Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A disclosed digital media device operational at user premises to receive media signals from a media source for presentation via endpoint devices such as a television display. The digital media device can include gateway and digital media management functionality and can be referred to as a gateway and digital media device. The device offers application services obtained over a wide area network and a user premises network. The digital media device may form a composite signal from the media signal and application service information, for example, for a composite audio and/or video signal for television type presentation to the user. The digital media device may receive a selection signal based on the presentation, for transmission to the application service provider device or to the media source. The media device also offers a GUI presenting a moveable arrangement of icons for selectively accessing application services.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A digital system comprising: at least one interface configured to receive, via a local wireless network, media; memory locally storing a first media application and a second media application; and one or more processors in communication with the memory and the at least one interface, wherein the one or more processors are configured to execute instructions to provide— a first signal for displaying, via a television display, a first composite image, wherein the first composite image represents: (1) one or more icons for accessing, via the local wireless network, media from at least one media device at a user premises, (2) the first media application for establishing bi-directional communication with a first remote server associated with a first service provider, and (3) the second media application for establishing bi-directional communication with a second remote server associated with a second service provider, a second signal for displaying, via the television display, an image having first user selectable icons representing streamable video media available from and/or obtained from at least one of the first service provider or the second service provider, and a third signal, in response to a selection of one of the first user selectable icons, for displaying via the television display a second composite image having media associated with the selected one of the first user selectable icons and one or more second user selectable icons representing streamable video media available from and/or obtained from the at least one of the first service provider or second service provider. 2. The digital system of claim 1 , wherein the media associated with the selected one of the first user selectable icons is streamed video. 3. The digital system of claim 1 , wherein the media associated with the selected one of the first user selectable icons is a primary image of the second composite image. 4. The digital system of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the first user selectable icons are dynamically added or removed. 5. The digital system of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the first user selectable icons are dynamically added or removed based on at least one subscription. 6. The digital system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first user selectable icons is the same as at least one of the second user selectable icons. 7. The digital system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one interface is configured to receive one or more media signals from one or more analog video sources and/or one or more digital video sources. 8. The digital system of claim 1 , wherein the digital system is configured to cause the television display to dynamically move the first user selectable icons based on user input, and the local networking device is a gateway device. 9. The digital system of claim 1 , wherein the digital system is configured to provide peer-to-peer communication. 10. The digital system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one interface includes one or more USB interfaces, local area network interfaces, wireless network interfaces, HDMI interfaces, component video interfaces, composite video interfaces, S-video interfaces, digital audio interfaces, or combination thereof. 11. A method, comprising: locally storing one or more media applications on a media device at a premises, wherein the one or more media applications include at least a first media application for establishing bi-directional communication with a first remote server associated with a first service provider and a second media application for establishing bi-directional communication with a second remote server associated with media from a second service provider; sending at least one first signal for displaying, via the television display, a first composite image, wherein the first composite image represents (1) one or more icons for accessing media from at least one media device at a user premises, (2) the first media application, and (3) the second media application, and sending at least one second signal for displaying, via the television display at the premises, an image having first user selectable icons representing streamable video media available from and/or obtained from at least one of the first service provider or second service provider, sending at least one third signal, in response to a selection of one of the first user selectable icons, for displaying via the television display a second composite image having media associated with the selected one of the user selectable icons and one or more second user selectable icons representing streamable video media available from and/or obtained from the at least one of the first service provider or second service provider. 12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising automatically causing media to be streamed to the television display based on selection of one of the second user selectable icons. 13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising streaming media associated with the selected one of the user selectable icons to the television display. 14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising in response to user interaction with the second composite image, streaming media from a cable television signal source, a satellite television signal source, a television broadcast signal source, an audio signal source, a video playback device, a game console, or any combination thereof. 15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising concurrently streaming video and displaying at least a portion of the second composite image. 16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the streamable video media available from the first service provider is routed from the first remote server to the media device, and the streamable video media available from the second service provider is routed from the second remote server, independent from the first remote server, to the media device. 17. The method of claim 11 , further comprising automatically receiving updates for the first media application and/or the second media application. 18. The method of claim 11 , further comprising automatically checking for updates from at least the first service provider and/or the second service provider. 19. The method of claim 13 , further comprising receiving notifications of software updates from the first service provider for the first media application and the second service provider for the second media application. 20. The method of claim 13 , further comprising automatically updating the first media application based on instructions from the first service provider and/or the second media application based on instructions from the second service provider. 21. The digital system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to execute instructions to automatically cause authentication for subscription-based streaming via the first media application. 22. The digital system of claim 21 , further comprising establishing a secure channel with the first remote server by using public-key cryptography. 23. The digital system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to execute instructions to communicate with a wireless remote control used to select the first user selectable icons and the second user selectable icons, wherein the wireless remote control is programmed to support a library of codes or commands for controlling the television display and media streaming device. 24. The digital system of cla
