Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A wireless electrical energy transmission system is provided. The system comprises a wireless transmission base configured to wirelessly transmit electrical energy or data via near field magnetic coupling to a receiving antenna configured within an electronic device. The wireless electrical energy transmission system is configured with at least one transmitting antenna and a transmitting electrical circuit positioned within the transmission base. The transmission base is configured so that at least one electronic device can be wirelessly electrically charged or powered by positioning the at least one device external and adjacent to the transmission base.

What is claimed is: 1. A structure configured to transmit wireless electrical energy, the structure comprising: a base extending from a base proximal end to a base distal end, the base comprising a housing having a first sidewall and a second sidewall, the second sidewall defining a sidewall thickness that extends between opposing interior and exterior sidewall surfaces of the second sidewall; at least one transmitting antenna positioned within the base, wherein the at least one transmitting antenna comprises a transmitting coil configured to resonate at a resonant frequency or a resonant frequency band, wherein a first substrate comprising an electrically insulative material is positioned between the transmitting coil and a second substrate comprising a plurality of separate panes of a magnetic field shielding material, and wherein each of the plurality of separate panes is positioned co-planar with respect to each other; at least one repeater that is (i) positioned adjacent to the interior sidewall surface of the second sidewall surface of the second sidewall and spaced apart from the at least one transmitting antenna, and (ii) configured to receive electrical energy wirelessly from the at least one transmitting antenna and transmit the received electrical energy, wherein the at least one repeater comprises a repeater coil configured to resonate within a repeater resonant frequency band; and a wireless transmitting circuit electrically connected to the at least one transmitting antenna, wherein the wireless transmitting circuit is configured to modify electrical energy from an electrical source to be wirelessly transmitted. 2. The structure of claim 1 further configured to transmit electrical energy at an operating frequency of at least 1 kHz. 3. The structure of claim 1 further configured to transmit electrical energy at an operating frequency ranging from about 1 kHz to about 100 MHz. 4. The structure of claim 1 further configured to transmit electrical energy having a magnitude from about 100 mW to about 500 W. 5. The structure of claim 1 wherein a capacitor is electrically connected to the transmitting coil. 6. The structure of claim 5 wherein the capacitor comprises a surface mount capacitor, a parallel plate capacitor, or an interdigitated capacitor. 7. The structure of claim 1 wherein the resonant frequency is at least 1 kHz or wherein the resonant frequency band extends from about 1 kHz to about 100 MHz. 8. The structure of claim 1 wherein the transmitting coil of the at least one transmitting antenna is positioned having a gap between the interior sidewall surface and the transmitting coil. 9. The structure of claim 1 wherein the transmitting coil of the at least one transmitting antenna is positioned in physical contact with the interior sidewall surface. 10. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the second substrate is positioned between the transmitting coil and a conductive material. 11. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the magnetic field shielding material is selected from a group consisting of a zinc comprising ferrite material, manganese-zinc, nickel-zinc, copper-zinc, magnesium-zinc, and combinations thereof. 12. The structure of claim 1 wherein the magnetic field shielding material has a loss tangent less than about 0.70. 13. The structure of claim 1 wherein a space separates the transmitting coil from at least one of the first substrate and the second substrate. 14. The structure of claim 1 wherein separate panes of the plurality of separate panes are separated by a magnetic field shielding gap that resides between adjacent separate panes. 15. The structure of claim 14 wherein the magnetic field shielding gap ranges from about 0.1 mm to about 10 mm. 16. The structure of claim 1 wherein a gap extends between the at least one transmitting antenna and a bottom sidewall that resides at the base proximal end. 17. The structure of claim 1 wherein the housing is comprised of an electrically non-conductive material. 18. The structure of claim 1 wherein the housing sidewall thickness is less than about 5 mm. 19. The structure of claim 1 wherein the wireless transmitting circuit comprises a transmitting antenna selector sub-circuit that enables selection of the at least one transmitting antenna that wirelessly transmits the electrical energy. 20. The structure of claim 1 wherein at least one of the first substrate and the second substrate are flexible.
