Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A toolpack for a can bodymaker with a vertically oriented, reciprocating, elongated ram assembly is provided. The toolpack includes a tool pack housing assembly, a number of die spacers, a number of dies, and a compression device. The tool pack housing assembly defines a passage and includes an inner surface, an upper sidewall, a lower sidewall, a first lateral sidewall, a second lateral sidewall, a rear sidewall, and a door. The tool pack housing assembly passage extends generally vertically. Each die spacer structured to support a die and defining a central passage. Each die including a body defining a central passage. The die spacers and dies are disposed in said tool pack housing assembly. The compression device is disposed at said tool pack housing assembly lower sidewall and is structured to axially bias said number of die spacers.

What is claimed is: 1. A vertically oriented bodymaker tool pack comprising: a tool pack housing assembly defining a passage and including an inner surface, an upper sidewall, a lower sidewall, a first lateral sidewall, a second lateral sidewall, a rear sidewall, and a door; said tool pack housing assembly passage extending generally vertically; a number of die spacers; a number of dies, each die including a body defining a central passage and structured to be coincident with said passage of said tool pack housing assembly; said number of die spacers disposed in said tool pack housing assembly; and said number of dies disposed in said tool pack housing assembly. 2. The bodymaker tool pack of claim 1 wherein each die of said number of dies is disposed on one die spacer of said number of die spacers. 3. The bodymaker tool pack of claim 1 wherein: said tool pack housing assembly inner surface defines a number of pairs of horizontal slots; each pair of horizontal slots including opposed slots on said tool pack housing assembly first lateral sidewall and said tool pack housing assembly second lateral sidewall; each slot sized to loosely correspond to the height of an associated die spacer; and each die spacer of said number of die spacers disposed in an associated pair of horizontal slots. 4. The bodymaker tool pack of claim 3 wherein: each said die spacer has a height; and each said slot in said pair of horizontal slots has a height between about 0.040 inch and 0.050 inch greater than the die spacer associated with that specific pair of horizontal slots. 5. The bodymaker tool pack of claim 4 wherein each said slot in a specific pair of horizontal slots has a height about 0.045 inch greater than the die spacer associated with that specific pair of horizontal slots. 6. The bodymaker tool pack of claim 1 wherein said number of die spacers includes at least one of a supported die spacer or a floating die spacer. 7. The bodymaker tool pack of claim 6 wherein: said tool pack housing assembly inner surface defines a number of pairs of horizontal slots; each pair of horizontal slots including opposed slots on said tool pack housing assembly first lateral sidewall and said tool pack housing assembly second lateral sidewall; each slot sized to loosely correspond to the height of an associated die spacer; and each said die spacer of said number of die spacers disposed in an associated pair of horizontal slots. 8. The bodymaker tool pack of claim 1 wherein: said number of die spacers includes a number of floating die spacers; and each floating die spacer is disposed on one of a supported die spacer or a die. 9. The bodymaker tool pack of claim 1 wherein: said door includes a latch assembly; said latch assembly including a latch base and a latch handle; and said latch handle coupled to said first lateral sidewall, said latch handle including a cam member, said latch handle structured to move between an open, first position, wherein said latch handle does not engage said latch base, and a closed, second position, wherein said latch handle cam member engages said latch base. 10. The bodymaker tool pack of claim 1 wherein: said tool pack housing assembly upper sidewall includes a stripper bulkhead; and said tool pack housing assembly includes a cup feed bulkhead having a horizontally centering cavity for a redraw die. 11. The bodymaker tool pack of claim 1 wherein said tool pack housing assembly and die spacers include a coolant system. 12. The bodymaker tool pack of claim 11 wherein: said coolant system includes an inlet, a distribution passage, a number of die spacer manifolds, a number of spray outlets, a number of collection passages, a drain passage, and a trough; said inlet disposed on said tool pack housing assembly, said inlet coupled to, and in fluid communication with, a coolant source; said distribution passage disposed in said tool pack housing assembly, said distribution passage coupled to, and in fluid communication with, said inlet; each said die spacer including a die spacer manifold of said number of die spacer manifolds, each said die spacer manifold coupled to, and in fluid communication with, said distribution passage; each said die spacer of said number of die spacers including a number of spray outlets, each said die spacer spray outlet coupled to, and in fluid communication with, a die spacer manifold; each said die spacer spray outlets structured to spray a fluid into said tool pack housing assembly passage; each said collection passage structured to collect fluid in said tool pack housing assembly passage; each said collection passage coupled to, and in fluid communication with, said drain passage; and said drain passage, coupled to, and in fluid communication with, said trough. 13. The bodymaker tool pack of claim 12 wherein each said spray outlet is structured to spray a coolant at an upward angle into said tool pack housing assembly passage. 14. The bodymaker tool pack of claim 12 wherein: a number of die spacers of said number of die spacers include a collection reservoir; and said collection reservoir extending around a die spacer central passage. 15. The bodymaker tool pack of claim 1 wherein: each said die spacer includes a door side; and each said die spacer door side includes a removal tool coupling. 16. The bodymaker tool pack of claim 1 wherein: each said die spacer includes an upper surface; and said die spacer upper surface including a horizontally centering cavity. 17. The bodymaker tool pack of claim 1 wherein said number of dies includes a first set of dies having a first internal diameter and a second set of dies having a second internal diameter. 18. The bodymaker tool pack of claim 1 further comprising: a compression device disposed at said tool pack housing assembly lower sidewall, said compression device structured to bias said number of die spacers in an axial direction; and said compression device is structured to provide axial compression to said number of die spacers by applying an upward force. 19.
