Systems and methods are described herein for efficiently “catching-up” a user that is interested in a media asset when that user has missed a portion of the media asset while consuming the media asset together with other people. The system may detect that multiple people are consuming a media asset and may determine, based on a respective profile of each person, whether that person is interested in the media asset. When the system detects that the user is disregarding the media asset, the missed portion of the media asset is stored if the user is interested in the media asset, and is not stored if the user is not interested in the media asset.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for effective utilization of resources by restricting initialization of a catch-up mechanism to users that are interested in a media asset, the method comprising: receiving, from an image sensor, while a media asset is being played by a media device, an image representing a plurality of users consuming the media asset; performing image recognition of the image; based on the image recognition and for each respective user of the plurality of users: identifying a profile of the respective user; determining a visual field of the respective user; detecting, based on the visual field of the respective user, whether the respective user is disregarding the media asset; and determining whether the respective user is interested in the media asset by comparing metadata of the media asset to the profile of the respective user; based on detecting whether each user of the plurality of users is disregarding the media asset and determining whether each user of the plurality of users is interested in the media asset, determining (i) a first subset of the plurality of users, wherein each user of the first subset is interested in the media asset and is disregarding the media asset and (ii) a second subset of the plurality of users that is not interested in the media asset; determining whether the first subset contains more users than the second subset; in response to determining that the first subset contains more users than the second subset, automatically beginning to record media data of a portion of the media asset that is being played by the media device, wherein the recording begins at a time corresponding to an earliest time when the first subset started disregarding the media asset, and wherein beginning to record the portion of the media asset that is being played by the media device comprises: identifying user equipment corresponding to each respective user of the first subset; and transmitting the portion of the media asset to the identified user equipment of the respective user; in response to determining that the second subset has more users than the first subset, refraining from automatically beginning to record the portion of the media asset that is being played by the media device; and in response to a request to play the media asset, playing the portion of the media asset that was recorded. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: determining whether the identified user equipment is able to play a type of media associated with the media asset; and in response to determining that the identified user equipment is not able to play the type of media associated with the media asset: identifying, based on the respective user's profile, another user equipment associated with the respective user that is able to record the media asset; and scheduling, on the identified another user equipment, the media asset for recording. 3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, in response to determining that a user of the second subset is not interested in the media asset: detecting a plurality of accessible user equipment; identifying a user equipment of the plurality of accessible user equipment that is associated with the user of the second subset that is disregarding the media asset; and generating for display a prompt on the identified user equipment to schedule the media asset for recording. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein detecting whether the respective user is disregarding the media asset comprises: detecting that the respective user's eyes are not turned in the direction of the media asset; activating a timer that tracks a period of time that the respective user's eyes are not turned in the direction of the media asset; determining, based on the timer, that the period of time for which the respective user's eyes are not turned in the direction of the media asset is greater than a threshold; and in response to determining, based on the timer, that the period of time for which the respective user's eyes are not turned in the direction of the media asset is greater than the threshold, detecting that the respective user is disregarding the media asset. 5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: detecting that each user of the first subset is no longer disregarding the media asset; determining whether the first subset was disregarding the media asset for a total time period that is less than a threshold time period; and in response to determining that the first subset was disregarding the media asset for the total time period that is less than the threshold time period, deleting the portion of the media asset that was recorded. 6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising: in response to determining that the first subset was disregarding the media asset for the total time period that is greater than the threshold time period, prompting each respective user of the first subset as to whether to delete the portion of the media asset that was recorded. 7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising generating for display an option to consume the portion of the media asset that was recorded. 8. The method of claim 6 , wherein prompting each respective user of the first subset whether to delete the portion of the media asset that was recorded comprises prompting the respective user at a mobile user equipment associated with the respective user. 9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: determining that the media asset is an audio-visual media asset; determining that the portion of the media asset does not contain dialogue; and in response to determining that the portion of the media asset does not contain dialogue, generating for display the video of the portion of the media asset that was recorded at an increased speed. 10. A system for effective utilization of resources by restricting initialization of a catch-up mechanism to users that are interested in a media asset, the system comprising: an image sensor; media output circuitry configured to play media assets; storage; and control circuitry configured to: receive, from the image sensor, while a media asset is being played using the media output circuitry, an image representing a plurality of users consuming the media asset; perform image recognition of the image; based on the image recognition and for each respective user of the plurality of users: identify a profile of the respective user; determine a visual field of the respective user; detect, based on the visual field of the respective user, whether the respective user is disregarding the media asset; and determine whether the respective user is interested in the media asset by comparing metadata of the media asset to the profile of the respective user; based on detecting whether each user of the plurality of users is disregarding the media asset and determining whether each user of the plurality of users is interested in the media asset, determine (i) a first subset of the plurality of users, wherein each user of the first subset is interested in the media asset and is disregarding the media asset and (ii) a second subset of the plurality of users that is not interested in the media asset determine whether the first subset contains more users than the second subset; in response to determining that the first subset contains more users than the second subset, automatically begin to record, on the storage, media data of a portion of the media asset that is being played, wherein the recording begins at a time corresponding to an earliest time when the first subset started disregarding the media asset, and wherein the control circuitry is configured to begin to record the portion of the media asset that is being play
