Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Aspects described herein generally relate to methods of making a phosphono paraffin comprising forming a reaction mixture by mixing a haloparaffin, a phosphite, and sodium iodide. Methods comprise heating the reaction mixture to form the phosphono paraffin. Aspects described herein further relate to a phosphono paraffin represented by formula (I): wherein each instance of R 1 is independently —H or wherein each instance of R 2 and R 3 is independently linear or branched C 1-20 alkyl, C 1-20 cycloalkyl, or aryl; the number of instances where R 1 is of formula (I) is between about 2 and about 8; and n is an integer between 4 and 22.

What is claimed is: 1. A composition comprising: a component selected from the group consisting of water, a phosphonate, an antioxidant, a mineral oil, a vegetable oil, an ester, a polyalphaolefin, a silicone oil, an alkanol, an alkylated aromatic hydrocarbon, a corrosion inhibitor, and mixture(s) thereof; and a phosphono paraffin represented by formula (I): wherein: each instance of R 1 is independently —H or each instance of R 2 and R 3 is independently C 1-20 alkyl, cycloalkyl of C 20 or less, or aryl; n is an integer of 4 to 22; and the number of instances where R 1 is of formula (I) is 2 to 8. 2. The phosphono paraffin of claim 1 , wherein the number of instances where R 1 is of formula (I) is about 3 to 6. 3. The phosphono paraffin of claim 1 , wherein n is an integer of 10 to 16. 4. The phosphono paraffin of claim 1 , wherein each of R 2 and R 3 are the same and each of R 2 and R 3 are C1-C5 alkyl. 5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein each instance of R 2 and R 3 is independently selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl, hexyl, heptyl, octyl, nonyl, and decyl. 6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein each instance of R 2 and R 3 is independently selected from the group consisting of isopropyl, butyl, and phenyl. 7. The composition of claim 6 , wherein the phosphono paraffin is: 8. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises 20 wt % to 70 wt % of the phosphono paraffin. 9. The composition of claim 8 , wherein the composition comprises 40 wt % to 60 wt % of the phosphono paraffin. 10. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises 20 wt % to 70 wt % of the component. 11. The composition of claim 10 , wherein the composition comprises 40 wt % to 60 wt % of the component. 12. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the component is a phosphonate. 13. The composition of claim 12 , wherein the phosphonate is selected from the group consisting of tetrabutyl propyl bisphosphonate, tributyl phosphate, and mixture(s) thereof. 14. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the component is an ester. 15. The composition of claim 14 , wherein the ester is selected from the group consisting of a phthalate, an adipate, a phosphoric acid ester, a fatty acid ester, and mixture(s) thereof. 16. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the component is an antioxidant. 17. The composition of claim 16 , wherein the antioxidant is selected from the group consisting of a di-tertiary butyl phenyl phosphite, an octylated phenyl-alpha-naphthylamine, an octylated/butylated diphenylamine, a phenolic, a thioether, and mixture(s) thereof. 18. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises a silicone oil comprising a siloxane. 19. The composition of claim 18 , wherein the siloxane is a polysiloxane. 20. The composition of claim 19 , wherein the polysiloxane is represented by the formula: wherein: y is an integer selected from 1 to 40; each of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , and R 4 is independently selected from the group consisting of C 1-10 alkyl, aryl, and C 1-10 alkylaryl; and each instance of R 5 and R 6 is independently selected from the group consisting of C 1-10 alkyl, aryl, and C 1-10 alkylaryl.
