Official abstract text for this publication.
A method includes providing a reservoir of randomly oriented fibers in a solution, dispensing the solution of randomly oriented fibers through a nozzle having an orientation component onto a porous substrate as a solution of aligned fibers, and immobilizing the fibers to form a fiber pre-form. A system includes a porous substrate, a deposition nozzle, a reservoir of randomly oriented fibers in solution connected to the deposition nozzle, the deposition nozzle position adjacent the porous substrate and connected to the reservoir, the nozzle to receive the randomly oriented fibers and output aligned fibers, and a vacuum connected to the porous substrate to remove fluid from the porous substrate as the deposition nozzle deposits the aligned fibers on the porous substrate to produce a fiber pre-form having aligned fibers.

What is claimed is: 1. A system, comprising: a porous substrate; a reservoir of randomly oriented fibers suspended in a solution; a deposition nozzle positioned adjacent the porous substrate and connected to the reservoir, the deposition nozzle to receive the solution with suspended randomly oriented fibers, to output aligned fibers, and to alter an angle of the randomly oriented fibers as the fibers exit the deposition nozzle, the deposition nozzle having a housing and one of either the housing rotates or the housing contains a rotating ring, the rotating ring or the rotation of the housing is configured to change the angle of the randomly oriented fibers as the randomly oriented fibers exit the deposition nozzle to produce the aligned fibers; and a vacuum connected to the porous substrate to remove the solution from the porous substrate as the deposition nozzle deposits the aligned fibers suspended in the solution on the porous substrate to produce a fiber pre-form having aligned fibers. 2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a reservoir of matrix material positioned such that the matrix material can infuse the fiber pre-form. 3. The system of claim 2 , further comprising a heat source connected to the fiber pre-form. 4. The system of claim 2 , further comprising a pressure source to apply pressure to the matrix material to assist with infiltration of the matrix material and set the matrix material into the fiber pre-form. 5. The system as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the deposition nozzle comprises an applicator to apply the matrix material to the fiber-preform. 6. The system as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the applicator comprises one of a curtain, a slot, and a roll coater. 7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the housing further comprises: an inlet into the housing arranged to receive the solution having the suspended randomly oriented fibers; an orientation component within the housing, the orientation component positioned to receive the solution from the inlet and operate to produce the aligned fibers in a predetermined, single direction; and an outlet on the housing arranged to receive the aligned fibers and deposit them on a substrate. 8. The system as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the orientation component comprises a rolling mill. 9. The system as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the rolling mill comprises one of either a 4-roll or a 2-roll mill. 10. The system as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the orientation component comprises a narrowing contraction followed by an expansion portion. 11. The system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the deposition nozzle comprises spray heads arranged adjacent the porous substrate. 12. The system as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a recycling flow outlet connected to the reservoir.
