Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Retrieval of material from vessel lumens can be improved by electrically enhancing attachment of the material to the thrombectomy system. The system can include a catheter having a distal portion configured to be positioned adjacent to a thrombus in a blood vessel, an electrode disposed at the distal portion of the catheter, and an interventional element configured to be delivered through a lumen of the catheter. The electrode and the interventional element are each configured to be electrically coupled to an extracorporeal power supply.

We claim: 1. An aspiration device, comprising: an aspiration catheter having a distal end configured to be positioned adjacent to a thrombus in a blood vessel and a proximal end; a suction source configured to supply negative pressure through the catheter to aspirate a region adjacent to the distal end of the catheter; a first electrode disposed at a distal portion of the catheter; a first conductive lead coupled to the first electrode and extending along a length of the catheter; a second electrode comprising an expandable member coupled to an outer surface of the catheter; a second conductive lead coupled to the second electrode; and an extracorporeal power supply having positive and negative terminals, the first conductive lead being coupled to the positive terminal and the second conductive lead being coupled to the negative terminal. 2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first electrode comprises a conductive band extending at least partially circumferentially around the distal portion of the catheter. 3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the conductive band is disposed on an inner surface of the catheter. 4. The device of claim 2 , wherein the conductive band is disposed on an outer surface of the catheter. 5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first conductive lead is disposed within a wall of the catheter. 6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first conductive lead is disposed along an external surface of the catheter. 7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the expandable member comprises a flow-arrest element. 8. An aspiration device, comprising: an aspiration catheter having a distal end configured to be positioned adjacent to a thrombus in a blood vessel and a proximal end; a suction source configured to supply negative pressure through the catheter to aspirate a region adjacent to the distal end of the catheter; a first electrode disposed at a distal portion of the catheter; a first conductive lead coupled to the first electrode and extending along a length of the catheter; a second electrode comprising a flow-arrest element coupled to the catheter; a second conductive lead coupled to the second electrode; and an extracorporeal power supply having positive and negative terminals, the first conductive lead being coupled to the positive terminal and the second conductive lead being coupled to the negative terminal. 9. The device of claim 8 , wherein the first electrode comprises a conductive band extending at least partially circumferentially around the distal portion of the catheter. 10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the conductive band is disposed on an inner surface of the catheter. 11. The device of claim 9 , wherein the conductive band is disposed on an outer surface of the catheter. 12. The device of claim 8 , wherein the first conductive lead is disposed within a wall of the catheter. 13. The device of claim 8 , wherein the first conductive lead is disposed along an external surface of the catheter. 14. An aspiration device, comprising: a suction source; an aspiration catheter fluidically coupleable to the suction source, the aspiration catheter having a lumen and a distal end configured to be disposed at a treatment site within a corporeal vessel to aspirate material from the treatment site; a delivery electrode carried by a distal portion of the aspiration catheter; a return electrode comprising a conductive element extending around an outer surface of the aspiration catheter; and an extracorporeal power supply electrically coupleable to the delivery electrode and the return electrode such that the delivery electrode is positively charged when the power supply is activated. 15. The device of claim 14 , wherein the delivery electrode comprises a conductive band extending at least partially circumferentially around the distal portion of the aspiration catheter. 16. The device of claim 15 , wherein the conductive band is exposed on an inner surface of the aspiration catheter. 17. The device of claim 15 , wherein the conductive band is disposed on an outer surface of the aspiration catheter. 18. The device of claim 14 , wherein the conductive element extending around the outer surface of the aspiration catheter comprises a flow-arrest element.
