The invention claimed is: 1. A receptacle comprising: opposed members; a plurality of chambers having perimeter walls defined by seals formed between the opposed members and portals interconnecting the chambers, wherein the plurality of chambers includes a sample chamber comprising an upper region and a lower region with a restricted section between the upper region and the lower region; a rigid frame supporting the opposed members at their peripheral edges, wherein the frame comprises a front frame component and a rear frame component, and wherein the peripheral edges of the opposed members are retained between the front and rear frame components, wherein the rear frame component includes parallel vertical side portions and parallel horizontal top and bottom portions, and the front frame component includes parallel vertical side portions that align with the vertical side portions of the rear frame component and a top horizontal portion that aligns with the top horizontal portion of the rear frame component, and wherein the front frame component lacks a bottom horizontal portion aligned with the bottom horizontal portion of the rear frame component; and an inlet port tube that extends between the front and rear frame portions and into an inlet channel that extends to the upper region of the sample chamber. 2. The receptacle of claim 1 , further including a port cover configured to close off the inlet port tube. 3. The receptacle of claim 1 , wherein the frame comprises an identifying label. 4. The receptacle of claim 3 , wherein the identifying label comprises a bar code. 5. The receptacle of claim 1 , wherein the frame comprises a tab projecting from the frame to provide an appendage for grasping the receptacle. 6. The receptacle of claim 5 , wherein the inlet port tube extends through the tab. 7. The receptacle of claim 1 , wherein the front frame component and the rear frame component are injection molded and are connected to one another by ultrasonic welding. 8. The receptacle of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the opposed members comprises a flexible sheet. 9. The receptacle of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the opposed members comprises a foil layer. 10. The receptacle of claim 1 , wherein each of the portals comprises an openable seal, and wherein the seals defining the chambers comprise permanent seals formed under different conditions than the openable seals. 11. The receptacle of claim 10 , wherein the openable seals are chevron seals. 12. The receptacle of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the plurality of chambers comprises a solid support for immobilizing an analyte in a sample contained in the receptacle. 13. The receptacle of claim 12 , wherein the solid support comprises a magnetically-responsive particle or bead. 14. The receptacle of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the chambers is a detection chamber configured to enable detection of a characteristic of a sample, at least a portion of the detection chamber being constructed of optically transparent materials, thereby permitting the contents of the detection chamber to be interrogated by an optical sensor. 15. The receptacle of claim 14 , wherein the detection chamber contains one or more probes immobilized on an interior surface of the detection chamber, each of the probes being capable of forming a detectable probe:target complex with a target nucleic acid. 16. The receptacle of claim 1 , comprising: a first dried reagent contained in one of the plurality of chambers; and a first reconstitution reagent contained in one of the plurality of chambers that is connected to the chamber containing the dried reagent. 17. The receptacle of claim 16 , wherein the first dried reagent is a lyophilized reagent. 18. The receptacle of claim 16 , further comprising: a second dried reagent contained in one of the plurality of chambers, and a second reconstitution reagent contained in one of the plurality of chambers that is connected to the chamber containing the second dried reagent, wherein the first and second dried reagents include an amplification reagent and an enzyme reagent, the first and second dried reagents being useful for performing a nucleic acid-based amplification reaction. 19. The receptacle of claim 18 , wherein at least one of the amplification and enzyme reagents comprises one or more probes, each of the probes being capable of forming a detectable probe:target complex with a product of the nucleic acid-based amplification reaction. 20. The receptacle of claim 1 , wherein the receptacle is held within a sealed container. 21. The receptacle of claim 20 , wherein the container further holds a desiccant. 22. The receptacle of claim 1 , wherein the inlet port tube comprises a Luer connection. 23. The receptacle of claim 8 , wherein each of the opposed members comprises a flexible sheet.
