Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An example apparatus includes a meter to generate first information indicative of a media presentation mode of a media presentation application executed by a wireless communication device during a presentation of the media content received and presented via the wireless communication device, the media content comprising scheduled programming that is broadcasted or multicasted simultaneously to a plurality of other wireless communication devices during a pre-scheduled time; and generate second information indicative of the media content presented via the wireless communication device. A memory is to store the first information in association with the second information in the wireless communication device; and store third information in association with the first and second information. The third information is indicative of at least one of a location of a cell tower used to transmit the media content, an identifier of the cell tower, or an identifier of a wireless network access point.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. An apparatus to control media content presented on a media presentation device, the apparatus comprising: a metering information collector to: detect an activation message received at the media presentation device from a media content provider; enable metering activity by the media presentation device in response to the activation message from the media content provider; and obtain information associated with a user of the media presentation device, the information associated with the user obtained from the media presentation device; and a communication interface to: receive first media content from the media content provider; establish a communication link via a network to the media content provider, the communication link to facilitate sending the information to the media content provider; and cause the media presentation device to, in response to receiving a control command from the media content provider via a return path on the communication link of the network, present second media content corresponding to the information, the return path to facilitate control of the media presentation device by the media content provider. 2. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , wherein the obtained information includes demographic information corresponding to the user. 3. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , wherein the second media content includes a targeted advertisement based on demographic information associated with the obtained information. 4. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , wherein the second media content includes an interest-based targeted advertisement. 5. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , wherein the metering information collector and the communication interface operate on the media presentation device at a media presentation location. 6. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , wherein the media presentation device is a television at a media presentation location. 7. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , wherein the control command includes codes embedded in the first media content. 8. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , wherein the communication interface is to retrieve the second media content from at least one of the media content provider, a media content producer, an advertiser, or another entity communicatively connected via the network. 9. A system to present media content on a media presentation device, the system comprising: means for collecting metering information to: detect an activation message received at the media presentation device from a media content provider; enable metering activity by the media presentation device in response to the activation message from the media content provider; and obtain information associated with a user of the media presentation device, the information associated with the user obtained from the media presentation device; and means for communication to: receive first media content from the media content provider; establish a communication link via a network to the media content provider, the communication link to facilitate sending the information to the media content provider; and cause the media presentation device to, in response to receiving a control command from the media content provider via a return path on the communication link of the network, present second media content corresponding to the information, the return path to facilitate control of the media presentation device by the media content provider. 10. The system as defined in claim 9 , wherein the obtained information includes demographic information corresponding to the user. 11. The system as defined in claim 9 , wherein the second media content includes a targeted advertisement based on demographic information associated with the obtained information. 12. The system as defined in claim 9 , wherein the second media content includes an interest-based targeted advertisement. 13. The system as defined in claim 9 , wherein the communication means and the collecting metering information means operate on the media presentation device at a media presentation location. 14. The system as defined in claim 9 , wherein the media presentation device is a television at a media presentation location. 15. The system as defined in claim 9 , wherein the communication means is to embed codes in the first media content via the control command. 16. The system as defined in claim 9 , wherein the communication means is to retrieve the second media content from at least one of the media content provider, a media content producer, an advertiser, or another entity communicatively connected via the network. 17. An article of manufacture comprising machine readable instructions that, when executed, cause a media presentation device to at least: detect an activation message received at the media presentation device from a media content provider; enable metering activity by the media presentation device in response to the activation message from the media content provider; obtain information associated with a user of a media presentation, the information associated with the user obtained from the media presentation device; receive first media content from the media content provider; establish a communication link via a network to the media content provider, the communication link to facilitate sending the information to the media content provider; and cause the media presentation device to, in response to receiving a control command from the media content provider via a return path on the communication link of the network, present second media content corresponding to the information, the return path to facilitate control of the media presentation device by the media content provider. 18. The article of manufacture as defined in claim 17 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the media presentation device to obtain demographic information corresponding to the user. 19. The article of manufacture as defined in claim 17 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the media presentation device to present a targeted advertisement as the second media content, the targeted advertisement selected based on demographic information associated with the obtained information. 20. The article of manufacture as defined in claim 17 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the media presentation device to present an interest-based targeted advertisement as the second media content. 21. The article of manufacture as defined in claim 17 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the media presentation device to retrieve the second media content from at least one of the media content provider, a media content producer, an advertiser, or another entity communicatively connected via the network.
