Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

In some implementations, a system can be configured to allow remote control devices to quietly obtain status information related to various audio/video playback devices. For example, a streaming device (e.g., a user device, phone, etc.) can establish a streaming connection to a playback device. The playback device can be configured to only accept a single streaming connection (i.e., master connection). A remote control device (e.g., a user device, phone, etc.) can quietly connect (i.e., control connection) to the playback device without interrupting the master connection to obtain status information related to the playback device and or the media being streamed to the playback device. The remote control device can provide commands through the control connection to adjust the playback of the streamed media at the playback device.

We claim: 1. A method comprising: establishing a wireless master connection between a playback device and a streaming device, wherein the master connection is configured to wirelessly communicate media data to the playback device to enable presentation of a media item at the playback device; receiving, by the playback device, the media item from the streaming device through the master connection; presenting, by the playback device, the media item; establishing a control connection between the playback device and a remote control device, wherein the control connection is configured to communicate media commands related to the media item to the playback device, wherein the control connection is established in a pairing process without interrupting presentation of the media item on the playback device, wherein, in the pairing process, the playback device sends an indication to the remote control device specifying whether or not the playback device is a playback group leader of a playback group, the playback group leader determining how to route media data received through the master connection based on capabilities of respective playback devices in the playback group; receiving, by the playback device, a media command from the remote control device through the control connection; and processing, by the playback device, the media command for the playback devices in the playback group. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, responsive to establishing the control connection between the playback device and the remote control device, automatically pairing one or more authorized user devices with the playback device, the one or more authorized user devices being associated with the remote control device. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the control connection is established without disrupting the master connection between the playback device and the streaming device, and wherein the media command comprises instructions to change playback of the media item on the playback device. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein processing the media command includes executing the media command at the playback device to change playback of the media item. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein processing the media command includes forwarding the media command to the streaming device responsive to determining that the streaming device is the playback group leader, wherein the streaming device executes the media command. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the media command comprises a request for a playback state of the playback device, the method further comprising: in response to receiving the media command, sending, by the playback device, playback state information corresponding to the media item to the remote control device through the control connection. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the playback device is configured to manage a single master connection and a plurality of control connections corresponding to a plurality of remote control devices. 8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: determining, by the playback device, that the streaming device is the playback group leader; based on the determination that the streaming device is the playback group leader, sending the media command to the streaming device; receiving, by the playback device, a response to the media command from the streaming device; and processing, by the playback device, the response. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein processing the response includes at least one action selected from a group comprising: sending the response to the remote control device through the control connection, and executing the media command at the playback device. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein, in the pairing process, the playback device sends a second indication to the remote control device specifying whether or not the playback device is a playback group leader of a playback group. 11. A system comprising: one or more processors; and a non-transitory computer readable medium including one or more sequences of instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the processors to perform operations comprising: establishing a wireless master connection between a playback device and a streaming device, wherein the master connection is configured to wirelessly communicate media data to the playback device to enable presentation of a media item at the playback device; receiving, by the playback device, the media item from the streaming device through the master connection; presenting, by the playback device, the media item; establishing a control connection between the playback device and a remote control device, wherein the control connection is configured to communicate media commands related to the media item to the playback device, and wherein the control connection is established in a pairing process without interrupting presentation of the media item on the playback device, wherein, in the pairing process, the playback device sends, to the remote control device, an indication that the playback device supports relaying messages for a non-discoverable group leader; receiving, by the playback device, a media command from the remote control device through the control connection; and processing, by the playback device, the media command. 12. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the instructions cause the processors to perform operations comprising, responsive to establishing the control connection between the playback device and the remote control device, automatically pairing one or more authorized user devices with the playback device, the one or more authorized user devices being associated with the remote control device. 13. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the control connection is established without disrupting the master connection between the playback device and the streaming device, and wherein the media command comprises instructions to change playback of the media item on the playback device. 14. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the instructions that cause processing the media command include instructions that cause executing the media command at the playback device to change playback of the media item. 15. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the instructions that cause processing the media command include instructions that cause forwarding the media command to the streaming device responsive to determining that the streaming device is the playback group leader, wherein the streaming device executes the media command. 16. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the media command comprises a request for a playback state of the playback device, and wherein the instructions cause the processors to perform operations comprising: in response to receiving the media command, sending, by the playback device, playback state information corresponding to the media item to the remote control device through the control connection. 17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the playback device is configured to manage a single master connection and a plurality of control connections corresponding to a plurality of remote control devices. 18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the instructions cause the processors to perform operations comprising: determining, by the playback device, that the streaming device is the playback group leader; based on the determination that the str
