Official abstract text for this publication.
Features for loading, transporting and unloading of items are disclosed. Systems, devices and methods for such operations using a tray are described. In some embodiments, a tray having a moveable bottom allows for switching between a configuration for loading and unloading items in and out of the tray and a configuration for transportation of items inside the tray. The trays may also be stacked, for transportation of multiple trays at once, and nested, for saving space when storing the trays. In some embodiments, the trays may be used in conjunction with loading and unloading systems.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for loading a tray comprising: positioning an item on a loading shelf; positioning a sidewall of the tray at an angle with respect to the loading shelf; moving a moveable bottom of the tray to a first position such that the moveable bottom and the loading shelf form a continuous surface; sliding the item along the continuous surface from the loading shelf and onto the moveable bottom; moving the moveable bottom to a second position inside a cavity defined by a sidewall of the tray such that the moveable bottom is adjacent to a bottom side of the tray; positioning a sidewall of the tray at an angle with respect to an unloading surface; moving the moveable bottom to the first position such that the moveable bottom and the unloading surface form a second continuous surface; and sliding the item along the second continuous surface from the moveable bottom and onto the unloading surface. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising positioning a carriage proximate the loading shelf. 3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising positioning the tray on the carriage. 4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising connecting the carriage to the loading shelf. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein connecting the carriage to the loading shelf comprises connecting the carriage to a rail extending along an edge of the loading shelf. 6. The method of claim 2 , further comprising positioning an unloading shelf between the loading shelf and the tray, the unloading shelf connected to the carriage between the loading shelf and the tray and forming a part of the continuous surface. 7. The method of claim 2 , wherein moving the moveable bottom to the first position comprises lowering the tray on the carriage and contacting the moveable bottom with an arm connected to the carriage, such that the arm moves the moveable bottom to the first position. 8. The method of claim 2 , wherein moving the moveable bottom to the first position comprises moving an arm connected to the carriage upward to push a portion of the moveable bottom to the first position. 9. The method of claim 4 , further comprising moving the carriage along the rail to a position proximate a second loading shelf. 10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising removing the tray into which the item from the loading shelf has been loaded, and positioning a second tray on the carriage. 11. The method of claim 9 , wherein moving the carriage along the rail comprises automatically moving the carriage along the rail. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the item slides along the loading shelf in response to an automatic sweeper arm moving the item. 13. A method for loading a tray comprising: positioning an item on a loading shelf; positioning a carriage proximate the loading shelf, the carriage having a tray thereon; positioning an unloading shelf between the loading shelf and the tray, the unloading shelf connected to the carriage between the loading shelf and the tray and forming a part of the continuous surface positioning a sidewall of the tray at an angle with respect to the loading shelf; moving a moveable bottom of the tray to a first position such that the moveable bottom and the loading shelf form a continuous surface; sliding the item along the continuous surface from the loading shelf and onto the moveable bottom; and moving the moveable bottom to a second position inside a cavity defined by a sidewall of the tray such that the moveable bottom is adjacent to a bottom side of the tray. 14. The method of claim 13 , wherein moving the moveable bottom to the first position comprises lowering the tray on the carriage and contacting the moveable bottom with an arm connected to the carriage, such that the arm moves the moveable bottom to the first position. 15. The method of claim 14 , wherein moving the moveable bottom to the first position comprises moving an arm connected to the carriage upward to push a portion of the moveable bottom to the first position.
