Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A multi-lumen catheter includes a primary lumen having a proximal end and a tip and a secondary lumen parallel to the primary lumen. The primary lumen and the secondary lumen share a wall. A port is defined in the wall proximate the tip of the primary lumen and provides fluidic communication between the primary lumen and the secondary lumen.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A multi-lumen catheter comprising: a primary lumen having a proximal end and a tip; a secondary lumen parallel to the primary lumen, the primary lumen and the secondary lumen sharing a wall, the secondary lumen defined by the wall and a second wall disposed concentrically about the wall, the wall having a distal end terminating prior to a distal end of the second wall, the wall comprising a fluid permeable membrane; and one or more ribs fixedly coupling the wall to the second wall and configured and arranged to maintain separation between the wall and the second wall. 2. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the one or more ribs have a height of between about 20 micrometers and about 2 millimeters. 3. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the wall terminates prior to a distal tip of the catheter. 4. The catheter of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of ports defined in the wall along a length of the catheter and providing fluidic communication between the primary lumen and the secondary lumen. 5. The catheter of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of ports distributed about an outer face of the catheter. 6. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the second wall comprises a fluid permeable membrane. 7. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the distal end of the second wall is greater than a thickness of a portion of the second wall surrounding the wall. 8. The catheter of claim 2 , wherein the one or more ribs are distributed evenly about a circumference of the catheter. 9. The catheter of claim 8 , wherein the one or more ribs run substantially an entire length of the catheter. 10. The catheter of claim 8 , wherein the one or more ribs run along only a portion of a length of the catheter. 11. The catheter of claim 8 , wherein the one or more ribs are distributed about the circumference of the catheter at a plurality of locations along a length of the catheter. 12. The catheter of claim 5 , configured and arranged such that fluid exits the secondary lumen substantially only through the plurality of ports distributed about the outer face of the catheter. 13. The catheter of claim 5 , configured and arranged such that fluid exits the secondary lumen through the plurality of ports distributed about the outer face of the catheter and through a distal tip of the catheter. 14. A multi-lumen catheter comprising: a primary lumen having a proximal end and a tip; a secondary lumen parallel to the primary lumen, the primary lumen and the secondary lumen sharing a wall, the secondary lumen defined by the wall and a second wall disposed concentrically about the wall, the wall having a distal end terminating prior to a distal end of the second wall, the second wall comprising a fluid permeable membrane; and one or more ribs fixedly coupling the wall to the second wall and configured and arranged to maintain separation between the wall and the second wall. 15. The catheter of claim 14 , wherein the one or more ribs have a height of between about 20 micrometers and about 2 millimeters. 16. The catheter of claim 14 , wherein the wall terminates prior to a distal tip of the catheter. 17. The catheter of claim 15 , wherein the one or more ribs are distributed evenly about a circumference of the catheter. 18. The catheter of claim 17 , wherein the one or more ribs run substantially an entire length of the catheter. 19. The catheter of claim 17 , wherein the one or more ribs run along only a portion of a length of the catheter. 20. The catheter of claim 17 , wherein the one or more ribs are distributed about the circumference of the catheter at a plurality of locations along a length of the catheter.
