A hearing system includes a hearing aid (10) and personal communication device (20) connected via a short range data communication link. The hearing aid has a signal processor (13) processing an audio signal according to audio processing parameters, a sub-system applying respective sets of processing parameters for at least two modes, a classifier component (51) statistically analyzing the environment by comparing specific characteristics of an electrical input signal to one or more thresholds. A program selector component (16) selects automatically an appropriate mode for the signal processing sub-system according to the classifier output. The personal communication device offers the user an interface for controlling and interacting with the program selector component of the hearing aid, and for generating and transmitting a notification to the hearing aid. Upon reception of the notification, the processor adjusts at least one of the one or more thresholds used by the classifier component.

The invention claimed is: 1. A hearing system including a hearing aid having a signal processor for processing and amplifying sound to alleviate a hearing loss for a hearing-impaired individual, the signal processor having a signal processing sub-system with at least two modes of operation; and a program selector component for automatically selecting one of the at least two modes of operation in accordance with selection criteria which comprises a statistical analysis performed on at least one characteristic of an EEG signal; and a manually operable user input by which the user can indicate dissatisfaction with an automatically selected mode of operation; wherein the signal processor is configured to modify said selection criteria in response to an indicated dissatisfaction. 2. The hearing system according to claim 1 , wherein said indicated dissatisfaction comprises manual selection of a mode of operation that is different from said automatically selected mode of operation. 3. The hearing system according to claim 2 , wherein said statistical analysis includes comparison of said at least one characteristic to at least one threshold, and modifying said selection criteria comprises modifying said threshold. 4. The hearing system according to claim 1 , wherein said selection criteria comprises a classification of an environment in which the hearing aid is currently located. 5. The hearing system according to claim 4 , wherein said classification includes comparison of at least one detected environmental characteristic to at least one threshold, and said modifying comprises modifying said threshold. 6. The hearing system according to claim 2 , wherein said signal processor modifies said criteria only when said manual selection of a mode of operation different from the mode of operation automatically selected by said program selector component occurs within a predetermined time after an automatic selection of a mode of operation. 7. The hearing system according to claim 1 , wherein said hearing system further comprises a personal communication device wirelessly connected to said hearing aid, and said user input comprises a user interface of an application running on said personal communication device. 8. The hearing system according to claim 7 , wherein the indication of dissatisfaction comprises the user selecting amongst plural modes of operation presented by said user interface. 9. A hearing system including a hearing aid having a signal processor for processing and amplifying sound to alleviate a hearing loss for a hearing-impaired individual, the signal processor having a signal processing sub-system with at least two modes of operation; and a program selector component for automatically selecting one of the at least two modes of operation in accordance with selection criteria; and a manually operable user input by which the user can indicate dissatisfaction with an automatically selected mode of operation; wherein the signal processor is configured to modify said selection criteria in response to an indicated dissatisfaction, and wherein said hearing system includes a remote server to which data relating to modified selection criteria is uploaded, said remote server configured to modify, based on multiple uploads of data relating to similar modified selection criteria, at least one of: (i) a default selection criteria, (ii) an operating characteristic of an automatically selectable mode of operation, or (iii) a possible solution to be provided to a hearing aid user who has expressed dissatisfaction with modified selection criteria in a particular environment. 10. A method of operating a hearing system comprising a hearing aid having a signal processor for processing and amplifying sound to alleviate a hearing loss for a hearing-impaired individual, the signal processor having a signal processing sub-system with at least two modes of operation; and a program selector component for selecting one of the at least two modes of operation in accordance with selection criteria which comprises a statistical analysis performed on at least one characteristic of an EEG signal; and a manually operable user input by which the user can indicate dissatisfaction with an automatically selected mode of operation, said method comprising: permitting said user to manually indicate dissatisfaction with the automatically selected mode of operation; and modifying said selection criteria in response to an indicated dissatisfaction with the automatically selected mode of operation. 11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein said indicated dissatisfaction comprises manual selection of a mode of operation that is different from said automatically selected mode of operation. 12. The method according to claim 10 , wherein said statistical analysis includes comparison of said at least one characteristic to at least one threshold, and modifying said selection criteria comprises modifying said threshold. 13. The method according to claim 10 , wherein said selection criteria comprises a classification of an environment in which the hearing aid is currently located. 14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein said classification includes comparison of at least one detected environmental characteristic to at least one threshold, and said modifying comprises modifying said threshold. 15. The method according to claim 11 , wherein said signal processor modifies said criteria only when said manual selection of a mode of operation different from the mode of operation automatically selected by said program selector component occurs within a predetermined time after an automatic selection of a mode of operation. 16. The method according to claim 10 , wherein said hearing system further comprises a personal communication device wirelessly connected to said hearing aid, and said user input comprises a user interface of an application running on said personal communication device. 17. The method according to claim 16 , wherein said permitting step comprises presenting said user with an opportunity to select via said user interface amongst plural modes of operation. 18.
