Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A passive cable adaptor for connecting a data source device with a display device is described. The adaptor has a packet-based interface connector at one end, the connector having a positive main link pin, a negative main link pin, a positive auxiliary channel pin, and a negative auxiliary channel pin. At the other end is a micro serial interface connector, wherein multimedia content is transmitted over the cable adaptor and electrical power is supplied over the cable adaptor simultaneously. The cable adaptor has an auxiliary and hot plug detect (HPD) controller utilized to map the auxiliary channel and HPD signals of the packet-based digital display to the micro serial interface ID signal.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method performed by a multimedia device, the method comprising: monitoring voltage levels at a serial interface power terminal and a packet-based interface power terminal; receiving power from an external display device; determining, from the monitored voltage levels at the serial interface power terminal and packet-based interface power terminal, whether the external display device includes a packet-based interface and whether the external display device includes a serial interface; and mapping packet-based transmission and reception signals of the multimedia device to packet-based transmission and reception signals of the external display device in response to determining that the external display device includes a packet-based interface, wherein said mappings enable transport of a multimedia data stream from the multimedia device to the external display device, wherein, mapping packet-based transmission and reception signals of the multimedia device to packet-based transmission and reception signals of the external display device includes mapping high-speed transmission signals to main link signals and mapping high-speed receiving signals to auxiliary channel signals; and mapping high-speed transmission signals to main link signals includes mapping an HSTX positive signal to a main link positive signal and mapping an HSTX negative signal to a main link negative signal. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein mapping high-speed receiving signals to auxiliary channel signals includes mapping a high-speed receiving positive signal to an auxiliary channel positive signal and mapping a high-speed receiving negative signal to an auxiliary channel negative signal. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining whether the external display device includes a packet-based interface and whether the external display device includes a serial interface includes: determining that the external display device does not have a packet-based interface or a serial interface if the voltage levels at the serial interface power terminal and the packet-based interface power terminal are both low; determining that the external display device has a packet-based interface and a serial interface if the voltage levels at the serial interface power terminal and the packet-based interface power terminal are both high; determining that the external display device has a packet-based interface and does not have a serial interface if the voltage level at the packet-based interface power terminal is high and the voltage level at the serial interface power terminal is low; and determining that the external display device does not have a packet-based interface and has a serial interface if the voltage level at the serial interface power terminal is high and the voltage level at the packet-based interface power terminal is low. 4. The method of claim 1 , comprising transporting the multimedia data stream from the multimedia device to the external display device while receiving power from the external display device. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving power from the external display device includes receiving power through a packet-based interface power terminal if the external display device does not include a serial interface. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein receiving power from the external display device includes receiving power through the packet-based interface power terminal and through the serial interface power terminal, if the external display device does include a serial interface. 7. A method performed by a multimedia device, the method comprising: monitoring voltage levels at a serial interface power terminal and a packet-based interface power terminal; determining, from the monitored voltage levels at the serial interface power terminal and packet-based interface power terminal, whether the external display device includes a packet-based interface and whether the external display device includes a serial interface; mapping packet-based signals of the multimedia device to packet-based signals of the external display device in response to determining that the external display device includes a packet-based interface; and receiving power through a packet-based interface power terminal and through the serial interface power terminal, if the external display device does include a serial interface, wherein, mapping packet-based signals of the multimedia device to packet-based signals of the external display device includes mapping high-speed transmission signals to main link signals and mapping high-speed receiving signals to auxiliary channel signals; and mapping high-speed transmission signals to main link signals includes mapping an HSTX positive signal to a main link positive signal and mapping an HSTX negative signal to a main link negative signal. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein mapping high-speed receiving signals to auxiliary channel signals includes mapping a high-speed receiving positive signal to an auxiliary channel positive signal and mapping a high-speed receiving negative signal to an auxiliary channel negative signal. 9. The method of claim 7 , wherein determining whether the external display device includes a packet-based interface and whether the external display device includes a serial interface includes: determining that the external display device does not have a packet-based interface or a serial interface if the voltage levels at the serial interface power terminal and the packet-based interface power terminal are both low; determining that the external display device has a packet-based interface and a serial interface if the voltage levels at the serial interface power terminal and the packet-based interface power terminal are both high; determining that the external display device has a packet-based interface and does not have a serial interface if the voltage level at the packet-based interface power terminal is high and the voltage level at the serial interface power terminal is low; and determining that the external display device does not have a packet-based interface and has a serial interface if the voltage level at the serial interface power terminal is high and the voltage level at the packet-based interface power terminal is low. 10. The method of claim 7 , comprising transporting the multimedia data stream from the multimedia device to the external display device while receiving power from the external display device. 11. The method of claim 7 , comprising receiving power from the external display device only through the packet-based interface power terminal if the external display device does not include a serial interface. 12. A multimedia data source device, comprising: an interface system to couple with an external display device, the interface system including a serial interface power terminal and a packet-based interface power terminal and being configured to receiving power from the external display device; and a multimedia data processor coupled to the interface system and configured to: monitor voltage levels at the serial interface power terminal and the packet-based interface power terminal; receive power from the external display device via the interface system; determine, from the monitored voltage levels at the serial interface power terminal and packet-based interface power terminal, whether the external display device includes a packet-based interface and whether the external display device includes a serial interface; map packet-based transmission and reception signals of the multimedia device to packet-based transmission and reception signals of the external display device in response to dete
