Filter capsules for showers and sinks used in surgical settings, clean rooms and other contaminant-sensitive settings having modified outlets for improved splash control. Flat, concave, convex, asymmetric concave and asymmetric convex outlet inserts have pluralities of fluid bores with varying orientations to permit enhanced fluid flow control out of the filter capsules including divergent, convergent and mixed divergent/convergent fluid flows. An inlet with an axis offset at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the filter capsule body permits user control over the fluid flow strike point in a sink or shower stall via rotation of the capsule about the inlet connection point. A recessed outlet improves the prevention of contaminant dispersal by recessing the outlet away from contact points and potential contaminant sources. A filter cartridge top cap includes a downwardly extending extension with a concave bottom end to redirect fluids undesirably entering the filter capsule from the outlet away from the enclosed filter media and out the outlet.

The invention claimed is: 1. A filter capsule comprising: a capsule wall having a longitudinal axis and partially defining a capsule chamber; a filter cartridge having a filter core and filter media secured to and surrounding the filter core, wherein the filter cartridge is secured in the capsule chamber; a capsule top cap secured to a top end of the capsule wall and having an inlet extending upwardly from the capsule top cap with an axis offset from the longitudinal axis, wherein the inlet defines a fluid inlet port; a recessed outlet secured to a bottom end of the capsule wall, wherein the recessed outlet has a radially extended flange defining an outlet port and a recessed outlet wall extending inwardly into the filter core, wherein the filter core is superposed about the recessed outlet wall, and wherein the combination of the radially extended flange, capsule wall and capsule top cap defines the capsule chamber; and a plurality of columns formed about an inner surface of the capsule wall, wherein each column of the plurality of columns has a top end that defines a cartridge cap receiving slot. 2. A filter capsule comprising: a capsule wall having a longitudinal axis and partially defining a capsule chamber; a filter cartridge having a filter core and filter media secured to and surrounding the filter core, wherein the filter cartridge is secured in the capsule chamber; a capsule top cap secured to a top end of the capsule wall; an inlet integral with and extending upwardly from the capsule top cap, wherein the inlet is fixed at an acute angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the capsule wall, wherein the inlet has an axis oriented at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the capsule wall, and wherein the inlet defines a fluid inlet port; a recessed outlet secured to a bottom end of the capsule wall, wherein the recessed outlet has a radially extended flange defining an outlet port and a recessed outlet wall extending inwardly into the filter core, wherein the filter core is superposed about the recessed outlet wall, and wherein the combination of the radially extended flange, capsule wall and capsule top cap define the capsule chamber; a plurality of columns formed about an inner surface of the capsule wall; and an annular ring connected to the plurality of columns, wherein an outer radial edge of the annular ring is spaced from an inner surface of the capsule wall to form a segmented fluid communication gap to permit fluids to flow between the plurality of columns from the top ends of the plurality of columns to bottom ends of the plurality of columns. 3. The filter capsule of claim 2 , wherein the recessed outlet has an outlet end formed at a top end of the recessed outlet wall. 4. The filter capsule of claim 3 further comprising at least one fluid aperture formed in the outlet end, wherein the at least one fluid aperture is in fluid communication with a downstream side of the filter core. 5. The filter capsule of claim 4 wherein the filter core comprises a plurality of core slots to permit fluid communication from an upstream surface of the filter core to a downstream surface of the filter core, wherein the downstream surface of the filter core is in fluid communication with the at least one fluid aperture of the recessed outlet. 6. The filter capsule of claim 2 further comprising a filter cartridge cap secured to the top ends of the plurality of columns and the top end of the filter core, wherein a diameter of the filter cartridge cap is smaller than the cross-sectional diameter of the capsule chamber, and wherein a gap is formed between a top surface of the filter cartridge cap and a bottom surface of the capsule top cap, wherein the gap is in fluid communication with the inlet and the capsule chamber. 7. The filter capsule of claim 2 wherein the recessed outlet wall is tapered wherein a top end of the recessed outlet wall has a smaller cross-sectional diameter than a cross-sectional diameter of a bottom end of the recessed outlet wall. 8. A filter capsule comprising: a capsule wall having a longitudinal axis and partially defining a capsule chamber; a filter cartridge having a filter core and filter media secured to and surrounding the filter core, wherein the filter cartridge is secured in the capsule chamber; a capsule top cap secured to a top end of the capsule wall; an inlet integral with and extending upwardly from the capsule top cap, wherein the inlet is fixed at an acute angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the capsule wall, wherein the inlet has an axis oriented at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the capsule wall, and wherein the inlet defines a fluid inlet port; and, a recessed outlet secured to a bottom end of the capsule wall, wherein the recessed outlet has a radially extended flange defining an outlet port and a recessed outlet wall extending inwardly into the filter core, wherein the filter core is superposed about the recessed outlet wall, and wherein the combination of the radially extended flange, capsule wall and capsule top cap define the capsule chamber; wherein a cartridge top is formed with a cylindrical cartridge top extension that extends downwardly into the filter core and has a concave surface formed on a bottom side of the cylindrical cartridge top extension. 9. A filter capsule comprising: a capsule wall, wherein the capsule wall has a longitudinal axis and partially defines a capsule chamber; a filter having filter media wherein the filter is secured in the capsule chamber; a capsule top cap having an inlet extending upwardly from the capsule top cap with an axis offset from the capsule wall longitudinal axis, wherein the inlet defines a fluid inlet port; a recessed outlet secured to a bottom end of the capsule wall, wherein the recessed outlet has a recessed outlet wall extending inwardly into the capsule chamber; a plurality of support columns formed about an inner surface of the capsule wall; and a filter cartridge cap engaged with the filter, wherein the filter cartridge cap is formed with a cylindrical top extension that extends downwardly and has a concave surface formed on a bottom side of the cylindrical top extension. 10.
