Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system and method may improve latency for user equipment (UE) registration in cellular networks. UE registration may retrieve the UE's configuration and subscription data locally rather than from a network or cloud-based unified data management (UDM) entity that manages a unified data repository (UDR). For example, the UE may send a unique identification (e.g., a UE ID) for the UE to a registering entity of a cellular network system. The UE ID may then be used to identify a UE Group Identification for the UE at the UDM. The UE Group Identification may be a pointer to the locally-stored configuration and subscription data for the UE. The entity requesting registration may then use the pointer to retrieve the configuration and subscription data locally rather than a remote entity such as the UDM.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. A system for registering a user equipment (UE) in a cellular network, the system comprising: a base station including a processor and a memory storing instructions for execution by the processor for: receiving a user equipment identification (UE ID) for the user equipment; sending the UE ID to a remote unified data management (UDM) entity; matching the UE ID to a user equipment group identification (UE Group ID) at the remote (UDM); receiving the UE Group ID in response to the UE ID; matching the UE Group ID to locally-stored configuration and subscription data; and registering the UE with the cellular network using the locally-stored configuration and subscription data. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions for receiving the UE ID for the user equipment include receiving the UE ID for the user equipment at an Access and Mobility Function (AMF) entity of the base station. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the instructions for matching the UE ID to the UE Group ID include instructions for sending the UE ID from the AMF entity at the base station to the remote UDM. 4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the instructions for receiving the UE Group ID in response to the UE ID further comprise instructions for execution by the processor for sending a request for the UE Group ID corresponding to the UE ID to the remote UDM. 5. The system of claim 4 , further comprising instructions for execution by the processor for storing the configuration and subscription data for the UE Group ID at a local configuration and subscription data repository of the AMF. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the UE ID includes one or more of a subscriber identification (SUPI), a Permanent Equipment Identifier (PEI), a Globally Unique Temporary Identifier (GUTI), a subscription concealed identifier (SUCI), an Internal Group Identifier, a General Public Subscription Identifier, an access point name (APN), or a data network name (DNN). 7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the locally-stored configuration and subscription data includes one or more of Access and Mobility Subscription Data, Mobility Subscription data, SMF selection data, UE context in SMF data, Radio Access Technologies (RAT) Restriction data, Area Restriction data, Core Network Type restriction data, and Data Network Name data. 8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the UE Group ID includes a pointer to the locally-stored configuration and subscription data. 9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the UE includes a cellular telephone, a smartphone, a smart watch, an Internet of Things device, and a computing device capable of sending and receiving a radio signal for communicating data from the UE to other UEs via the cellular network. 10. The system of claim 9 , further comprising instructions for execution by the processor for categorizing the UE into a UE Group based on one or more of device capabilities and network services. 11. A computer-implemented method for registering user equipment (UE) in a cellular network, the method comprising: receiving a UE ID for the user equipment at a base station of the cellular network; forwarding the UE ID to a unified data management (UDM) entity that is remote from the base station; in response to receiving the UE ID, matching the UE ID to a user equipment group identification (UE Group ID) at the UDM entity; receiving the UE Group ID in response to the UE ID; in response to receiving the UE Group ID, matching the UE Group ID to locally-stored configuration and subscription data; retrieving the locally-stored configuration and subscription data using the received UE Group ID; and registering the UE with the cellular network using the retrieved locally-stored configuration and subscription data. 12. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein forwarding the UE ID to a UDM entity that is remote from the base station includes forwarding a registration request via a service-based interface of the UDM entity. 13. The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the registration request includes an instruction for the UDM entity, the instruction including a Nudm_UECM_Registration_Request to the UDM entity via a network connection of the cellular network. 14. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein receiving the UE ID for the user equipment includes receiving the UE ID for the user equipment at an Access and Mobility Function (AMF) entity of the base station. 15. The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , wherein matching the UE ID to the UE Group ID includes instructions for sending the UE ID from the AMF entity at the base station to the remote UDM. 16. The computer-implemented method of claim 15 , wherein receiving the UE Group ID in response to the UE ID includes: sending a request for the UE Group ID corresponding to the UE ID to a remote unified data management entity (UDM); and storing the configuration and subscription data for the UE Group ID at a local configuration and subscription data repository of the AMF. 17. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein the UE ID includes one or more of a subscriber identification (SUPI), a Permanent Equipment Identifier (PEI), a Globally Unique Temporary Identifier (GUTI), a subscription concealed identifier (SUCI), an Internal Group Identifier, a General Public Subscription Identifier, an access point name (APN), or a data network name (DNN). 18. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein the locally-stored configuration and subscription data includes one or more of Access and Mobility Subscription Data, Mobility Subscription data, SMF selection data, UE context in SMF data, Radio Access Technologies (RAT) Restriction data, Area Restriction data, Core Network Type restriction data, and Data Network Name data. 19. The computer-implemented method of claim 18 , wherein the UE Group ID includes a pointer to the locally-stored configuration and subscription data. 20. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , further comprising categorizing the UE into a UE Group based on one or more of device capabilities and network services, wherein the UE includes a cellular telephone, a smartphone, a smart watch, an Internet of Things device, and a computing device capable of sending and receiving a radio signal for communicating data from the UE to other UEs via the cellular network.
