Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A turbine blade includes an airfoil that extends radially between a root end and a tip end, a platform coupled to the root end, and a shank that extends radially inwardly from the platform. The shank includes a cover plate. The cover plate includes an outer surface, an opposite inner surface, and a contoured face that at least partially defines a damper pin slot. The contoured face extends from the outer surface to a first blend edge. The cover plate also includes a blended surface that extends from the first blend edge to a second blend edge. The second blend edge intersects with the inner surface.

What is claimed is: 1. A turbine blade comprising: an airfoil that extends radially between a root end and a tip end; a platform coupled to said root end; a shank that extends radially inwardly from said platform, said shank comprising a cover plate comprising: an outer surface and an opposite inner surface, said outer surface facing a first axial direction and said inner surface facing a second axial direction opposite the first axial direction, such that a cover plate thickness is defined between said outer and inner surfaces; a contoured face that at least partially defines a damper pin slot, said contoured face extending from said outer surface to a first blend edge; and a blended surface that extends from said first blend edge to a second blend edge, said second blend edge intersects with said inner surface, wherein said blended surface extends radially outward to said platform. 2. The turbine blade according to claim 1 , wherein said blended surface comprises a concave shape. 3. The turbine blade according to claim 2 , wherein said concave shape has a radius of curvature in a range of from about 0.030 inches to about 0.060 inches between said first blend edge and said second blend edge. 4. The turbine blade according to claim 1 , wherein said cover plate further comprises a side face extending axially between said outer surface and said inner surface, said contoured face slopes radially outward from said side face to said platform. 5. The turbine blade according to claim 4 , wherein a first edge extends from said side face along a first portion of said damper pin slot, said first edge is defined along an intersection of said inner surface and said contoured face, said first edge merges into said blended surface. 6. The turbine blade according to claim 1 , wherein the cover plate thickness is defined between said outer surface and said inner surface adjacent to said platform, and said blended surface has a blend width of about 50 percent of the cover plate thickness. 7. The turbine blade according to claim 1 , wherein said cover plate comprises a downstream cover plate, said blended surface is defined on said downstream cover plate. 8. The turbine blade according to claim 1 , wherein said cover plate comprises an upstream cover plate, said blended surface is defined on said upstream cover plate. 9. The turbine blade according to claim 1 , wherein said damper pin slot is defined on a suction side of said shank. 10. The turbine blade according to claim 1 , wherein the cover plate thickness is defined between said outer surface and said inner surface adjacent to said platform, and said blended surface has a blend width in a range of from about 40 percent to about 60 percent of the cover plate thickness. 11. A turbine blade comprising: an airfoil that extends radially between a root end and a tip end; a platform coupled to said root end; a shank that extends radially inwardly from said platform, said shank comprising a cover plate comprising: an outer surface and an opposite inner surface, said outer surface facing a first axial direction and said inner surface facing a second axial direction opposite the first axial direction, such that a cover plate thickness is defined between said outer and inner surfaces adjacent to said platform; a contoured face that at least partially defines a damper pin slot, said contoured face extending from said outer surface to a first blend edge; and a blended surface that extends from said first blend edge to a second blend edge, said second blend edge intersects with said inner surface, wherein said blended surface has a blend width in a range of from about 40 percent to about 60 percent of the cover plate thickness. 12. The turbine blade according to claim 11 , wherein said blended surface comprises a concave shape. 13. The turbine blade according to claim 12 , wherein said concave shape has a radius of curvature in a range of from about 0.030 inches to about 0.060 inches between said first blend edge and said second blend edge. 14. The turbine blade according to claim 11 , wherein said cover plate further comprises a side face extending axially between said outer surface and said inner surface, said contoured face slopes radially outward from said side face to said platform. 15. The turbine blade according to claim 14 , wherein a first edge extends from said side face along a first portion of said damper pin slot, said first edge is defined along an intersection of said inner surface and said contoured face, said first edge merges into said blended surface. 16. The turbine blade according to claim 11 , wherein said blend width is about 50 percent of the cover plate thickness. 17. The turbine blade according to claim 11 , wherein said cover plate comprises a downstream cover plate, said blended surface is defined on said downstream cover plate. 18. The turbine blade according to claim 11 , wherein said cover plate comprises an upstream cover plate, said blended surface is defined on said upstream cover plate. 19. The turbine blade according to claim 11 , wherein said damper pin slot is defined on a suction side of said shank. 20. The turbine blade according to claim 11 , wherein said blended surface extends radially outward to said platform.
