Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A patient support apparatus for supporting a patient comprising a support frame and a support deck coupled to the support frame. The support deck has a deck section arranged to articulate relative to said support frame between a first position and a second position. An actuator is interposed in force-translating relation between the support frame and the deck section to articulate the deck section. The actuator comprises a biasing device configured to store mechanical energy and having an interface. The actuator further comprises a torque multiplier coupled to the deck section and engaged with the interface to translate mechanical energy stored in the biasing device into force acting on the deck section to urge the deck section toward the first position.

What is claimed is: 1. A patient support apparatus for supporting a patient, said patient support apparatus comprising: a support frame defining a longitudinal axis; a support deck coupled to said support frame and having a deck section arranged to articulate relative to said support frame between a first position wherein said deck section is upright and at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis and a second position wherein said deck section is lowered and substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis; an actuator interposed in force-translating relation between said support frame and said deck section, said actuator comprising; a biasing device configured to store mechanical energy and having an interface, and a torque multiplier coupled to said deck section and engaged with said interface to translate potential energy stored in said biasing device into kinetic energy by the use of an articulation force configured to effect active movement of said deck section urging said deck section from said second position toward said first position. 2. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said actuator is configured such that mechanical energy is stored in said biasing device in response to articulation of said deck section toward said second position, and such that mechanical energy stored in said biasing device is translated into force acting toward said deck section to urge said deck section toward said first position. 3. The patient support apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein said interface comprises a pinion gear; and wherein said torque multiplier comprises a drive gear disposed in rotational communication with said pinion gear. 4. The patient support apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein said drive gear has a drive gear size, said pinion gear has a pinion gear size, and a ratio of said drive gear size to said pinion gear size is greater than 1:1. 5. The patient support apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein said torque multiplier further comprises a link to transmit force between said drive gear and said deck section, said link having a first link end and a second link end with said first link end rotatably coupled to said deck section and with said second link end rotatably coupled to said drive gear. 6. The patient support apparatus according to claim 3 , further comprising a latch mechanism coupled to said actuator and arranged for selective engagement with said torque multiplier to restrict articulation of said deck section. 7. The patient support apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein said drive gear comprises gear teeth, and wherein said latch mechanism comprises a pawl selectively engageable with said gear teeth of said drive gear to prevent rotation of said drive gear. 8. The patient support apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein said interface comprises a sun gear; and wherein said torque multiplier comprises a ring gear and planet gears, wherein said planet gears are arranged between and engaged with said ring gear and said sun gear such that said sun gear, said planet gears, and said ring gear define a planetary gearset to translate mechanical energy stored in said biasing device into force acting on said deck section to urge said deck section toward said first position. 9. The patient support apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein said torque multiplier further comprises a link to transmit force between said planetary gearset and said deck section, said link having a first link end and a second link end with said first link end rotatably coupled to said deck section and with said second link end rotatably coupled to said planetary gearset. 10. The patient support apparatus according to claim 8 , further comprising a latch mechanism coupled to said actuator and arranged for selective engagement with said torque multiplier to restrict articulation of said deck section. 11. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said biasing device further comprises a resiliently flexible biasing element coupled to said interface. 12. The patient support apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein said actuator further comprises a housing coupled to said support frame with said housing rotatably supporting said torque multiplier. 13. The patient support apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein said biasing element of said biasing device comprises a torsion spring having a first spring end and a second spring end with said first spring end coupled to said housing and with said second spring end coupled to said interface. 14. The patient support apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said deck section is arranged for articulation between said first position and said second position about an articulation axis. 15. The patient support apparatus according to claim 14 , wherein said deck section comprises a deck coupler rotatably fixed to said support frame and supporting said deck section for rotation about said articulation axis. 16. The patient support apparatus according to claim 14 , wherein said deck section is arranged to pivot about said articulation axis through an arc of at least 30 degrees between said first position and said second position. 17. The patient support apparatus according to claim 14 , wherein said torque multiplier further comprises a link to transmit force between said biasing device and said deck section, said link having a first link end and a second link end with said first link end rotatably coupled to said deck section and with said second link end operably coupled to said interface such that said first link end is spaced from said second link end. 18. A patient support apparatus for supporting a patient, said patient support apparatus comprising: a support frame defining a longitudinal axis; a support deck coupled to said support frame and having a deck section arranged to articulate relative to said support frame between a first position wherein said deck section is upright and at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis and a second position wherein said deck section is lowered and substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis; an actuator interposed in force-translating relation between said support frame and said deck section, said actuator comprising; a biasing device configured to store potential energy and having an interface to translate potential energy stored in said biasing device into kinetic energy by the use of an articulation force acting on said deck section to effect active movement urging to urge said deck section from said second position toward said first position. 19. The patient support apparatus according to claim 18 , wherein said biasing device comprises a spring having a first spring end and a second spring end, and said interface comprises a spring retainer, with said first spring end being coupled to said support frame and said second spring end being coupled to said interface. 20. The patient support apparatus according to claim 18 , wherein said actuator further comprises a damper coupled to said biasing device and configured to retard translation of mechanical energy stored in said biasing device to said deck section as said deck section articulates between said first position and said second position.
