Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A fiber-reinforced composite article useful in supporting or immobilizing an injured body part is disclosed. The composite is a multi-layer, flexible precursor including fiber reinforcement plies, which can be rapidly cured into a rigid body using a thermosetting resin. Methods of making and using the same are also disclosed, along with kits containing such composite articles.

The invention claimed is: 1. A fiber-reinforced composite article comprising: a multi-layer body convertible from a flexible state to a rigid state, said multi-layer body comprising: an encapsulated fiber compartment; and a light source configured to emit light energy, wherein said encapsulated fiber compartment comprises a fiber reinforcement layer, an encapsulating film, and a photo-curable resin, wherein said fiber reinforcement layer is impregnated with said photo-curable resin and encapsulated by said encapsulating film, the photo-curable resin being uncured when the multi-layer body is in the flexible state and being cured when the multi-layer body is in the rigid state, the photo-curable resin being configured to begin a curing process when light energy emitted by the light source is incident on the encapsulated fiber compartment. 2. The fiber-reinforced composite article of claim 1 , wherein the multi-layer body further comprises a sleeve enclosing the encapsulated fiber compartment and the light source. 3. The fiber-reinforced composite article of claim 2 , wherein the multi-layer body is configured to conform to an injured body part when in the flexible state and to immobilize the injured body part when in the rigid state. 4. The fiber-reinforced composite article of claim 3 , wherein the injured body part is a leg and the fiber-reinforced composite article is a long-leg splint. 5. The fiber-reinforced composite article of claim 4 , wherein the article further comprises at least one strap, the strap being connected to the sleeve and configured to affix the fiber-reinforced composite article to the leg. 6. The fiber-reinforced composite article of claim 3 , wherein the sleeve is an insulating barrier configured to reduce the amount of heat transferred from the multi-layer body to the injured body part when the multi-layer body converts from the flexible state to the rigid state. 7. The fiber-reinforced composite article of claim 2 , said multi-layer body further comprising a reflector, said light source being positioned between the encapsulated fiber compartment and the sleeve. 8. The fiber-reinforced composite article of claim 1 , further comprising a spacer configured to diffuse light energy emitted by the light source, the spacer positioned between said light source and said encapsulated fiber compartment such that light energy emitted by the light source passes through the spacer before being incident on the encapsulated fiber compartment. 9. The fiber-reinforced composite article of claim 8 , wherein the multi-layer body further comprises a sleeve enclosing the encapsulated fiber compartment, the spacer, and the light source. 10. The fiber-reinforced composite article of claim 1 , wherein the article further comprises a power source, the power source being electrically connected to the light source. 11. The fiber-reinforced composite article of claim 10 , wherein the power source is a battery. 12. A fiber-reinforced composite article, said article comprising: a multi-layer body convertible from a flexible state to a rigid state, the multi-layer body comprising: an encapsulated fiber compartment; a light source configured to emit light energy; and a sleeve enclosing said encapsulated fiber compartment and said light source, wherein the encapsulated fiber compartment comprises a fiber reinforcement layer, photo-curable resin, and an encapsulating film, said fiber reinforcement layer being impregnated with the photo-curable resin and encapsulated by the encapsulating film, said photo-curable resin being uncured when the multi-layer body is in the flexible state and being cured when the multi-layer body is in the rigid state, said photo-curable resin being configured to begin a curing process when light energy emitted by the light source is incident on the encapsulated fiber compartment, wherein said photo-curable resin is configured such that the curing process occurs in less than 10 minutes after being exposed to light energy emitted by said light source. 13. The fiber-reinforced composite article of claim 12 , wherein the curing process occurs in less than 3 minutes. 14. The fiber-reinforced composite article of claim 13 , wherein the multi-layer body further comprises a spacer configured to diffuse light energy emitted by the light source, said spacer positioned between the light source and the encapsulated fiber compartment such that light energy emitted by the light source passes through the spacer before being incident on the encapsulated fiber compartment. 15. The fiber-reinforced composite article of claim 13 , wherein the multi-layer body is configured to conform to an injured body part when in the flexible state and to immobilize the injured body part when in the rigid state. 16. The fiber-reinforced composite article of claim 13 , wherein the article further comprises a power source, the power source being electrically connected to the light source. 17. A fiber-reinforced composite article, the article comprising: a multi-layer body convertible from a flexible state to a rigid state, the multi-layer body comprising: an encapsulated fiber compartment; and a sleeve enclosing the encapsulated fiber compartment, wherein the encapsulated fiber compartment comprises a fiber reinforcement layer, thermosetting resin, and an encapsulating film, the fiber reinforcement layer being impregnated with said thermosetting resin and encapsulated by said encapsulating film, said thermosetting resin being uncured when the multi-layer body is in the flexible state and being cured when the multi-layer body is in the rigid state, wherein the thermosetting resin is configured to have a curing process that occurs in less than 3 minutes. 18. The fiber-reinforced composite article of claim 17 , wherein the multi-layer body is configured to conform to an injured body part when in the flexible state and to immobilize the injured body part when in the rigid state. 19. The fiber-reinforced composite article of claim 18 , wherein the injured body part is a leg and the fiber-reinforced composite article is a long-leg splint. 20. The fiber-reinforced composite article of claim 19 , wherein the article further comprises at least one strap, the strap being connected to the sleeve and configured to affix the fiber-reinforced composite article to the leg.
