A bipolar forceps includes a mechanical forceps including first and second shafts each having a jaw member extending from a distal end thereof and a handle disposed at a proximal end thereof for effecting movement of the jaw members relative to one another about a pivot. A disposable housing is configured to releasably couple to at least one of the shafts and an electrode assembly is configured to releasably couple to the disposable housing. The electrode assembly includes electrodes releasably coupleable to the jaw members. At least one of the electrodes includes a knife channel configured to receive a knife blade therethrough to cut tissue grasped between the jaw members. An actuation mechanism is configured to selectively advance the knife blade through the knife channel to cut tissue.

What is claimed is: 1. A surgical forceps, comprising: first and second shafts each having a jaw member disposed at a distal portion thereof, the first and second shafts configured to rotate about a pivot between a spaced apart configuration and an approximated configuration to move the jaw members relative to each other; a removable housing coupled to the first shaft, the removable housing configured to be removed from and recoupled to the first shaft; a knife configured to cut tissue disposed between the jaw members; and an actuation mechanism coupled to the knife and configured to move through a longitudinal slot defined through the first shaft within the removable housing to actuate the knife to cut the tissue disposed between the jaw members. 2. The surgical forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the longitudinal slot is defined by a bifurcated portion of the first shaft. 3. The surgical forceps according to claim 1 , further comprising a knife lockout mechanism disposed within the removable housing and configured to operably engage the actuation mechanism when the shafts are in the spaced apart configuration, thereby preventing movement of the actuation mechanism through the longitudinal slot defined through the first shaft and actuation of the knife, wherein rotation of the first and second shafts to the approximated configuration causes the second shaft to contact the knife lockout mechanism and move the knife lockout mechanism out of operable engagement with the actuation mechanism, thereby permitting movement of the actuation mechanism through the longitudinal slot defined through the first shaft and actuation of the knife. 4. The surgical forceps according to claim 1 , further comprising a knife guide disposed within the removable housing when the removable housing is coupled or recoupled to the first shaft, the knife guide including opposing sidewalls defining a longitudinal slot therebetween that receives the knife therein. 5. The surgical forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the removable housing includes a first housing half that couples to a second housing half to encompass the first shaft within the removable housing, the first and second housing halves configured to decouple from each other to facilitate removal of the removable housing from the first shaft. 6. A surgical forceps, comprising: first and second shafts each having a jaw member disposed at a distal portion thereof, the first and second shafts configured to rotate about a pivot to move the jaw members relative to each other; a housing coupled to the first shaft; a knife configured to cut tissue disposed between the jaw members; and an actuation mechanism coupled to the knife and configured to move through a longitudinal slot defined through the first shaft within the housing to actuate the knife to cut the tissue disposed between the jaw members. 7. The surgical forceps according to claim 6 , wherein the housing is configured to be removed from and recoupled to the first shaft. 8. The surgical forceps according to claim 7 , wherein the housing includes a first housing half removably coupleable to a second housing half, the first and second housing halves configured to be coupled to each other to encompass the first shaft within the housing and to decouple from each other to facilitate removal of the housing from the first shaft. 9. An electrosurgical forceps, comprising: first and second shafts each having a jaw member disposed at a distal portion thereof, the first and second shafts configured to rotate about a pivot between a spaced apart configuration and an approximated configuration to move the jaw members relative to each other; a removable housing coupled to the first shaft, the removable housing configured to be removed from and recoupled to the first shaft; a first electrode coupled to the jaw member of the first shaft; a second electrode coupled to the jaw member of the second shaft; a knife configured to cut tissue disposed between the first and second electrodes; and a trigger extending from the removable housing and rotatable to move a knife actuation mechanism coupled to the knife through a longitudinal slot defined through the first shaft within the removable housing. 10. The electrosurgical forceps according to claim 9 , further comprising a knife lockout mechanism disposed within the removable housing and configured to operably engage the trigger when the shafts are in the spaced apart configuration, thereby preventing rotation of the trigger and actuation of the knife, wherein rotation of the first and second shafts to the approximated configuration causes the second shaft to contact the knife lockout mechanism and move the knife lockout mechanism out of operable engagement with the trigger, thereby permitting rotation of the trigger and actuation of the knife. 11. The electrosurgical forceps according to claim 9 , further comprising an actuation button disposed on the removable housing and configured to actuate a switch disposed within the removable housing to control delivery of electrosurgical energy to the first and second electrodes. 12. The electrosurgical forceps according to claim 9 , wherein the longitudinal slot is defined by a bifurcated portion of the first shaft. 13. The electrosurgical forceps according to claim 9 , wherein the actuation mechanism includes a biasing member configured to bias the trigger to an unactuated position. 14. The electrosurgical forceps according to claim 9 , further comprising a knife guide disposed within the removable housing when the removable housing is coupled or recoupled to the first shaft, the knife guide including opposing sidewalls defining a longitudinal slot therebetween that receives the knife therein. 15. The electrosurgical forceps according to claim 9 , wherein the removable housing includes a first housing half that couples to a second housing half to encompass the first shaft within the removable housing, the first and second housing halves configured to decouple from each other to facilitate removal of the removable housing from the first shaft.
