Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A golf club including at least one component with a construction that includes a composite material with color/metallic coated fibers. In some embodiments, at least a portion of an outer surface of the golf club head is defined by a layered structure including color/metallic coated fibers. The layered structure may include a non-woven composite layer comprising a plurality of unidirectional fiber composite plies and woven composite layer disposed over the non-woven fiber composite layer and including color/metallic coated fibers. In some embodiments, an optically transparent coating may be disposed over the woven composite layer. In some embodiments, the color/metallic coated fibers may be electroplated fibers.

What is claimed is: 1. A golf club, comprising: a grip; a golf club shaft; and a golf club head comprising a crown insert, wherein at least a portion of an outer surface of the crown insert is defined by a layered structure comprising: an inner composite layer; and a woven outer composite layer disposed over the inner composite layer and comprising woven fibers, the woven fibers comprising a core fiber and a colored metallic coating layer coated on the core fiber, wherein the woven outer composite layer comprises a fiber areal weight in a range of 50 grams per meter squared to 650 grams per meter squared, and wherein a diameter of the core fiber is in a range of 5 microns to 15 microns. 2. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the layered structure further comprises an optically transparent coating disposed over the woven outer composite layer, the optically transparent coating defining the at least a portion of the outer surface of the crown insert. 3. The golf club of claim 2 , wherein the layered structure further comprises a transparent polymeric layer disposed between the woven outer composite layer and the optically transparent layer. 4. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the colored metallic coating layer comprises a color selected from the group consisting of: red, crimson, maroon, magenta, pink, orange, yellow, gold, chartreuse, green, blue, navy, aqua, teal, cerulean, indigo, violet, purple, brown, black, grey, white, beige, taupe, metallic red, metallic pink, metallic orange, metallic yellow, metallic gold, metallic green, metallic blue, metallic teal, metallic purple, metallic brown, metallic black, or metallic white. 5. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the colored metallic coating layer is a vapor-deposited coating layer. 6. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the colored metallic coating layer is an electroplated coating layer. 7. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the colored metallic coating layer is an anodized coating layer. 8. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the colored metallic coating layer is coated around the entire outer surface of the core fiber. 9. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the colored metallic coating layer comprises a thickness equal to 1% to 5% of the diameter of the core fiber. 10. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the colored metallic coating layer comprises a thickness in a range of 0.02 microns to 1 micron. 11. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the colored metallic coating layer comprises a metal selected from the group consisting of: aluminum, chromium, or copper. 12. The golf club of claim 1 , further comprising a sole insert, wherein at least a portion of an outer surface of the sole insert is defined by a second layered structure comprising: a second inner composite layer; and a second woven outer composite layer disposed over the second inner composite layer and comprising woven fibers, the woven fibers of the second woven outer composite layer comprising a core fiber and a colored metallic coating layer coated on the core fiber. 13. The golf club of claim 1 , further comprising a face insert, wherein at least a portion of an outer surface of the face insert is defined by a second layered structure comprising: a second inner composite layer; and a second woven outer composite layer disposed over the second inner composite layer and comprising woven fibers, the woven fibers of the second woven outer composite layer comprising a core fiber and a colored metallic coating layer coated on the core fiber. 14. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the golf club head comprises a face opening and a composite face insert received in the face opening. 15. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the metallic color coated woven fibers are arranged in fiber tows. 16. The golf club of claim 15 , wherein the fiber tows are present at a weight percent in a range of 5 wt % to 95 wt % based on a total weight of fibers in the woven outer composite layer. 17. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the woven outer composite layer comprises a triaxial balance weave pattern. 18. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the woven outer composite layer comprises a normalized damping ratio in the range of 2 to 200 normalized to a titanium alloy. 19. The golf club of claim 1 , further comprising a moveable weight configured to be moved from a first position to a second position in the golf club head. 20. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the golf club head comprises a hosel portion configured to receive a sleeve attached to the golf club shaft, the sleeve being capable of being positioned to adjust the loft, lie, or face angle of the golf club head. 21. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the metallic color coated woven fibers of the woven outer composite layer are embedded in a thermoplastic matrix material. 22. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the woven fibers further comprise a plurality of colored polymeric fibers. 23. A golf club, comprising: a grip; a golf club shaft; and a golf club head comprising a crown insert, wherein at least a portion of an outer surface of the crown insert is defined by a layered structure comprising: an inner composite layer; and a woven outer composite layer disposed over the inner composite layer and comprising woven fibers, the woven fibers comprising a core fiber and a colored metallic coating layer coated on the core fiber, wherein the woven outer composite layer comprises a fiber areal weight in a range of 50 grams per meter squared to 650 grams per meter squared, wherein the crown insert covers at least 40% of a crown surface area of the golf club head, and wherein a diameter of the core fiber is in a range of 5 microns to 15 microns. 24.
