Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods for producing glass articles from laminated glass tubing include introducing the glass tubing to a converter. The glass tubing includes a core layer under tensile stress, an outer clad layer under, and an inner clad layer. The methods include forming a feature the glass article at a working end of the laminated glass tubing and separating a glass article from the working end of the laminated glass tubing, which may expose the core layer under tensile stress at the working end of the glass tubing. The method further comprises remediating the exposed portion of the core layer by completely enclosing the core layer in a clad layer. Systems for re-cladding the exposed portion of the core layer as well as glass articles made using the systems and methods are also disclosed.

What is claimed is: 1. A system for maintaining the integrity of laminated glass tubing during conversion of the laminated glass tubing into a plurality of glass articles, the system comprising: a holder operable to secure the laminated glass tubing, the glass tubing comprising at least a core layer, an inner clad layer, and an outer clad layer, wherein the core layer is under tension and at least one of the inner clad layer and the outer clad layer are under compression; a separator operable to separate a glass article from a working end of the laminated glass tubing, wherein separation of the glass article from the working end of the laminated glass tubing exposes a portion of the core layer at the working end of the laminated glass tubing; and a re-cladding station that includes a glass sheet holder comprising a cradle shaped to hold an annular glass sheet, wherein the re-cladding station is operable to contact the annular glass sheet disposed in the cradle of the glass sheet holder with a surface of the laminated glass tubing to remediate the exposed portion of the core layer and completely enclose the core layer from external sources of surface damage. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the re-cladding station comprises a preheater operable to heat the laminated glass tubing at a working end, an upper surface of the annular glass sheet, or both. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the preheater comprises a gas torch or a laser. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cradle comprises a central positioner that extends through a center opening in the annular glass sheet. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cradle has a bottom surface that is concave. 6. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a finish heater positioned proximate the working end of the laminated glass tube, the finish heater operable to melt the annular glass sheet to the outer clad layer and the inner clad layer of the laminated glass tubing. 7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an actuator operatively coupled to the holder or the glass sheet holder, wherein the actuator is operable to move the holder towards the glass sheet holder or move the glass sheet holder towards the holder, wherein operation of the actuator causes contact between the annular glass sheet and the working end of the laminated glass tubing secured in the holder. 8. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a glass sheet feeder configured to deliver the annular glass sheets to the cradle of the glass sheet holder. 9. A system for maintaining the integrity of laminated glass tubing during conversion of the laminated glass tubing into a plurality of glass articles, the system comprising: a holder operable to secure the laminated glass tubing, the glass tubing comprising at least a core layer, an inner clad layer, and an outer clad layer, wherein the core layer is under tension and at least one of the inner clad layer and the outer clad layer are under compression; a separator operable to separate a glass article from a working end of the laminated glass tubing, wherein separation of the glass article from the working end of the laminated glass tubing exposes a portion of the core layer at the working end of the laminated glass tubing; and a re-cladding station comprising a trimming station that includes an inner trimming tool and an outer trimming tool, wherein the trimming station is operable to insert the inner trimming tool into the working end of the laminated glass tubing and progressively bring the inner trimming tool and the outer trimming tool into close contact, which causes at least a portion of the inner clad layer, the outer clad layer, or both of the laminated glass tubing to remediate the exposed portion of the core layer and completely enclose the core layer from external sources of surface damage. 10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the re-cladding station comprises a preheater operable to heat the laminated glass tubing at a working end or a trimming region of the laminated glass tubing. 11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the preheater comprises a gas torch or a laser.
