Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for multi-entity management of an ID node in a wireless node network. The ID node associates with a first entity user access device, which operates as a master node and communicates directly with a server over a first communication path. The first device separately communicates with the ID node over a second communication path, but the ID node is unable to directly communicate with the server. The ID node provides the first device with access to data collected by the ID node if an initial privilege authorizes it. After associating with a shipping entity master node, the ID node provides the shipping entity master node with the data collected based on a transferred privilege from the server. And then after associating with a second entity user access device, the ID node provides access to this second device if authorized by a destination privilege from the server.

What is claimed: 1. A method for multi-entity management of an ID node deployed with an item to be shipped in a wireless node network, comprising: associating the ID node with a first entity user access device by generating first association data on the ID node, the first association data reflecting a logical pairing of the ID node and the first entity user access device, the first entity user access device operating as a master node in the network and is operative to communicate directly with a server in the network over a first communication path and separately communicate with the ID node over a second communication path, wherein the ID node is operative to communicate directly with the first entity user access device over the second communication path but is unable to directly communicate with the server; providing, by the ID node to the associated first entity user access device, access to data collected by the ID node if authorized by an initial privilege, the initial privilege having been automatically provided by the server to the first entity user access device before the first entity user access device is provided with access to the data collected by the ID node and separately from an authorization to associate with the ID node provided by the server to the first entity user access device; associating the ID node with a shipping entity master node in the network by generating second association data on the ID node, the second association data reflecting a logical pairing of the ID node and the shipping entity master node; providing, by the ID node to the associated shipping entity master node, access to the data collected by the ID node based upon a transferred privilege, the transferred privilege provided by the server to the shipping entity master node during transit of the item to be shipped with which the ID node is deployed; associating the ID node with a second entity user access device by generating third association data on the ID node, the third association data reflecting a logical pairing of the ID node and the second entity user access device; providing, by the ID node to the associated second entity user access device, access to the data collected by the ID node if authorized by a destination privilege, the destination privilege provided by the server to the second entity user access device during transit of the item to be shipped with which the ID node is deployed, wherein the destination privilege allows the second entity user access device to access the data collected by the ID node from the ID node over a short-range communication path and which then allows the second entity user access device to provide the data accessed from the ID node to the server over a long-range communication path; and requesting, by the ID node, a software update to program code stored on the ID node from the server regardless of where the data collected by the ID node is stored. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the initial privilege comprises a paid privilege to access the data collected by the ID node. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the initial privilege comprises a paid privilege to be provided a location of the ID node. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the initial privilege comprises a paid privilege to track an item associated with the ID node over time. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the initial privilege comprises a privilege for the first entity user access device to manage where the data collected by the ID node is stored. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the initial privilege comprises a paid privilege to have the data collected by the ID node uploaded to the first entity user access device over the second communication path. 7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the initial privilege comprises a paid privilege to have the data collected by the ID node uploaded to the server from the first entity user access device over the first communication path. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the destination privilege comprises a paid privilege to access any of the data collected by the ID node. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the destination privilege comprises a paid privilege to access only a limited portion of the data collected by the ID node. 10. The method of claim 1 further comprising restricting, by the ID node, the first entity user access device from directly accessing the data collected by the ID node after the ID node is associated with the shipping entity master node. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data collected by the ID node while the ID node is associated with the shipping entity master node remains owned by a shipping entity related to the shipping entity master node when the second entity user access device is not authorized to access the data collected according to the destination privilege. 12. A non-transitory computer-readable medium containing instructions which when executed on a processor performs a method for multi-entity management of an ID node deployed with an item to be shipped in a wireless node network, the method comprising: associating the ID node with a first entity user access device by generating first association data on the ID node, the first association data reflecting a logical pairing of the ID node and the first entity user access device, the first entity user access device operating as a master node in the network and is operative to communicate directly with a server in the network over a first communication path and separately communicate with the ID node over a second communication path, wherein the ID node is operative to communicate directly with the first entity user access device over the second communication path but is unable to directly communicate with the server; providing, by the ID node to the associated first entity user access device, access to data collected by the ID node if authorized by an initial privilege, the initial privilege having been automatically provided by the server to the first entity user access device before the first entity access device is provide with access to the data collected by the ID node and separately from an authorization to associate with the ID node provided by the server to the first entity user access device; associating the ID node with a shipping entity master node in the network by generating second association data on the ID node, the second association data reflecting a logical pairing of the ID node and the shipping entity master node; providing, by the ID node to the associated shipping entity master node, access to the data collected by the ID node based upon a transferred privilege, the transferred privilege provided by the server to the shipping entity master node during transit of the item to be shipped with which the ID node is deployed; associating the ID node with a second entity user access device by generating third association data on the ID node, the third association data reflecting a logical pairing of the ID node and the second entity user access device; providing, by the ID node to the associated second entity user access device, access to the data collected by the ID node if authorized by a destination privilege, the destination privilege provided by the server to the second entity user access device during transit of the item to be shipped with which the ID node is deployed, wherein the destination privilege allows the second entity user access device to access the data collected by the ID node from the ID node over a short-range communication path and which then allows the second entity user access device to provide the data accessed from the ID node to the server over a long-range communication path; and requesting, by the ID node, an
