A route examination system includes a thermographic camera configured to be logically or mechanically coupled with a vehicle that travels along a route. The thermographic camera is also configured to sense infrared radiation emitted or reflected from the route and to generate a sensed thermal signature representative of the infrared radiation that is sensed. The system also includes a computer readable memory device configured to store a designated thermal signature representative of infrared radiation emitted from a segment of the route that is not damaged. The system also includes an analysis processor configured to determine a condition of a first portion of the route relative to other portions of the route at least in part by comparing the sensed thermal signature and the designated thermal signature.

What is claimed is: 1. A method comprising: sensing radiation emitted or reflected from a first route from onboard a vehicle traveling along the first route; changing a stored radiation signature, the stored radiation signature being a combination of previously sensed radiation data sets associated with a segment of the first route, wherein the stored radiation signature is changed by modifying at least one previously sensed radiation data set; comparing the radiation with the stored radiation signature based on one or more characteristics of one or more of the first route or an environment of the first route, one or more first differences between the radiation and the stored radiation signature indicating a rate at which damage to the first route is changing; comparing the radiation with a baseline signature to determine one or more second differences between the radiation and the baseline signature, the one or more second differences between the radiation and the baseline signature indicating an amount of damage to the first route; and changing movement of the vehicle based on one or more first differences between the radiation and the stored radiation signature and the one or more second differences between the radiation and the baseline signature. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one previously sensed radiation data set that is modified is identified based on a condition of the at least one previously sensed radiation data set that is different than conditions of other previously sensed radiation data sets of the combination of previously sensed radiation data sets. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the radiation that is sensed is light emitted or reflected from the first route. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the stored radiation signature is formed from the previously sensed radiation data sets associated with previously sensed radiation that was emitted or reflected from the first route. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the stored radiation signature is a thermal signature of infrared radiation emitted by or reflected from the segment of the first route. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: determining that the segment of the first route is damaged outside of a predetermined threshold based on one or more of the one or more first differences between the radiation and the stored radiation signature, the one or more second differences between the radiation and the baseline signature, or external or contextual information. 7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the external or contextual information includes one or more of an ambient temperature, a location of the vehicle, or a known marker along the first route. 8. A system comprising: a sensor configured to sense radiation emitted or reflected from a first route from onboard a vehicle traveling along the first route; and one or more processors configured to change a stored radiation signature, the stored radiation signature being a combination of previously sensed radiation data sets associated with a segment of the first route, wherein the stored radiation signature is changed by modifying at least one previously sensed radiation data set, wherein the one or more processors are configured to compare the radiation with the stored radiation signature based on one or more characteristics of one or more of the first route or an environment of the first route, wherein the one or more processors are configured to compare the radiation with a baseline signature, and wherein the one or more processors are configured to direct a change in movement of the vehicle based on one or more first differences between the radiation and the stored radiation signature and one or more second differences between the radiation and the baseline signature. 9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one previously sensed radiation data set that is modified is identified based on a condition of the at least one previously sensed radiation data set that is different than conditions of other previously sensed radiation data sets of the combination of previously sensed radiation data sets. 10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the sensor is configured to sense the radiation as light emitted or reflected from the first route. 11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the stored radiation signature is formed from the previously sensed radiation data sets associated with previously sensed radiation that was emitted or reflected from the segment of the first route. 12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the stored radiation signature is a thermal signature of infrared radiation emitted by or reflected from the segment of the first route. 13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to determine that the segment of the first route is damaged outside of a predetermined damage threshold based on one or more of the one or more first differences between the radiation and the stored radiation signature, the one or more second differences between the radiation and the baseline signature, or external or contextual information. 14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the external or contextual information includes one or more of an ambient temperature, a location of the vehicle, or a known marker along the first route. 15. A method comprising: sensing radiation emitted or reflected from a route from onboard a vehicle traveling along the route; determining one or more characteristics of a portion of the route along which the vehicle travels; receiving a stored radiation signature that is a combination of previously sensed radiation data sets associated with a segment of the route; changing the stored radiation signature by modifying at least one previously sensed radiation data set, wherein the at least one previously sensed radiation data set that is modified is identified based on a condition of the at least one previously sensed radiation data set that is different than conditions of other previously sensed radiation data sets of the combination of previously sensed radiation data sets; comparing the radiation with the stored radiation signature to determine one or more first differences between the radiation and the stored radiation signature, the one or more first differences between the radiation and the stored radiation signature indicating a rate at which damage to the route is changing: comparing the radiation with a healthy signature to determine one or more second differences between the radiation and the healthy signature, the one or more second differences between the radiation and the healthy signature indicating a level of damage of the route; and changing movement of the vehicle based on the one or more first differences between the radiation and the stored radiation signature and the one or more second differences between the radiation and the healthy signature. 16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the radiation that is sensed is light emitted or reflected from the route. 17.
