Surgical retractors and methods thereof for retracting body tissue in a therapeutic procedure. The surgical retractor may include retractor blades have openings or channels configured to receive bone pins while maintaining accessibility and visibility of the operative window.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of retracting tissue with a surgical retractor system, the method comprising: inserting a retractor including a first blade and a second blade in a cephalad-caudal direction through an anterior to psoas approach, the first and second blades operably attached to first and second blade arms, respectively, of the retractor, wherein the retractor is angled to a position between a direct lateral and a direct anterior approach; inserting a first bone pin through a first opening in the first blade and into a first vertebrae; inserting a second bone pin through a second opening in the second blade and into a second vertebrae; and operating the retractor such that the first and second blades move in the cephalad-caudal direction, and wherein the retractor further includes a third blade operably connected to a third blade arm of the retractor, and the third blade is oriented fully facing anterior in the anterior to psoas approach. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first, second, and third blades are attached to the retractor and then inserted simultaneously through the anterior to psoas approach. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second blades are attached initially and inserted through the anterior to psoas approach, then the third blade is subsequently inserted and attached to the retractor. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the retractor further includes a frame portion, and wherein the first blade arm, the second blade arm, and the third blade arms are operably attached to the frame portion. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the third blade moves in an anterior direction. 6. The method of claim 4 , wherein each of the first blade, second blade, and third blade can be translated and angulated independently from one another. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first opening is a partial channel in fluid communication with an interior of the first blade. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the partial channel extends along an entire length of the first blade. 9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the partial channel has a semi-circular cross-section. 10. The method of claim 7 , further comprising positioning an insert along a length of the partial channel, the insert configured to receive a portion of the first bone pin. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein an entry to the first opening in the first blade is tapered around a periphery of the entry. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the first opening is threaded and engages a threaded portion on the first bone pin. 13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first blade has an inner wall, an opposite outer wall and a protrusion formed along the outer wall of the first blade, wherein the protrusion extends continuously along a length of the outer wall of the first blade. 14. A method of retracting tissue with a surgical retractor system, the method comprising: inserting a retractor having a first blade, a second blade, and a third blade, the first blade and the second blade being oriented and movable in a cephalad-caudal direction through an anterior to psoas approach, the third blade being oriented and movable in an anterior-posterior direction, the first, second, and third blades operably attached to first, second, and third blade arms, respectively, of the retractor, the first blade having an inner wall, an opposite outer wall and a protrusion formed along the outer wall of the first blade, wherein the protrusion extends continuously along a length of the outer wall of the first blade, wherein the retractor is angled to a position between a direct lateral and a direct anterior approach; inserting a first bone pin through a first opening in the first blade and into a first vertebrae, the first bone pin having a head portion and a distal tip portion, and wherein the first bone pin is inserted into the first opening such that the head portion is disposed proximate the first end of the first blade and the distal tip portion traverses beyond a distal portion of the first blade; inserting a second bone pin through a second opening in the second blade and into a second vertebrae; and operating the retractor such that the first and second blades move in the cephalad-caudal direction and the third blade moves in the anterior-posterior direction. 15. The method of claim 14 , wherein a first blade arm longitudinal axis, a second blade arm longitudinal axis, and a third blade arm longitudinal axis are generally parallel. 16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the third blade is oriented fully facing anterior in the anterior to psoas approach. 17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first, second, and third blades are attached to the retractor and then inserted simultaneously through the anterior to psoas approach. 18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first and second blades are attached initially and inserted through the anterior to psoas approach, then the third blade is subsequently inserted and attached to the retractor. 19. The method of claim 14 , wherein each of the first blade, second blade, and third blade can be translated and angulated independently from one another.
