Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A cup feed assembly for a can bodymaker with a vertically oriented, reciprocating, elongated ram assembly is provided. The cup feed assembly includes a chute assembly, a rotatable feeder disk assembly, and a cup locator. The chute assembly includes a transfer chute. The transfer chute includes an outer second side member, a first end and a second end. The transfer chute first end is in communication with the feeder chute outlet end. The outer second side member at the transfer chute second end includes a first biasing device. The cup locator defines a holding space, the holding space in communication with the transfer chute second end. The feeder disk assembly is structured to move a cup disposed at feeder chute outlet end through the transfer chute into the cup locator. The first biasing device is structured to maintain a cup in the holding space.

What is claimed is: 1. A cup feed assembly comprising: a generally horizontal transfer chute; a cup loader defining a substantially vertical arcuate surface and a holding space; a rotatable feeder disk body including a second biasing device; said feeder disk body disposed in a generally horizontal plane and partially disposed in said transfer chute; wherein said feeder disk body is structured to move a cup through said transfer chute; and wherein said second biasing device is structured to maintain said cup in said holding space; said second biasing device includes an arcuate guide rail and a number of biasing devices; said feeder disk body includes a cutout having a reduced radius; said arcuate guide rail disposed in said disk body cutout; said number of biasing devices disposed between said arcuate guide rail and said feeder disk body; and wherein said arcuate guide rail is biased generally radially outwardly. 2. The cup feed assembly of claim 1 wherein, when said cup is disposed in said cup locator, said second biasing device biases said cup toward said cup locator. 3. The cup feed assembly of claim 1 wherein: said number of biasing devices are springs; each said spring having a longitudinal axis; and wherein said longitudinal axes of said springs are generally parallel. 4. The cup feed assembly of claim 1 wherein, when said cup is disposed in said cup locator, said second biasing device biases said cup toward said cup locator. 5. The cup feed assembly of claim 1 wherein said arcuate guide rail is movably coupled to said disk body. 6. The cup feed assembly of claim 1 wherein: said rotatable feeder disk assembly including a body with a circumferential surface, said circumferential surface including a first portion, a second portion, and a third portion, said circumferential surface first portion having a generally constant radius, said circumferential surface second portion having a reducing radius, said circumferential surface third portion being a pocket; and wherein said arcuate guide rail has an outer radius that is substantially similar to the radius of said circumferential surface first portion. 7. The cup feed assembly of claim 1 wherein: said second biasing device includes an arcuate guide rail; said feeder disk body includes a cutout having a reduced radius; said arcuate guide rail disposed in said disk body cutout; and wherein said arcuate guide rail is a resilient body. 8. The cup feed assembly of claim 1 wherein: said second biasing device includes an arcuate guide rail; and wherein said arcuate guide rail is a resilient body. 9. The cup feed assembly of claim 1 wherein: said transfer chute includes a first end, a medial portion, a second end and a generally planar horizontal member; said transfer chute first end, medial portion, and second end each being defined by an inner guide rail and an outer guide rail; and wherein said cup locator is disposed at said transfer chute second end. 10. A bodymaker comprising: a cup feed assembly; a ram assembly disposed generally below said cup feed assembly; said cup feed assembly including a chute assembly, a rotatable feeder disk assembly, and a cup locator; said chute assembly including a generally horizontal transfer chute, said transfer chute including a first end and a second end, said transfer chute first end in communication with said feeder chute outlet end; said rotatable feeder disk assembly including a body with circumferential surface, said circumferential surface including a first portion, a second portion, and a third portion, said circumferential surface first portion having a generally constant radius, said circumferential surface second portion having a reducing radius, said circumferential surface third portion being a pocket; said rotatable feeder disk body including a second biasing device; said feeder disk body disposed in a generally horizontal plane and partially disposed in said transfer chute; said cup locator defining a holding space, said holding space in communication with said transfer chute second end; wherein said feeder disk assembly is structured to propel a cup disposed at said feeder chute outlet end through said transfer chute into said cup locator; and wherein said second biasing device is structured to maintain said cup in said holding space; said second biasing device includes an arcuate guide rail and a number of biasing devices; said feeder disk body includes a cutout having a reduced radius; said arcuate guide rail disposed in said disk body cutout; said number of biasing devices disposed between said arcuate guide rail and said feeder disk body; and wherein said arcuate guide rail is biased generally radially outwardly. 11. The bodymaker of claim 10 wherein, when said cup is disposed in said cup locator, said second biasing device biases said cup toward said cup locator. 12. The bodymaker of claim 10 wherein: Said number of biasing devices are springs; each said spring having a longitudinal axis; and wherein said longitudinal axes of said springs are generally parallel. 13. The bodymaker of claim 10 wherein, when said cup is disposed in said cup locator, said second biasing device biases said cup toward said cup locator. 14. The cup feed assembly of claim 10 wherein said arcuate guide rail is movably coupled to said disk body. 15. The bodymaker of claim 10 wherein: said rotatable feeder disk assembly including a body with circumferential surface, said circumferential surface including a first portion, a second portion, and a third portion, said circumferential surface first portion having a generally constant radius, said circumferential surface second portion having a reducing radius, said circumferential surface third portion being a pocket; and wherein said arcuate guide rail has an outer radius that is substantially similar to the radius of said circumferential surface first portion. 16. The bodymaker of claim 10 wherein: said second biasing device includes an arcuate guide rail; said feeder disk body includes a cutout having a reduced radius; said arcuate guide rail disposed in said disk body cutout; and wherein said arcuate guide rail is a resilient body. 17. The bodymaker of claim 10 wherein: said second biasing device includes an arcuate guide rail; and wherein said arcuate guide rail is a resilient body. 18.
