first spine; at least one second vertebra connected to the second spine and having first and second flaps extending laterally relative to opposed sides of the second spine, the at least one first vertebra and the at least one second vertebra overlapping one another to define a circumference of the socket about the axis. 2. The socket of claim 1 , further comprising a tensioning system operatively connected to at least one of the first and second spines to articulate said at least one of the first and second spines relative to one another to selectively adjust the circumference of the socket. 3. The socket of claim 2 , wherein the tensioning system including a dial tensioner. 4. The socket of claim 3 , wherein the dial tensioner is connected to the at least one of the first and second spines. 5. The socket of claim 2 , wherein the tensioning system includes at least one tensioning element operatively connected to the at least one of the first and second spines. 6. The socket of claim 5 , wherein the at least one tensioning element comprises a cable. 7. The socket of claim 1 , further comprising a proximal support connected to a proximal end of one of the first and second spines, the proximal support defining an inner surface arranged to contact and support a part of a residual limb. 8. The socket of claim 7 , wherein the inner surface of the proximal support includes a cushioning material. 9. The socket of claim 7 , wherein the inner surface of the proximal support defines a shape arranged to substantially correspond to a shape of the residual limb. 10. The socket of claim 7 , wherein the proximal support is arranged to extend a circumferential distance about the residual limb. 11. The socket of claim 1 , wherein the first and second flaps of the at least one second vertebra form a continuous, smooth inner surface. 12. The socket of claim 1 , wherein the first and second flaps of the at least one second vertebra are breathable and define a plurality of perforations, and are formed from a semi-rigid material. 13. An adjustable prosthetic socket having proximal and distal ends and an axis extending between the proximal and distal ends, comprising: a distal base attachable to a prosthetic pylon and defining at least in part a limb-receiving portion; first and second spines extending upwardly from the distal base toward the proximal end, the first spine and the second spine connected to the distal base; at least one first vertebra connected to the first spine and extending laterally relative to first spine, the at least one first vertebra having first and second flaps extending laterally relative to opposed sides of the first spine; wherein the second spine includes first and second anterior vertebrae hingedly connected to one another to form the second spine, one of the first and second anterior vertebrae defines a distal hinge connector including a hinge pin and another one of the first and second posterior vertebrae defines a proximal hinge connector adapted to receive the hinge pin of the distal hinge connector such that the first and second anterior vertebrae hingedly connect at the proximal and distal hinge connectors, the first and second anterior vertebrae each including first and second flaps extending laterally from opposed sides of the second spine. 14. The socket of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the first and second spines is connected to the distal base by a hinge connection such that the at least one of the first and second spines is slidable inward and outward relative to the other of the first and second spines. 15. The socket of claim 13 , wherein the first and second flaps of the at least one first vertebra form a continuous, smooth inner surface. 16. The socket of claim 13 , wherein the first and second flaps of the at least one first vertebra are breathable and define a plurality of perforations, and are formed from a semi-rigid material. 17. An adjustable prosthetic socket having proximal and distal ends and an axis extending between the proximal and distal ends, comprising: a distal base attachable to a prosthetic pylon and defining at least in part a limb-receiving portion; first and second spines extending upwardly from the distal base toward the proximal end, the first spine and the second spine connected to the distal base; wherein the first spine includes first and second posterior vertebrae rigidly connected to one another to form the first spine, one of the first and second posterior vertebrae defines a distally extending post and another one of the first and second posterior vertebrae defines a longitudinal opening adapted to receive the distally extending post, the first and second posterior vertebrae each including first and second flaps extending laterally from opposed sides of the first spine; wherein the second spine includes first and second anterior vertebrae hingedly connected to one another to form the second spine, one of the first and second anterior vertebrae defines a distal hinge connector including a hinge pin and another one of the first and second posterior vertebrae defines a proximal hinge connector adapted to receive the hinge pin of the distal hinge connector such that the first and second anterior vertebrae hingedly connect at the proximal and distal hinge connectors, the first and second anterior vertebrae each including first and second flaps extending laterally from opposed sides of the second spine. 18. The socket of claim 17 , wherein the first and second flaps of the first and second anterior and posterior vertebrae form a continuous, smooth inner surface. 19. The socket of claim 17 , wherein the first and second flaps of the first and second anterior and posterior vertebrae are breathable and define a plurality of perforations, and are formed from a semi-rigid material.
