Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An aspect of performing on-demand remote snapshot creation for a synchronous replication session between a local system and a remote system of a storage system includes receiving a request for the remote snapshot on the remote system and identifying a current state of the synchronous replication session. The current state is one of a plurality of states. An aspect also includes implementing one or more actions with respect to the remote snapshot as a function of the current state. The actions are performed prior to transitioning from the current state to another state of the plurality of states.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for on-demand remote snapshot creation for a synchronous replication session between a local system and a remote system of a storage system, the method comprising: receiving a request for the remote snapshot on the remote system; identifying a current state of the synchronous replication session, the current state comprising one of a plurality of states; implementing one or more actions with respect to the remote snapshot based on a determination of the current state; and in response to implementing the one or more actions, transitioning from the current state to another state of the plurality of states based on detected system events. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: upon determining the current state of the synchronous replication session is an interim asynchronous state: creating a new snapshot on the local system; assigning a replication cycle number to the new snapshot, the new snapshot configured to be replicated to the remote system in a next replication cycle, wherein the replication cycle number corresponds to the next replication cycle; and postponing transition from the interim asynchronous state to a different state of the plurality of states until replication of the new snapshot to the remote system is completed. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the interim asynchronous state is configured to replicate data differences between sets of snapshots from the local system to the remote system in cycles of the synchronous replication session, and a session consistency point is indicated at the local system and is not indicated at the remote system. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: upon determining the current state of the synchronous replication session is a steady synchronous state: creating a new snapshot on the remote system; and rendering the new snapshot on the remote system available for use during the steady synchronous state. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the new snapshot is created during recovery of the synchronous replication session. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: upon determining the current state of the synchronous replication session is an asynchronous to synchronous state, re-attempting the request for the remote snapshot when the asynchronous to synchronous state is completed. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: upon determining the current state of the synchronous replication session is an asynchronous to synchronous state: suspending replication; waiting for the current state to be in an interim asynchronous state; and creating the remote snapshot in the interim asynchronous state. 8. A system for on-demand remote snapshot creation for a synchronous replication session between a local system and a remote system of a storage system, the system comprising: a memory comprising computer-executable instructions; and a processor operable by a storage system, the processor executing the computer-executable instructions, the computer-executable instructions when executed by the processor cause the processor to perform operations comprising: receiving a request for the remote snapshot on the remote system; identifying a current state of the synchronous replication session, the current state comprising one of a plurality of states; implementing one or more actions with respect to the remote snapshot based on a determination of the current state; and in response to implementing the one or more actions, transitioning from the current state to another state of the plurality of states based on detected system events. 9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise: upon determining the current state of the synchronous replication session is an interim asynchronous state: creating a new snapshot on the local system; assigning a replication cycle number to the new snapshot, the new snapshot configured to be replicated to the remote system in a next replication cycle, wherein the replication cycle number corresponds to the next replication cycle; and postponing transition from the interim asynchronous state to a different state of the plurality of states until replication of the new snapshot to the remote system is completed. 10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the interim asynchronous state is configured to replicate data differences between sets of snapshots from the local system to the remote system in cycles of the synchronous replication session, and a session consistency point is indicated at the local system and is not indicated at the remote system. 11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise: upon determining the current state of the synchronous replication session is a steady synchronous state: creating a new snapshot on the remote system; and rendering the new snapshot on the remote system available for use during the steady synchronous state. 12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the new snapshot is created during recovery of the synchronous replication session. 13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise: upon determining the current state of the synchronous replication session is an asynchronous to synchronous state, re-attempting the request for the remote snapshot when the asynchronous to synchronous state is completed. 14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise: upon determining the current state of the synchronous replication session is an asynchronous to synchronous state: suspending replication; waiting for the current state to be in an interim asynchronous state; and creating the remote snapshot in the interim asynchronous state. 15. A computer program product for performing on-demand remote snapshot creation for a synchronous replication session between a local system and a remote system of a storage system, the computer program product embodied on a non-transitory computer readable medium, the computer program product including instructions that, when executed by a computer, causes the computer to perform operations comprising: receiving a request for the remote snapshot on the remote system; identifying a current state of the synchronous replication session, the current state comprising one of a plurality of states; implementing one or more actions with respect to the remote snapshot based on a determination of the current state; and in response to implementing the one or more actions transitioning from the current state to another state of the plurality of states based on detected system events. 16. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise: upon determining the current state of the synchronous replication session is an interim asynchronous state: creating a new snapshot on the local system; assigning a replication cycle number to the new snapshot, the new snapshot configured to be replicated to the remote system in a next replication cycle, wherein the replication cycle number corresponds to the next replication cycle; and postponing transition from the interim asynchronous state to a different state of the plurality of states until replication of the new snapshot to the remote system is completed. 17. The computer program product of claim 16 , wherein the interim asynchronous state is configured to replicate data differences between sets of snapshots from the local system to the remote system in cycles of the synchronous replication session, and a session consistency point is indicated at the local system and is not indicated at the remote system.
