Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A harvesting header of an agricultural machine includes a frame, a cutting mechanism coupled to the frame and configured to cut crop, an auger rotatably coupled to the frame at a location rearward of the cutting mechanism, and an impeller rotatably coupled to the frame at a location rearward of the auger. The impeller is configured to receive crop from the auger and condition the cut crop. The crop is projected by the auger in a rearward and upward direction relative to the impeller.

The invention claimed is: 1. A harvesting header of an agricultural machine, comprising: a frame; a cutting mechanism coupled to the frame, wherein the cutting mechanism cuts crop; an auger including an auger rotation axis, the auger rotatably coupled to the frame at a location rearward of the cutting mechanism, wherein, crop is projected by the auger in a rearward and upward direction relative to an impeller; wherein the impeller is located adjacent to the auger and is rotatably coupled to the frame at a location rearward of the auger, the impeller comprising an elongated drum having an impeller axis located rearwardly and upwardly from the auger rotation axis and a plurality of tines coupled to the elongated drum, wherein the impeller is configured to receive crop directly from the auger and conditions the cut crop; and a hood assembly disposed at least partially above and spaced from the impeller to define a gap therebetween, wherein crop passes through the gap and the crop is conditioned. 2. The harvesting header of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of tines is pivotally coupled to the drum via a clip. 3. The harvesting header of claim 1 , wherein the hood assembly is movable relative to the impeller to increase or decrease a size of the gap to respectively decrease or increase friction on the crop. 4. The harvesting header of claim 3 , wherein the hood assembly pivots about a pivot axis relative to the impeller to increase or decrease the size of the gap. 5. The harvesting header of claim 1 , wherein the hood assembly comprises a swath board assembly for directing the crop in a rearward direction relative to the impeller. 6. The harvesting header of claim 1 , further comprising at least one or more converging drums coupled to the frame and suspended at least partially above and rearward of the cutting mechanism, the one or more drums move cut crop from the cutting mechanism inwardly toward the middle of the harvesting header for converging the cut crop and rearwardly to the auger. 7. The harvesting header of claim 1 , wherein the auger is rotatably driven about an auger axis and the impeller is rotatably driven about an impeller axis, where the impeller axis is located rearward of auger axis. 8. The harvesting header of claim 7 , wherein the impeller axis is located above the auger axis. 9. The harvesting header of claim 1 , wherein the auger comprises an elongated cylindrical roll including a flighting portion and an angled portion, the fighting portion moves cut crop to a center portion of the roll and the angled portion moves the cut crop upwardly towards the impeller. 10. The harvesting header of claim 9 , wherein the angled portion is located inwardly of the fighting portion along the roll. 11. The harvesting header of claim 1 , further comprising a fluffer assembly located rearwardly and adjacent to the impeller. 12. An agricultural machine, comprising: a windrower configured to be towed through a field; a harvesting header coupled to the windrower, the harvesting header including a frame and a cutting mechanism coupled to the frame for cutting crop; an auger including an auger rotation axis, the auger rotatably coupled to the frame at a location rearward of the cutting mechanism; and an impeller rotatably coupled to the frame at a location adjacent to and rearward of the auger, the impeller comprises an elongated drum having an impeller axis located rearwardly and upwardly from the auger rotation axis and a plurality of tines, wherein each of the plurality of tines is pivotally coupled to the drum, the impeller receives cut crop from the auger and conditions the cut crop; wherein, the auger directs cut crop in a rearward and upward direction relative to the impeller. 13. The agricultural machine of claim 12 , further comprising a hood assembly disposed at least partially above and spaced from the impeller to define a gap therebetween. 14. The agricultural machine of claim 12 , wherein the auger comprises an elongated cylindrical roll including a flighting portion and an angled portion, the fighting portion moves cut crop to a center portion of the roll and the angled portion moves the cut crop upwardly towards the impeller. 15. A method of conditioning crop during a crop cutting operation, comprising: providing a windrower or carrier frame and tongue assembly including a cutting mechanism, an auger having an auger rotation axis, an impeller located adjacent to and rearward of the auger, the impeller having an elongated drum having an impeller rotation axis and a plurality of tines attached to the elongated drum, the impeller rotation axis being located rearwardly and upwardly of the auger rotation axis, and an impeller hood assembly; travelling in a work direction along an underlying surface and cutting crop with the cutting mechanism; moving the cut crop from the cutting mechanism inwardly and rearwardly by the auger; projecting the cut crop rearwardly and upwardly via the auger to the impeller; directing the cut crop through a gap defined between the impeller and the impeller hood assembly; and conditioning the crop as it passes through the gap by the impeller. 16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the plurality of tines is pivotally coupled to the elongated drum of the impeller.
