Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Hot melt sequins and methods of applying these sequins are disclosed. A method of attaching two components includes stitching a hot melt sequin to one of the components and heating the hot melt sequin to bond the two components together. Sequins can also be applied to articles to create structural elements such as heel counters, toe covers, and lace cages. Sequins can be applied in 1D, 2D, and 3D patterns as well as in dispersive patterns. Sequins can be applied to vary the abrasion properties of a portion of an article.

The invention claimed is: 1. An article of footwear, comprising: a layer and a plurality of sequins attached to the layer; the plurality of sequins being comprised of a hot melt material; wherein at least two sequins of the plurality of sequins are stacked atop one another in a vertical direction perpendicular to the layer; wherein each sequin of the plurality of sequins has an approximately two-dimensional shape with a thickness that is less than a length and a width of the sequin; wherein each sequin of the plurality of sequins includes an opening and wherein the openings of the at least two sequins stacked atop one another in the vertical direction are aligned with each other; and wherein the at least two sequins stacked atop one another in the vertical direction are sewn to the layer by a thread that extends through the openings of each of the at least two sequins. 2. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of sequins further comprises at least two additional sequins that are arranged in a linear one-dimensional chain that intersects with the at least two sequins stacked atop one another in the vertical direction. 3. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , further comprising a pattern of stacked sequins attached to the layer; and wherein the pattern of stacked sequins includes the at least two sequins stacked atop one another in the vertical direction and at least one additional stack of two or more sequins of the plurality of sequins that are stacked atop one another in the vertical direction. 4. The article of footwear according to claim 3 , wherein the at least one additional stack of two or more sequins comprises at least three sequins. 5. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein the article of footwear includes another layer, and wherein at least two additional sequins of the plurality of sequins are disposed between, and attached to, both the layer and the another layer. 6. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of sequins form a two-dimensional structural element on the article upon cooling after melting. 7. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of sequins form a three-dimensional structural element on the article upon cooling after melting. 8. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein at least three sequins of the plurality of sequins are stacked atop one another in the vertical direction perpendicular to the layer. 9. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein four or more sequins of the plurality of sequins are stacked atop one another in the vertical direction perpendicular to the layer. 10. An article of footwear, comprising: a substrate layer; and a plurality of sequins attached to the substrate layer in a stacked arrangement along a vertical direction perpendicular to the substrate layer, wherein the plurality of sequins are comprised of a hot melt material; wherein each sequin of the plurality of sequins has an approximately two-dimensional shape with a thickness that is less than a length and a width of the sequin; wherein each sequin of the plurality of sequins includes an opening and wherein the openings of the at least two sequins stacked atop one another in the vertical direction are aligned with each other; and wherein the plurality of sequins in the stacked arrangement are sewn to the substrate layer by a thread that extends through the openings of each sequin of the plurality of sequins in the stacked arrangement. 11. The article of footwear according to claim 10 , wherein the plurality of sequins includes: a first stack of two or more sequins attached to the substrate layer in a stacked arrangement along the vertical direction by a thread that extends through the openings of each sequin in the first stack; and a second stack of two or more sequins attached to the substrate layer in a stacked arrangement along the vertical direction by a thread that extends through the openings of each sequin in the second stack. 12. The article of footwear according to claim 11 , wherein the first stack comprises a different number of sequins from the second stack. 13. The article of footwear according to claim 12 , wherein the second stack comprises four or more sequins. 14. The article of footwear according to claim 10 , wherein the plurality of sequins form a three-dimensional structural element on the article upon cooling after melting. 15. An article of footwear, comprising: an upper; and an abrasion resistance region disposed on a portion of the upper; the abrasion resistance region comprising a plurality of sequins attached to an exterior layer of the upper; the plurality of sequins being comprised of a hot melt material; wherein at least two sequins of the plurality of sequins are stacked atop one another in a vertical direction perpendicular to the exterior layer; wherein each sequin of the plurality of sequins has an approximately two-dimensional shape with a thickness that is less than a length and a width of the sequin; wherein each sequin of the plurality of sequins includes an opening and wherein the openings of the at least two sequins stacked atop one another in the vertical direction are aligned with each other; and wherein the at least two sequins stacked atop one another in the vertical direction are sewn to the exterior layer by a thread that extends through the openings of each of the at least two sequins. 16. The article of footwear according to claim 15 , further comprising a pattern of stacked sequins attached to the exterior layer; and wherein the pattern of stacked sequins includes the at least two sequins stacked atop one another in the vertical direction and at least one additional stack of two or more sequins of the plurality of sequins that are stacked atop one another in the vertical direction. 17. The article of footwear according to claim 15 , wherein each sequin comprises a hot melt portion comprised of the hot melt material and an abrasion resistant portion comprised of an abrasion resistant material. 18. The article of footwear according to claim 17 , wherein the hot melt portion bonds the abrasion resistant portion of each sequin to the exterior layer.
