Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A miter saw includes a base assembly and a saw unit pivotably coupled to the base assembly. The saw unit includes a saw blade and an upper blade guard covering an upper portion of the saw blade. The miter saw also includes a cut line indicator coupled to the upper blade guard. The cut line indicator includes a light source, a cover positioned between the saw blade and the light source, a housing in which the light source is positioned, a rib coupled to one of the cover or the housing, and a first slot defined in the other of the cover or the housing. The cover includes a second slot through which light from the light source passes to illuminate opposite sides of the saw blade and a work piece supported upon the base assembly, thereby casting a shadow of the saw blade onto the work piece. The rib is receivable within the first slot to align the second slot with the saw blade.

What is claimed is: 1. A miter saw comprising: a base assembly; a saw unit pivotably coupled to the base assembly, the saw unit including a saw blade and an upper blade guard covering an upper portion of the saw blade; and a cut line indicator coupled to the upper blade guard, the cut line indicator including a light source, a cover positioned between the saw blade and the light source, the cover including a rib, and a housing in which the light source is positioned, the housing including a first slot; wherein the cover includes a second slot through which light from the light source passes to illuminate opposite sides of the saw blade and a work piece supported upon the base assembly, thereby casting a shadow of the saw blade onto the work piece, and wherein the rib is engageable with the first slot to align the second slot with the saw blade, and wherein the saw unit includes a lower blade guard movable relative to the upper blade guard between a lowered position in which the lower blade guard covers a lower portion of the saw blade and a raised position in which the lower blade guard exposes the lower portion of the saw blade, and wherein the lower blade guard covers the cut line indicator when in the lowered position and exposes the cut line indicator when in the raised position. 2. The miter saw of claim 1 , wherein the cover is opaque. 3. The miter saw of claim 1 , wherein the housing includes an aperture in which the cover is received. 4. The miter saw of claim 1 , wherein the second slot is rectangular and defines a central axis that is aligned with the saw blade. 5. The miter saw of claim 1 , wherein the second slot is positioned between about 5 millimeters and about 15 millimeters from the saw blade. 6. The miter saw of claim 1 , wherein the second slot includes a width between about 2 millimeters and about 10 millimeters. 7. The miter saw of claim 1 , wherein the second slot includes a width that is about 1 millimeter greater than a width of the saw blade. 8. The miter saw of claim 1 , wherein the second slot includes a width that is about 3 millimeters greater than a width of the saw blade. 9. The miter saw of claim 1 , wherein the second slot includes a length between about 25 millimeters and about 35 millimeters. 10. The miter saw of claim 1 , further comprising a trigger that is actuated to rotate the saw blade, wherein the light source is illuminated in response to actuation of the trigger. 11. The miter saw of claim 1 , wherein the light source is positioned adjacent a front end of the upper blade guard. 12. The miter saw of claim 11 , wherein the second slot of the cover is the only slot of the cut line indicator through which light from the light source passes to illuminate the opposite sides of the saw blade. 13. The miter saw of claim 1 , wherein the second slot is fixed relative to the housing in response to the rib engaging the first slot. 14. The miter saw of claim 1 , wherein the housing includes an edge defining an aperture, and wherein a perimeter of the cover mates with the edge of the housing to position the cover within the aperture of the housing when the rib engages the first slot. 15. The miter saw of claim 1 , wherein the cover is positioned over an opening of the upper blade guard such that the light from the light source passes through the second slot and the opening to illuminate the opposite sides of the saw blade. 16. A cut line indicator configured to be coupled to a power tool, the power tool including a saw blade operable to cut a work piece, the cut line indicator comprising: a light source; a housing in which the light source is positioned, the housing including a first slot; and a disk-shaped cover coupled to the housing to cover the light source, the cover including a rib and a second slot, the rib of the cover engageable with the first slot of the housing such that the second slot is configured to align with the saw blade; wherein the housing includes an aperture in which an outer periphery of the cover is received, and wherein light from the light source passes through the second slot of the cover such that the light is configured to illuminate opposite sides of the saw blade, thereby casting a shadow of the saw blade onto the work piece. 17. The cut line indicator of claim 16 , wherein the cover is opaque. 18. The cut line indicator of claim 16 , wherein the second slot is rectangular and defines a central axis that is configured to align with the saw blade. 19. The cut line indicator of claim 16 , wherein the second slot of the cover is the only slot of the cut line indicator in which light from the light source passes through.
