Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method of making an adhesive article is described comprising melt extruding a core film layer comprising a composition comprising at least 50% of a polylactic acid polymer. The method further comprises melt extruding an adhesive layer on a major surface of the core film layer such that regions of interdiffusion are present between the core film layer and adhesive layer. The adhesive layer may comprise C1-C10 (meth)acrylic acid or ester thereof, vinyl acetate, ethylene vinyl acetate, hydrolysed polyvinyl alcohol and combinations thereof. The adhesive layer may also be a pressure sensitive adhesive. The method further comprises melt extruding a release film layer on an opposing major surface of the core film layer. The layers are sequentially extruded or co-extruded and can be uniaxially or biaxially oriented. Articles comprising a core film layer comprising a composition comprising at least 50% of a polylactic acid polymer and an adhesive layer disposed on a major surface of the core layer are also described.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of making an adhesive article comprising melt extruding a core film layer comprising a composition comprising at least 50% of a polylactic acid polymer, melt extruding an adhesive layer on a major surface of the core film layer; wherein the adhesive layer is a pressure sensitive adhesive that comprises moieties that are miscible in the composition of the core layer such that regions of interdiffusion are present between the core film layer and adhesive layer, and melt extruding a release film layer on an opposing major surface of the core film layer; wherein the release film layer comprises at least 50% of a polylactic acid polymer and a release agent that comprises a copolymer comprising a first moiety comprising a C12-C30 alkyl group and a second moiety that is miscible in the release film layer. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the layers are sequentially melt extruded or coextruded. 3. The method of claim 1 further comprising uniaxially or biaxially orienting the film layers. 4. The method of claim 3 further comprising heat setting the oriented film layers. 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the moieties of the adhesive layer comprise polymerized units of a C1-C10 (meth)acrylic acid or ester thereof, vinyl acetate, ethylene vinyl acetate, hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol, and combinations thereof. 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the adhesive layer comprises an acrylic copolymer. 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the adhesive layer comprises polymerized units of at least one low Tg alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer, wherein when reacted to form a homopolymer has a T g no greater than 0° C. 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the second moiety comprises polymerized units of C1-C10 (meth)acrylic acid, vinyl acetate, ethylene vinyl acetate, hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol, and combinations thereof. 9. The method of claim 1 wherein the copolymer is a random copolymer of a C1-C10 (meth)acrylic acid and a C12-C30 alkyl acrylate or a copolymer of ethylene vinyl acetate and polyvinyl alcohol comprising pendent C12-C30 alkyl groups. 10. The method of claim 1 wherein the release layer comprises up to 25 wt.-% of the copolymer. 11. The method of claim 1 wherein the release layer comprises up to 15 wt.-% of C12-C30 alkyl moieties. 12. The method of claim 1 wherein at least the release layer is oriented and the release layer has a 180 Degree Peel Adhesion less than the same unoriented film. 13. The method of claim 1 wherein the release layer has a 180 Degree Peel Adhesion less than the core film layer. 14. The method of claim 1 wherein the release layer has a relative peel factor of less than 1. 15. A method of making an adhesive article comprising melt extruding a core film layer comprising a composition comprising at least 50% of a polylactic acid polymer, melt extruding an adhesive layer on a major surface of the core film layer; wherein the adhesive layer is a pressure sensitive adhesive that comprises moieties that are miscible in the composition of the core layer such that regions of interdiffusion are present between the core film layer and adhesive layer, and melt extruding a release film layer on an opposing major surface of the core film layer; wherein the release film layer comprises at least 50% of a polylactic acid polymer and a release agent, and wherein the release film layer has one or more of the following properties: i) is oriented and has a 180 Degree Peel Adhesion less than the same unoriented film; ii) has a 180 Degree Peel Adhesion less than the core film layer; and iii) has a relative peel factor of less than 1. 16. An article comprising a core film layer comprising a composition comprising at least 50% of a polylactic acid polymer, an adhesive layer disposed on a major surface of the core film layer, wherein the adhesive layer is a pressure sensitive adhesive that comprises moieties that are miscible in the composition of the core film layer such that regions of interdiffusion are present between the core film layer and adhesive layer, and a release layer disposed on an opposing major surface of the core film layer; wherein the release film layer comprises at least 50% of a polylactic acid polymer and a release agent that comprises a copolymer comprising a first moiety comprising a C12-C30 alkyl group and a second moiety that is miscible in the release film layer. 17. The article of claim 16 wherein the moieties of the adhesive layer that are miscible in the composition of the core layer are miscible when the moieties of the adhesive and the composition of the core layer are molten. 18. The article of claim 16 wherein the film or film layer is oriented. 19. The article of claim 16 wherein the article is tape.
