A roll sheet with a continuous sheet wound in a roll form is rotated in a forward direction to supply the sheet to a printing unit. A sensor whose output is changed in accordance with a distance between the sensor and the sheet is used. A rotation direction of the roll sheet is switched from an opposite direction to the forward direction on the basis of the output of the sensor during rotation of the roll sheet in the opposite direction.

What is claimed is: 1. A sheet feeding apparatus, comprising: a driving unit configured to rotate a roll in a first direction for feeding a sheet from the roll, which is formed by winding the sheet, and in a second direction for winding the sheet, the second direction being opposite to the first direction; a detecting unit configured to detect the sheet of the roll rotating in the second direction; a lower guide that supports the sheet fed from the roll from below; and a contact member configured to contact the roll rotating in the second direction, wherein the direction of rotation of the roll is changed by the driving unit from the second direction to the first direction according to an output from the detecting unit, and the contact member is supported by the lower guide on an upstream side of the detecting unit with respect to a direction in which the sheet is fed from the roll rotating in the first direction. 2. The sheet feeding apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the lower guide moves according to an outer diameter of the roll by being pressed by the outer diameter of the roll. 3. The sheet feeding apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the detecting unit is provided on the lower guide. 4. The sheet feeding apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a second contact member that contacts the roll, wherein when a sheet leading end portion of the roll rotating in the second direction passes through a position where the second contact member contacts, the sheet leading end portion separates from the roll and the sheet approaches the detecting unit. 5. The sheet feeding apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein an output from the detecting unit increases in accordance with a movement of the sheet toward the detecting unit, and decreases in accordance with a subsequent movement of the sheet away from a detecting position of the detecting unit caused by rotation of the roll in the second direction. 6. The sheet feeding apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the detecting unit is an optical sensor including a light emitting unit and a light receiving unit, an output value of the light receiving unit increases as a distance to an outer surface of the sheet decreases, and an output from the detecting unit is produced such that when the roll is rotated in the second direction by the driving unit, the output value rises from within a second level range to within a first level range greater than the second level range and then falls from within the first level range to within the second level range. 7. The sheet feeding apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising an upper guide that is provided above the lower guide, moves in accordance with a change in an outer diameter of the roll by being pressed by the outer diameter of the roll, and regulates the sheet fed from the roll above the sheet fed from the roll, wherein the sheet fed from the roll passes between the upper guide and the lower guide. 8. The sheet feeding apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising an upper guide that is provided above the lower guide, moves in accordance with a change in an outer diameter of the roll, and regulates the sheet above the sheet fed from the roll, wherein the upper guide includes a second contact member that contacts the roll, and when a sheet leading end portion of the roll rotating in the second direction passes through a position where the second contact member contacts, the sheet leading end portion separates from the roll and the sheet approaches the detecting unit. 9. The sheet feeding apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein a distance between a contact position of the contact member and a detection position of the detecting unit in a circumferential direction of the roll is shorter than a distance between the contact position of the contact member and a contact position of the second contact member in the circumferential direction. 10. The sheet feeding apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the detecting unit is an optical sensor provided on the lower guide and includes a light emitting unit and a light receiving unit, and an angle between a virtual line formed by extending a light emitting optical axis of the light emitting unit into the roll and a tangent line in the first direction at an intersection of the light emitting optical axis and an outer periphery of the roll is an acute angle. 11. The sheet feeding apparatus according to claim 10 , wherein the light emitting unit and the light receiving unit are located so as to be shifted in an axial direction of the roll. 12. The sheet feeding apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the detecting unit is an optical sensor including a light emitting unit and a light receiving unit and includes an adjusting unit configured to adjust a detection sensitivity of the light receiving unit based on an output from the detecting unit during rotation of the roll in the second direction. 13. The sheet feeding apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein the adjusting unit adjusts at least one of an amplification factor of a signal of the light receiving unit and a light emission intensity of the light emitting unit. 14. The sheet feeding apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein in a case in which an output of the detecting unit does not change even if the roll is rotated by a predetermined amount in the second direction, the driving unit stops rotating the roll. 15. The sheet feeding apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a notification unit configured to make a notification to prompt a user to feed the sheet manually in a case in which an output of the detecting unit does not change even if the roll is rotated by a predetermined amount in the second direction. 16. The sheet feeding apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the sheet is fed from the roll to a printing unit configured to print an image on the sheet. 17. The sheet feeding apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a printing unit configured to print an image on the sheet, the printing unit being positioned on a downstream side, with respect to a sheet feeding direction, of the lower guide. 18. A sheet feeding apparatus comprising: a driving unit configured to rotate a roll in a first direction for feeding a sheet from the roll, which is formed by winding the sheet, and in a second direction opposite to the first direction; a detecting unit configured to detect the sheet of the roll rotating in the second direction; a lower guide that supports the sheet fed from the roll from below; a contact member configured to contact the roll rotating in the second direction; a pressing member for pressing the lower guide; and a switching unit configured to switch a force of pressing the lower guide by the pressing member, wherein the direction of rotation of the roll is changed by the driving unit from the second direction to the first direction according to an output from the detecting unit, and the contact member is supported by the lower guide on an upstream side of the detecting unit with respect to a direction in which the sheet is fed from the roll. 19.
