Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A surgical apparatus configured to be placed in the musculoskeletal system to precisely separate a first bone from a second bone. The surgical apparatus has one or more sensors to measure one or more parameters and supports one or more bone cuts for installing a prosthetic component. The surgical apparatus has three distraction mechanisms configured to increase or decrease a height between a first support structure and a second support structure. A tilt mechanism comprises at least one of the three distraction mechanisms. Each distraction mechanism is supported by at least two guide shafts such that movement of each distraction mechanism is aligned by the corresponding at least two guide shafts and loading is supported by the corresponding at least two guide shafts.

What is claimed is: 1. A surgical apparatus configured to support at least one bone cut for installing a prosthetic component wherein the surgical apparatus is configured to distract a musculoskeletal system, wherein at least one distraction mechanism is supported by at least two guide shafts whereby movement of the at least one distraction mechanism is aligned by the at least two guide shafts, and wherein loading applied to the at least one distraction mechanism is supported by the at least two guide shafts, wherein the surgical apparatus includes a first surface configured to contact a first bone of a joint and a second surface configured to contact a second bone of the joint, wherein the first surface is supported by the at least two guide shafts and the second surface is supported by the at least two guide shafts, the surgical apparatus including a cage system, wherein the cage system is configured to support a plurality of distraction mechanisms, wherein the cage system comprises an anterior medial guide shaft; a posterior medial guide shaft; an anterior lateral guide shaft, and a posterior lateral guide shaft, wherein the anterior medial guide shaft; the posterior medial guide shaft; the anterior lateral guide shaft, and the posterior lateral guide shaft couples between a cap and a base, wherein the anterior medial guide shaft; the posterior medial guide shaft; the anterior lateral guide shaft, and the posterior lateral guide shaft are parallel to one another the surgical apparatus including a first distraction mechanism comprising: a support holder having a first opening, a second opening, and a threaded opening wherein the anterior medial guide shaft couples through the first opening of the support holder and wherein the anterior lateral guide shaft couples through the second opening of the support holder; a first support structure coupled to the support holder; and a first threaded shaft configured to raise or lower the support holder wherein the first threaded shaft couples through an opening in the base, and wherein the first threaded shaft engages with the threaded opening of the support holder and is configured to move the support holder and thereby the first support structure a predetermined distance to distract the musculoskeletal system when rotated. 2. The surgical apparatus of claim 1 further including a second distraction mechanism comprising: a medial support structure having a first opening, a second opening, and a threaded opening wherein the anterior medial guide shaft couples through the first opening of the medial support structure and wherein the anterior medial guide shaft couples through the second opening of the medial support structure; a second support structure coupled to the medial support structure; and a second threaded shaft configured to raise or lower the medial support structure wherein the second threaded shaft couples through an opening in the cap, and wherein the second threaded shaft engages with the threaded opening of the medial support structure and is configured to move the medial support structure and thereby the second support structure a predetermined distance on a first side to distract the musculoskeletal system when rotated. 3. The surgical apparatus of claim 2 further including a third distraction mechanism comprising: a lateral support structure having a first opening, a second opening, and a threaded opening wherein the anterior lateral guide shaft couples through the first opening of the lateral support structure and wherein the anterior medial guide shaft couples through the second opening of the lateral support structure; the second support structure coupled to the lateral support structure; and a third threaded shaft configured to raise or lower the lateral support structure wherein the third threaded shaft couples through an opening in the cap, and wherein the third threaded shaft engages with the threaded opening of the lateral support structure and is configured to move the lateral support structure and thereby the second support structure a predetermined distance on a second side to distract the musculoskeletal system when rotated. 4. The surgical apparatus of claim 3 wherein second support structure couples to the medial support structure through a first pivot point, wherein the second support couples to the lateral support structure through a second pivot point, and wherein a tilt of the second support structure is measured by at least one sensor. 5. The surgical apparatus of claim 3 wherein loading to the surgical apparatus is distributed between the first and second pivot points to the cage system. 6. The surgical apparatus of claim 3 further including: at least one load sensor overlying the first side of the second support structure; at least one load sensor overlying the second side of the second support structure; and a computer configured to receive quantitative measurement data from the surgical apparatus wherein the computer includes a display configured to display loading on the first side of the second support structure, to display loading on the second side of the second side of the second support structure, to display a tilt of the second support structure. 7. The surgical apparatus of claim 6 wherein the surgical apparatus is configured to change the tilt from a first tilt to a second tilt under distraction, wherein the surgical apparatus and the computer is configured to translate the second tilt to the at least one bone cut to support the installation of the prosthetic component in alignment and balance within the musculoskeletal system. 8. A surgical apparatus configured to support at least one bone cut for installing a prosthetic component comprising: a cage system comprising: a cap, an anterior medial guide shaft; a posterior medial guide shaft; an anterior lateral guide shaft; a posterior lateral guide shaft; and a base wherein the anterior medial guide shaft, the posterior medial guide shaft, the anterior lateral guide shaft, and the posterior lateral guide shaft couple between the cap and the base; a support holder having a first opening, a second opening, and a threaded opening wherein the anterior medial guide shaft couples through the first opening of the support holder and wherein the anterior lateral guide shaft couples through the second opening of the support holder; a first support structure coupled to the support holder; and a first threaded shaft configured to raise or lower the support holder wherein the first threaded shaft couples through an opening in the base, and wherein the first threaded shaft engages with the threaded opening of the support holder and is configured to move the support holder and thereby the first support structure a predetermined distance to distract the musculoskeletal system when rotated. 9. The surgical apparatus of claim 8 further including: a medial support structure having a first opening, a second opening, and a threaded opening wherein the anterior medial guide shaft couples through the first opening of the medial support structure and wherein the anterior medial guide shaft couples through the second opening of the medial support structure; a second support structure coupled to the medial support structure; and a second threaded shaft configured to raise or lower the medial support structure wherein the second threaded shaft couples through an opening in the cap, and wherein the second threaded shaft engages with the threaded opening of the medial support structure and is configured to move the medial support structure and thereby the second support structure a predetermined distance on a first side to distract the musculoskeletal system when rotated. 1
