Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An article of footwear with an upper including a ribbon structure is disclosed. The ribbon structure comprises ribbon sections running in at least two different directions. Ribbon sections are connected at nodes that may move substantially independently of other nodes. The ribbon structure can provide strength along one of the directions and may simultaneously remain slack in the other direction.

The invention claimed is: 1. An article of footwear, comprising: an upper having a first direction and a second direction, wherein the second direction is different than the first direction, the upper including a ribbon structure; the ribbon structure comprising a first group of two intersecting sets of ribbon sections, wherein the first group includes a first set of ribbon sections oriented substantially in the first direction and a second set of ribbon sections oriented substantially in a third direction that is different than the first direction; the ribbon structure comprising a second group of two intersecting sets of ribbon sections, wherein the second group includes a third set of ribbon sections oriented substantially in the second direction that is different from the first direction and the third direction and a fourth set of ribbon sections oriented substantially in a fourth direction that different than the first direction, the second direction, and the third direction; wherein at least one ribbon section in the first group of ribbon sections is stitched to at least one ribbon section in the second group of ribbon sections; wherein a ribbon section in the first group is placed in tension in response to a force applied along the first direction; and wherein a ribbon section in the second group is configured to remain substantially slack along the second direction while the force is applied along the first direction. 2. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein the first direction is a lateral direction of the upper. 3. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein the first direction is a longitudinal direction of the upper. 4. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein ribbon sections in the first group are attached at a first set of nodes; and wherein ribbon sections in the second group are attached a second set of nodes. 5. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein the ribbon section in the second group is placed in tension in response to a force applied along the second direction; and wherein the ribbon section in the first group is configured to remain substantially slack while the force is applied along the second direction. 6. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein the ribbon structure is comprised of a single continuous ribbon. 7. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein the first group of two intersecting sets of ribbon sections are perpendicular to each other; and wherein the second group of two intersecting sets of ribbon sections are perpendicular to each other. 8. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein ribbon sections have width between approximately 2 millimeters and approximately 6 millimeters. 9. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein the first direction and the second direction are substantially perpendicular. 10. An article of footwear, comprising: an upper including a ribbon structure; the ribbon structure comprising a pattern of ribbon portions and nodes; wherein the pattern of ribbon portions and nodes is formed by: a first set of ribbon sections oriented substantially in a first direction; a second set of ribbon sections oriented substantially in a second direction that is different from the first direction; a third set of ribbon sections oriented substantially in a third direction, wherein the third direction is different than the first direction and the second direction; and a fourth set of ribbon sections oriented substantially in a fourth direction, wherein the fourth direction is different than the first direction, the second direction, and the third direction; the ribbon structure including a first node and a second node, the first node and the second node being connected by a ribbon portion; wherein a ribbon section of the first set of ribbon sections is attached to a ribbon section of the second set of ribbon sections by a stitch at the first node; wherein a ribbon section of the third set of ribbon sections is attached to a ribbon section of the fourth set of ribbon sections by a stitch at the second node; and wherein the first node is configured to move substantially relative to the second node in response to a force applied to the ribbon structure. 11. The article of footwear according to claim 10 , wherein the ribbon portion is configured to bend in response to the first node and the second node being moved closer together. 12. The article of footwear according to claim 10 , wherein the ribbon portion is configured to become taut in response to applied tension between the first node and the second node. 13. The article of footwear according to claim 10 , wherein the first set of ribbon sections is placed in tension in response to a force applied along the first direction; and wherein the second set of ribbon sections is configured to remain substantially slack along the second direction in response to the force applied along the first direction. 14. The article of footwear according to claim 10 , wherein the first direction is a lateral direction and the second direction is a longitudinal direction. 15. An article of footwear, comprising: an upper including a ribbon structure; the ribbon structure comprising a pattern of ribbon portions and nodes, wherein ribbon portions form links connecting adjacent nodes; the pattern of ribbon portions and nodes formed by a repeating rectangular grid that includes links extending in four different directions; wherein the repeating rectangular grid includes a first node, a second node, a third node, a fourth node, and a fifth node, wherein the fifth node is disposed centrally within the repeating rectangular grid; wherein the first node and the second node are connected by a first link; wherein the second node and the third node are connected by a second link; wherein the third node and the fourth node are connected by a third link; wherein the fourth node and the first node are connected by a fourth link; wherein the fifth node is connected to the first node by a fifth link, wherein the fifth node is connected to the second node by a sixth link; wherein the fifth node is connected to the third node by a seventh link; and wherein the fifth node is connected to the fourth node by an eighth link. 16. The article of footwear according to claim 15 , wherein one or more ribbon portions of the ribbon structure are attached at nodes. 17. The article of footwear according to 15 , wherein one or more of the links connecting adjacent nodes are flexible. 18. The article of footwear according to claim 15 , wherein the ribbon portions of the ribbon structure are configured to undergo elastic deformation of up to 10% of their pre-stretched length and return to their pre-stretched length without permanent structural changes. 19. The article of footwear according to claim 15 , wherein the first link, the fifth link, and the sixth link form a triangle. 20. The article of footwear according to claim 15 , wherein the first link extends in a first direction; wherein the second link extends in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction; wherein the third link extends in a third direction perpendicular to the second direction; wherein the fourth link extends in a fourth direction perpendicular to the third direction; and wherein the fifth link, the sixth link, the seventh link, and the eighth link extend in directions different than each of the first direction, the second directio
