A multi-mode system and method for imaging a patient's breast with x-rays in one or more of a CT mode, a narrow-angle tomosynthesis mode, a wide angle tomosynthesis mode, and a mammography mode, using essentially the same equipment, on one or more compressions or immobilizations of the breast.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. A multi-mode system for imaging a breast of an upright patient, said system comprising: an immobilization unit including at least one compression member having a respective facing compression surface with which a breast of an upright patient is immobilized, the immobilization unit including the at least one compression member being supported by an axle and being selectively rotatable about a central axis of the axle, the immobilization unit being configured to permit the facing compression surface of the immobilization unit to be moved towards another compression surface to immobilize the breast; a data acquisition unit configured to selectively operate said system in any of a plurality of imaging modes, including: a computerized tomography (CT) mode in which a plurality of CT x-ray projection images CTp of the breast taken at different angles to the breast are generated; and a tomosynthesis mode (T) in which a plurality of tomosynthesis x-ray projection images Tp of the breast taken at different angles to the breast are generated; and an image processing unit configured to computer-process the CT x-ray projection images CTp and generate one or more CT reconstructed images CTr representing slices of the breast having selected thicknesses and orientations, and to computer-process the tomosynthesis x-ray projection images Tp and generate tomosynthesis reconstructed breast slice images Tr of at least a portion of the breast. 2. The multi-mode system of claim 1 further comprising: a display unit configured to selectively display one or more of said tomosynthesis x-ray projection images Tp, said tomosynthesis reconstructed breast slice images Tr and said CT reconstructed images CTr. 3. The multi-mode system of claim 2 , wherein the display unit is configured to concurrently display at least one of the CT reconstructed images CTr and at least one of the tomosynthesis x-ray projection images Tp or tomosynthesis reconstructed breast slice images Tr in co-registration such that the selection of an anatomical feature in one of the concurrently displayed images automatically identifies a matching anatomical feature in at least another one of the concurrently displayed images. 4. The multi-mode system of claim 1 , wherein the facing compression surface of each compression member of the breast immobilization unit is concave to engage the breast when immobilizing the breast. 5. The multi-mode system of claim 1 , wherein the data acquisition unit is further configured to selectively operate the system in a mammography mode (M) and generate image data for one or more projection mammograms Mp of the upright patient's breast, the image processing unit is further configured to computer-process at least some of the image data for the one of more projection mammograms Mp and generate one or more display mammogram images Md, and the display unit is further configured to selectively display the display mammogram images Md and CT reconstructed images CTr. 6. The multi-mode system of claim 1 , wherein the data acquisition unit imaging the breast in said tomosynthesis mode (T) selectively operates the system in one of: (a) a narrow angle tomosynthesis mode in which a plurality of tomosynthesis projection images Tpn of the breast taken over a relatively narrow extent of respective different angles of an x-ray source relative to the breast are generated; and (b) a wide angle tomosynthesis mode in which a plurality of tomosynthesis projection images Tpw of the breast taken at a relatively wider extent of respective different angles of the x-ray source relative to the breast are generated, and said r image processing unit selectively reconstructs said tomosynthesis projection images Tpn and Tpw into the tomosynthesis slice images Tr representing respective three-dimensional slices of the imaged breast that have respective thicknesses and orientations. 7. A multi-mode system for imaging a breast of an upright patient, said system comprising: an immobilization unit including at least one compression member having a respective facing compression surface with which a breast of an upright patient is immobilized, the immobilization unit including the at least one compression member being supported by an axle and being selectively rotatable about a central axis of the axle, the immobilization unit being configured to permit the facing compression surface of the immobilization unit to be moved towards another compression surface to immobilize the breast; a data acquisition unit configured to selectively operate said system in any of a plurality of imaging modes, including: a mammography mode (M) generating one or more two-dimensional projection images (Mp) of the immobilized breast, each using a patient dose approximating that for a conventional mammogram; a tomosynthesis mode (T) in which a plurality of tomosynthesis x-ray projection images (Tp) of the patient's breast taken at different angles to the breast are generated; and another mode generating at least one additional image of the patient's breast, other than a two-dimensional projection image Mp generated in the mammography mode and a tomosynthesis x-ray projection image Tp generated in the tomosynthesis mode; and a display unit configured to selectively display concurrently, corresponding to the patient's breast, (i) at least one of the two-dimensional projection image Mp and a tomosynthesis reconstructed breast slice image Tr computer processed from the tomosynthesis x-ray projection images Tp and (ii) the additional breast image. 8. The multi-mode system of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of imaging modes includes a computerized tomography (CT) mode in which a plurality of CT x-ray projection images CTp of the breast taken at different angles to the breast are generated; and the system further comprises an image processing unit configured to computer-process the CT x-ray projection images CTp and generate one or more CT reconstructed images CTr representing slices of the breast having selected thicknesses and orientations. 9. A method of imaging a breast of an upright patient comprising: immobilizing a breast of the upright patient between a first compression surface and a second compression surface; providing an x-ray source on one side of said plates and an x-ray imaging receptor on the other side; selectively imaging the patient's immobilized breast with x-rays in: (a) a tomosynthesis mode T generating a plurality of two-dimensional tomosynthesis x-ray projection images (Tp) of the immobilized breast taken take through moving at least said source through a tomosynthesis angle that is substantially less than said CT angle and generating each of said images Tp for a respective increment of said tomosynthesis angle; and (b) a mammography mode M generating one or more two-dimensional projection images (Mp) of the immobilized breast, each using a patient dose approximating that for a conventional mammogram; imaging the patient's breast in another mode generating an additional image of the patient's breast, other than a two-dimensional projection image Mp and a tomosynthesis x-ray projection image; selectively reconstructing slice tomosynthesis images (Tr) from said tomosynthesis x-ray projection images Tp, in each case for respective three-dimensional slices of the imaged breast, said slices having respective selected thicknesses and orientations; selectively computer-processing said images Tp, Tr and Mp to generate respective display images Tpd, Trd and Md; and displaying concurrently a selected combination of (i) one or more of said Tpd, Trd Md images and (ii) the additional image. 10.
