A substrate for use in a filter media including, for example, in a hydrocarbon fluid-water separation filter; methods of identifying the substrate; methods of making the substrate; methods of using the substrate; and methods of improving the roll off angle of the substrate. In some embodiments, the substrate includes a hydrophilic group-containing polymer or a hydrophilic group-containing polymer coating.

What is claimed is: 1. A filter media comprising a substrate, wherein the substrate comprises a surface having a roll off angle in a range of 40 degrees to 90 degrees and a contact angle in a range of 90 degrees to 180 degrees for a 50 μL water droplet when the surface is immersed in toluene; wherein the substrate comprises pores having an average diameter of at least 20 μm; and wherein the surface comprises poly(hydroxypropyl methacrylate) (PHPM), poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEM), poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (P2E2O), polyethyleneimine (PEI), quaternized polyethyleneimine, or poly(dopamine), or combinations thereof. 2. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the surface has a roll off angle in a range of 70 degrees to 90 degrees. 3. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the substrate comprises cellulose, polyester, polyamide, polyolefin, glass, or a combination thereof. 4. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the substrate comprises pores having an average diameter in a range of 40 μm to 50 μm. 5. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the substrate is at least 15% porous and up to 99% porous. 6. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the substrate has the ability to retain a roll off angle of at least 80% of an initial roll off angle after being submersed in a hydrocarbon fluid at a temperature of at least 50° C. for at least 1 hour. 7. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the surface comprises poly(hydroxypropyl methacrylate) (PHPM). 8. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the surface comprises poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEM). 9. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the surface comprises poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (P2E2O). 10. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the surface comprises polyethyleneimine (PEI) or quaternized polyethyleneimine, or a combination thereof. 11. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the surface comprises poly(dopamine). 12. A filter element comprising the filter media of claim 1 . 13. The filter element of claim 12 , wherein the filter element is configured to remove water from a hydrocarbon fluid. 14. The filter element of claim 12 , wherein the filter element further comprises a coalescing layer located upstream of the substrate. 15. The filter element of claim 14 , wherein the coalescing layer comprises pores having an average diameter and the average diameter of the pores of the substrate is greater than the average diameter of the pores of the coalescing layer. 16. A filter media comprising a substrate, wherein the substrate comprises a surface having a roll off angle in a range of 40 degrees to 90 degrees and a contact angle in a range of 90 degrees to 180 degrees for a 50 μL water droplet when the surface is immersed in toluene; wherein the substrate comprises pores having an average diameter of at least 20 μm; and wherein the surface comprises poly(hydroxypropyl methacrylate) (PHPM). 17. A filter element comprising the filter media of claim 16 . 18. A filter media comprising a substrate, wherein the substrate comprises a surface having a roll off angle in a range of 40 degrees to 90 degrees and a contact angle in a range of 90 degrees to 180 degrees for a 50 μL water droplet when the surface is immersed in toluene; wherein the substrate comprises pores having an average diameter of at least 20 μm; and wherein the surface comprises polyethyleneimine (PEI) or quaternized polyethyleneimine, or a combination thereof. 19. A filter element comprising the filter media of claim 18 . 20. A filter media comprising a substrate, wherein the substrate comprises a surface having a roll off angle in a range of 40 degrees to 90 degrees and a contact angle in a range of 90 degrees to 180 degrees for a 50 μL water droplet when the surface is immersed in toluene; wherein the substrate comprises pores having an average diameter of at least 20 μm; and wherein the surface is formed by dip coating a polymer solution on the substrate, wherein the polymer solution comprises a polymer comprising poly(hydroxypropyl methacrylate) (PHPM), poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEM), poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (P2E2O), polyethyleneimine (PEI), quaternized polyethyleneimine, or poly(dopamine), or a combination thereof, and wherein the polymer solution comprises up to 5% (w/v) of the polymer, based on the molecular weight of the polymer.
