An alkaline dry battery includes a positive electrode, a negative electrode, a separator disposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode, and an alkaline electrolytic solution contained in the positive electrode, the negative electrode and the separator. The negative electrode includes a negative electrode active material including zinc, and an additive. The additive includes at least one selected from the group consisting of maleic acid, maleic anhydride and maleate salts.

The invention claimed is: 1. An alkaline dry battery comprising a positive electrode, a negative electrode, a separator disposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode, and an alkaline electrolytic solution contained in the positive electrode, the negative electrode and the separator, wherein the negative electrode comprises a negative electrode active material comprising zinc, and an additive, the additive comprises maleic anhydride, and wherein the amount of the additive contained in the negative electrode is not less than 0.2 parts by mass and not more than 4 parts by mass per 100 parts by mass of the electrolytic solution contained in the negative electrode. 2. The alkaline dry battery according to claim 1 , wherein the positive electrode comprises the additive.
