Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Devices, systems and methods for hanging one or more objects, such as frames, on a surface. A marking device for marking a surface for hanging one or more objects. The marking device can have a main body portion having first and second arms pivotably attached thereto. The first and second arms, as well as the main body, can each have a marker to mark a target surface. The marking device can optionally have a level indicator and the first and second arms can have markers which can slide along a ruled measure for convenient positioning of marks on the target surface. Optionally, the markers can have biased, retractable, or sheathed marker pins.

The invention claimed is: 1. A stud finder, comprising: a first capacitive plate; a second capacitive plate adjacent to the first capacitive plate; a third capacitive plate adjacent to the second capacitive plate; a fourth capacitive plate adjacent to the third capacitive plate; a first indicator associated with the first capacitive plate; a second indicator associated with the second capacitive plate; a third indicator associated with the third capacitive plate; a fourth indicator associated with the fourth capacitive plate; a gripping portion; wherein the first capacitive plate, the second capacitive plate, the third capacitive plate and the fourth capacitive plate are positioned to have at least a portion along a finding axis when used adjacent to a surface; wherein the gripping portion is not parallel to the finding axis; wherein the first indicator, the second indicator, the third indicator and the fourth indicator are selectively activatable to indicate the location of a stud; and wherein the gripping portion is disposed at an angle with respect to the finding axis; and wherein the angle is between 33 and 90 degrees. 2. The stud finder of claim 1 , wherein the stud finder has a head portion; and wherein the first capacitive plate, the second capacitive plate, the third capacitive plate and the fourth capacitive plate are disposed in the head portion. 3. The stud finder of claim 2 , wherein the first indicator, the second indicator, the third indicator and the fourth indicator are disposed in the head portion. 4. The stud finder of claim 3 , wherein the first indicator is aligned with the first capacitive plate, such that the first indicator is activated when the first capacitive plate is disposed on the surface over the stud. 5. The stud finder of claim 4 , wherein the second indicator is aligned with the second indicator such that the second indicator is activated when the second capacitive plate is disposed on the surface over the stud; wherein the third indicator is aligned with the third capacitive plate, such that the third indicator is activated when the third capacitive plate is disposed on the surface over the stud; and wherein the fourth indicator is aligned with the fourth indicator such that the fourth indicator is activated when the fourth capacitive plate is disposed on the surface over the stud. 6. The stud finder of claim 5 , wherein the first indicator, the second indicator, the third indicator and the fourth indicator are LEDs. 7. The stud finder of claim 1 , wherein the gripping portion comprises a handle; wherein the handle has a handle centerline; and wherein the handle centerline is transverse to the finding axis. 8. The stud finder of claim 1 , wherein the handle has a handle width that is transverse to the handle centerline; wherein the head portion has head portion width along the finding axis; and wherein the head portion width is at least 1.5 times as large as the handle width. 9. The stud finder of claim 8 , wherein the head portion width is at least 2 times as large as the handle width. 10. The stud finder of claim 1 , wherein the stud finder is configured to indicate the location of only a single stud at one time. 11. The stud finder of claim 1 , wherein the stud finder is configured such that a maximum of three of the first indicator, the second indicator, the third indicator and the fourth indicator are activated at the same time to indicate the location of the stud. 12. The stud finder of claim 1 , wherein the first capacitive plate, the second capacitive plate, the third capacitive plate and the fourth capacitive plate are each substantially rectangular shaped. 13. The stud finder of claim 12 , wherein the first capacitive plate, the second capacitive plate, the third capacitive plate and the fourth capacitive plate each have the same shape. 14. A stud finder, comprising: a first capacitive plate; a second capacitive plate adjacent to the first capacitive plate; a third capacitive plate adjacent to the second capacitive plate; a fourth capacitive plate adjacent to the third capacitive plate; a fifth capacitive plate adjacent to the fourth capacitive plate; a sixth capacitive plate adjacent to the fifth capacitive plate; a first indicator associated with the first capacitive plate; a second indicator associated with the second capacitive plate; a third indicator associated with the third capacitive plate; a fourth indicator associated with the fourth capacitive plate; a fifth indicator associated with the fifth capacitive plate; a sixth indicator associated with the sixth capacitive plate; a gripping portion; wherein the first capacitive plate, the second capacitive plate, the third capacitive plate, the fourth capacitive plate, the fifth capacitive plate and the sixth capacitive plate are positioned to have at least a portion along a finding axis when used adjacent to a surface; wherein the gripping portion is wherein the gripping portion is disposed at an angle with respect to the finding axis; wherein the angle is between 33 and 90 degrees; and wherein the first indicator, the second indicator, the third indicator, the fourth indicator, the fifth indicator and the sixth indicator are selectively activatable to indicate the location of a stud. 15. The stud finder of claim 14 , wherein the stud finder is configured to indicate the location of only a single stud at one time. 16. The stud finder of claim 15 , wherein the first indicator is aligned with the first capacitive plate, such that the first indicator is activated when the first capacitive plate is disposed on the surface over the stud; wherein the second indicator is aligned with the second indicator such that the second indicator is activated when the second capacitive plate is disposed on the surface over the stud; and wherein the third indicator is aligned with the third capacitive plate, such that the third indicator is activated when the third capacitive plate is disposed on the surface over the stud. 17. The stud finder of claim 15 , wherein the first capacitive plate, the second capacitive plate, the third capacitive plate, the fourth capacitive plate, the fifth capacitive plate and the sixth capacitive plate are each substantially rectangular shaped. 18. The stud finder of claim 15 , wherein the first capacitive plate, the second capacitive plate, the third capacitive plate and the fourth capacitive plate each have the same size and shape.
