Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Disclosed herein are several embodiments of a reduced pressure appliance and methods of using the same in the treatment of wounds. Some embodiments are directed to improved fluidic connectors or suction adapters for connecting to a wound site, for example using softer, kink-free conformable suction adapters. Certain embodiments are directed to connectors used to connect fluid passage tube used in transmitting negative pressure to a fabric channel used in a suction adapter.

What is claimed is: 1. A negative pressure wound treatment system comprising: a wound dressing; an elongate bridge comprising: a fluid channel comprising a fabric material; and an enlarged distal end configured to be attached to the wound dressing; and a connector configured to connect to a conduit which is configured to deliver negative pressure to the wound from a source of negative pressure, the connector comprising: a proximal end configured to be coupled to the conduit; and a distal end coupled to the fluid channel comprising the fabric material; wherein the distal end of the connector extends into and beyond a proximal end of the fabric material and is adhered within the fabric material such that the fabric material surrounds a portion of the connector, and wherein the distal end of the connector comprises one or more projections extending distally from the connector, each projection configured to adhere to the fabric material, and each projection including at least one at least partially laterally extending barb. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the connector further comprises a lip at the proximal end of the connector, the lip configured to be press fit with the conduit. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the lip has a frustoconical shape. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the connector further comprises a hollow cylindrical body extending between the proximal end and the distal end of the connector and a central channel extending through the hollow cylindrical body. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wound dressing comprises a cover layer configured to be positioned over a wound and sealed to skin surrounding the wound. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the elongate bridge is configured to attach to the wound dressing and surround at least one aperture formed in the wound dressing. 7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fabric material comprises knitted fibers. 8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fabric material comprises nylon. 9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the connector is configured to withstand a pulling force of up to 20 kg before disengaging from the fabric material. 10. A negative pressure wound treatment system comprising: a wound dressing comprising a cover layer configured to be positioned over a wound and sealed to skin surrounding the wound; and a suction adapter comprising: a top layer constructed from a liquid impermeable material; a bottom layer constructed from a liquid impermeable material; a spacer layer located between the top and bottom layers, the spacer layer comprising a fabric material; an elongate channel extending between the top and bottom layers containing the spacer layer, wherein the top layer and the bottom layer include enlarged distal ends with the channel extending in a proximal direction away from the enlarged ends; wherein the suction adapter is configured to attach to the cover layer and surround at least one aperture formed in the cover layer; and a connector configured to connect to a conduit which is configured deliver negative pressure to the wound from a source of negative pressure, the connector comprising: a proximal end configured to be coupled to the conduit; and a distal end coupled to the elongate channel containing the spacer layer; and wherein the distal end of the connector extends into and beyond a proximal end of the spacer layer and is adhered within the fabric material of the spacer layer such that the fabric material surrounds a portion of the connector and wherein the distal end of the connector comprises one or more projections extending distally from the connector, each projection configured to be pushed into and be retained within the fabric material of the elongate channel, and each projection including at least one at least partially laterally extending barb. 11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the connector further comprises a frustoconical lip at the proximal end of the connector, the lip configured to be press fit with the tube. 12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the connector further comprises a hollow cylindrical body extending between the proximal end and the distal end of the connector and a central channel extending through the hollow cylindrical body. 13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the fabric material comprises knitted fibers. 14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the fabric material comprises nylon. 15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the connector is configured to withstand a pulling force of up to 20 kg before disengaging from the fabric material. 16. The system of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the connector hooks onto fibers of the fabric material. 17. The system of claim 10 , wherein a portion of the connector hooks onto fibers of the fabric material.
