Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An apparatus and method to conduct financial and other transactions using a wireless computing device. The wireless device includes an input display part, one or more processors, and at least one memory device. The memory device has stored therein a wallet application for completing transactions based on wireless data communications between the computing device and an external electronic device. The memory device further stores at least one electronic credential. The wireless device permits transmission, via a near-field communication (NFC) module, of at least one electronic credential to an NFC reader of the external electronic device based on comparing a biometric characteristic of a user, detected by a biometric characteristic reader, with stored biometric information.

What is claimed is: 1. A portable computing device comprising: a display screen having a user input interface; at least one processor configured to execute a plurality of applications, the plurality of applications including a wallet application to perform transactions based on wireless data communications between the portable computing device and at least one external electronic device and loaded with a plurality of extensions; at least one memory configured to: store biometric information of a user, and store at least one electronic credential, the at least one electronic credential to authorize at least one transaction against an external server when the at least one electronic credential is transmitted to the at least one external electronic device; a network transceiver configured to communicate with a cellular communications network; a short-range radio frequency (RF) transceiver coupled to an antenna, the short-range RF transceiver configured to communicate using a predetermined communications protocol including wireless transmission or radio frequency identification (RFID) communication; a near-field communication (NFC) device coupled to an NFC antenna, the NFC device configured to transmit the at least one electronic credential to an NFC reader of at least one external electronic device; and a biometric characteristic reader configured to read a biometric characteristic of the user, wherein the at least one processor i s further configured to: establish a connection to the NFC reader via the antenna of the short-range RF transceiver by exchanging encryption keys, receive a credential-specific reader key from the NFC reader via the antenna of the short-range RF transceiver, receive, from the biometric characteristic reader, information associated with the biometric characteristic of the user, control at least one of the network transceiver to connect, to the external server, select an electronic credential based on the reader key among the at least one electronic credential by using the reader key as a search string, execute an extension, among the plurality of extensions, corresponding to an extension identifier included in the selected electronic credential, and in a case that communication is established between the NFC antenna of the portable computing device and an NFC antenna of the NFC reader, control, using the extension, the NFC device to transmit the selected electronic credential based on the reader key to the at least one external electronic device to authorize at least one transaction against the external server. 2. The portable computing device of claim 1 , wherein the biometric characteristic is a fingerprint. 3. The portable computing device of claim 1 , wherein the biometric characteristic reader is configured to capture the biometric characteristic from the user to store the biometric characteristic as the stored biometric information. 4. The portable computing device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one memory includes a secure memory configured to store the at least one electronic credential, the secure memory being tamper-resistant memory. 5. The portable computing device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one electronic credential further comprises data associated with at least one of a credit card account, a debit card account, a stored value card account, an automated teller machine card account, a bank account, a payment token card account, a membership card account, a loyalty card account, an access card account, an identification card account, a driver's license, an e-ticket, a pass, a coupon, or a certificate. 6. The portable computing device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one electronic credential comprises an account identifier including at least one payment token account number of a payment token account. 7. The portable computing device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one electronic credential comprises an account identifier including at least one payment token account number of a payment token account that is mapped to a linked payment account, including at least one of a credit account, a debit account, and a stored value account within a token management system. 8. The portable computing device of claim 1 , wherein the portable computing device is configured to transmit to the external electronic device via the NFC device the at least one electronic credential in response to determining that a read biometric characteristic matches biometric characteristic stored in the at least one memory and a determination that the user is authorized to perform the at least one transaction using the portable computing device. 9. A method comprising: storing biometric information of a user in at least one memory of a portable computing device; establishing a connection to a near field communication (NFC) reader using a short-range radio frequency (RF) transceiver of a portable computing device; receiving a reader key from the NFC reader using the short-range RF transceiver configured to communicate using a wireless transmission protocol or a radio frequency identifier (RFID) communication; reading, by a biometric characteristic reader included in the portable computing device, a biometric characteristic of the user; comparing, locally at the portable computing device, the biometric characteristic of the user with the biometric information of the user stored in the at least one memory to access at least one electronic credential stored in the at least one memory; selecting an electronic credential based on the reader key among the at least one electronic credential by using the reader key as a search string based on a comparison between the biometric characteristic of the user and the biometric information of the user; executing, by at least one processor of the portable computing device, an extension corresponding to an extension identifier included in the selected electronic credential among a plurality of extensions loaded to a wallet application of the portable computing device; and transmitting, using the extension, the selected electronic credential based on the reader key to the external electronic device using an NFC device of the portable computing device to authorize at least one transaction against the external server, in a case that communication is established between an NFC antenna of the portable computing device and an NFC antenna of the NFC reader. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the biometric characteristic is a fingerprint. 11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising: capturing, by the biometric characteristic reader, the biometric characteristic from the user; and storing the biometric characteristic as the stored biometric information. 12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one electronic credential is stored in a secure and tamper-resistant memory of the portable computing device. 13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one electronic credential further comprises data associated with at least one of a credit card account, a debit card account, a stored value card account, an automated teller machine card account, a bank account, a payment token card account, a membership card account, a loyalty card account, an access card account, an identification card account, a driver's license, an e-ticket, a pass, a coupon, or a certificate. 14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one electronic credential comprises account identifier including at least one payment token account number of a payment token account, and wherein the payment token account is mapped to a linked payment account, including at least one of a credit account, a
