A method of surgical dissection of tissue with a dissector comprising: an elongate shaft comprising a proximal portion and a distal portion, wherein the distal portion comprises a plurality of segments that articulate with respect to one another and the plurality of segments includes a distal segment having a distal end; and a handle attached to the proximal portion of the shaft, wherein the handle comprises controls for articulating the plurality of segments of the distal portion of the shaft with respect to one another, comprising the steps of: positioning the distal end of the dissector in a body; advancing the distal end through the body to dissect tissue; and simultaneously articulating the plurality of segments with respect to one another. A method of surgical dissection of tissue and guiding a second device to a desired physiological location with a first device.

We claim: 1. A surgical dissector comprising: an elongate shaft including a proximal portion and a distal portion, wherein the distal portion comprises a plurality of hingedly interconnected segments that articulate with respect to one another and the plurality of segments includes a distal segment having a distal end; and a handle attached to the proximal portion of the shaft, wherein the handle comprises controls for articulating the plurality of segments of the distal portion of the shaft with respect to one another; wherein each of the plurality of segments are hingedly interconnected with a respective pin that extends laterally through adjacent segments; and a push/pull rod interconnected to a plurality of connected pistons serially and hingedly interconnected adjacent the plurality of segments; wherein the entirety of the push/pull rod is positioned proximal the plurality of pistons and the plurality of pistons are positioned distal to the push/pull rod. 2. The surgical dissector of claim 1 , wherein the distal end includes an illumination source. 3. The surgical dissector of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of pistons are serially and hingedly interconnected with a plurality of links. 4. The surgical dissector of claim 3 , wherein each link includes two holes in which respective pins are received. 5. The surgical dissector of claim 1 , wherein, in a straight configuration, the plurality of segments and the plurality of pistons are parallel and adjacent with respect to each other. 6. The surgical dissector of claim 1 , wherein a proximal end of the push/pull rod is pivotally connected to the distal segment. 7. The surgical dissector of claim 1 , further comprising a flexible guide wire tube extending lengthwise along the elongate shaft. 8. The surgical dissector of claim 7 , wherein the guide wire tube extends adjacent an illumination source. 9. The surgical dissector of claim 1 , further comprising a handle that controls movement of the push/pull rod. 10. The surgical dissector of claim 9 , further comprising a rack extending from the push/pull rod, the rack including a set of teeth. 11. The surgical dissector of claim 10 , wherein the handle includes a set of teeth that engage the set of teeth of the rack. 12. The surgical dissector of claim 11 , further comprising a jam bar connected to the rack. 13. The surgical dissector of claim 12 , further comprising a guide wire tube supporting a jam plate having an aperture aligned with the jam bar. 14. The surgical dissector of claim 1 , further comprising an articulation lock mechanism for maintaining the distal portion of shaft in a desired articulated configuration.
