A variety of electrode pad cartridges are described that are suitable for use with a defibrillator. In one aspect the cartridge includes a housing and a tray that carries a pair of defibrillation electrode pads. At least a portion of the tray is slidably received within the cartridge housing such that the electrode pads are received within the housing. The tray is configured to be slidably pulled from the cartridge housing while the housing remains attached to the defibrillator to provide access to the electrode pads to facilitate use of the defibrillator.

What is claimed is: 1. An electrode pad cartridge configured for attachment to a defibrillator, wherein the electrode pad cartridge does not include any battery and comprises: a cartridge housing configured to be removably attached to the defibrillator; first and second defibrillation electrode pads; and a tray that carries the defibrillation electrode pads, wherein at least a portion of the tray is slidably received within the cartridge housing such that the electrode pads are received within the cartridge housing, the tray being configured to be slidably pulled from the cartridge housing while the cartridge housing remains attached to the defibrillator to provide access to the defibrillation electrode pads to facilitate use of the defibrillator. 2. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 1 further comprising a latch feature configured to engage a complimentary mechanism on the defibrillator to help removably attach the cartridge to the defibrillator. 3. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 1 wherein the tray includes a drawer box with a drawer chamber that holds the defibrillation electrode pads. 4. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 3 further comprising a foil secured to the drawer box to enclose the drawer chamber. 5. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 4 wherein the foil includes a pull tab configured to be gripped by a user to facilitate tearing the foil away from at least a portion of the drawer box to provide access to the defibrillation electrode pads. 6. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 4 wherein: the pad tray further comprises an exit feature through which electrode pad wires coupled to the electrode pads pass; and the pad tray further includes a seal that cooperates with the foil to seal the exit feature, wherein the foil is additionally secured to the exit feature seal. 7. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 1 wherein the tray includes a face plate that matches a contour of the defibrillator when the electrode pad cartridge is attached to the defibrillator with the tray in a fully inserted position. 8. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 7 further comprising a pull tab that extends outward from the face plate, the pull tab being configured to be gripped by a user to pull the tray out of the cartridge housing. 9. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 1 wherein the pad tray further comprises: an exit feature through which electrode pad wires coupled to the electrode pads pass; and a wire comb that separates the wires, the wire comb being positioned in the exit feature. 10. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 1 wherein the tray further comprises a magnet carried by the tray to facilitate detection of the tray when the tray is seated in the cartridge housing. 11. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 1 further comprising a pair of registration features extending outward from a top surface of the cartridge housing, the registration features being configured to be received in complementary recesses in the defibrillator. 12. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 1 further comprising a connector plug that extends outward from a top surface of the cartridge housing, the connector plug configured to be received in a complementary recess in the defibrillator when the cartridge is installed on the defibrillator. 13. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 12 wherein the connector includes a pair of rivets, each rivet having an exposed head and engaging a ring terminal on an electrode wire coupled to an associated one of the electrode pads. 14. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 1 wherein: the tray includes a pad carrier; and the first defibrillation electrode pad is adhered to a first side of the pad carrier and the second defibrillation electrode pad is adhered to a second side of the pad carrier such that the first and second defibrillation electrode pads are adhered to opposite sides of the pad carrier. 15. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 14 wherein each electrode pad has an associated seal that seals the electrode pad to the pad carrier, and wherein the seal is not broken by the withdrawal of the tray form the cartridge housing and the seal is broken by the removal of such electrode pad from the pad carrier. 16. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 1 further comprising a security chip mounted on the cartridge housing that contains information about the electrode pad cartridge, the security chip being configured to be read by the defibrillator. 17. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 16 wherein the information about the electrode pad cartridge includes a cartridge type identifier configured to indicate a type of the defibrillation electrode pads, wherein the defibrillation electrode pad type is selected from the group consisting of: an adult pad type; a pediatric pad type; a training pad type; and a universal pad type. 18. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 16 wherein the security chip is not mounted on a connector configured to electrically couple the electrode pads to the defibrillator. 19. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 1 further comprising scissors carried by the tray. 20. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 19 wherein the tray further includes a scissors retention feature configured to hold the scissors in place. 21. An electrode pad cartridge configured for attachment to a defibrillator, the electrode pad cartridge comprising: a cartridge housing having a connector plug that extends outward from a first surface of the cartridge housing, the connector plug configured to be received in a complementary recess in the defibrillator when the cartridge is installed on the defibrillator; first and second defibrillation electrode pads; a tray that carries the defibrillation electrode pads, wherein at least a portion of the tray is slidably received within the cartridge housing such that the electrode pads are received within the cartridge housing, the tray being configured to be slidably pulled from the cartridge housing while the cartridge housing remains attached to the defibrillator to provide access to the defibrillation electrode pads to facilitate use of the defibrillator; and wherein the connector plug extends outward in a direction that is transverse to a direction that the tray is slidably pulled from the cartridge housing. 22. An electrode pad cartridge as recited in claim 21 wherein the connector plug includes a pair of electrical contacts, each electrical contact arranged to engage a corresponding electrical contact on the defibrillator to facilitate electrically connecting the defibrillator to the electrode pads. 23.
