Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The invention relates to manufacturing a surgical guide to be placed in a patient's mouth. The patient's mouth is scanned to obtain surgical-region scan data at a region where an implant is to be located. The patient's mouth is also scanned in the opened position to acquire dental conditions opposite from the surgical region so as to obtain opposing-condition scan data. A virtual model is developed using the surgical-region scan data and the opposing-condition scan data. Using the virtual model, a surgical plan is developed that includes the location of the implant to be installed in the patient. A virtual surgical guide is also developed based on the surgical plan. The dimensions of instrumentation to be used with the surgical guide are checked to ensure they will fit within the mouth by use of the opposing-condition scan data. After checking, final surgical-guide manufacturing information is obtained for manufacturing the surgical guide.

What is claimed is: 1. A system for creating a surgical plan including a surgical protocol of instrumentation to be used to install at least one dental implant into a patient's mouth during surgery, the system comprising: a computer configured to: develop a virtual model of the patient's mouth by using scan data of the patient's mouth; receive or develop a surgical plan that includes a surgical region to receive the at least one dental implant to be placed in the mouth of the patient, the surgical plan including a surgical protocol of instrumentation to be used to install the multiple dental implants at least one dental implant; develop a virtual surgical guide based on the surgical plan and the virtual model; receive open-mouth scan data of the patient representing with an opened position of the patient's mouth; determine a first available dimension measured from the surgical region of the patient's top or bottom jaw to an opposing region of the other of the patient' top or bottom jaw when the patients mouth is in the opened position; determine a second available dimension from the virtual surgical guide to dental structures that are opposing the surgical region to receive the at least one dental implant when the patients mouth is in the opened position using the open-mouth scan data; comparing the first second available dimension to a dimension of the instrumentation to be used with the at least one dental implant; and in response to the second available dimension being greater than the dimension of the instrumentation, obtaining final surgical-guide manufacturing information; and a memory device associated with the computer, the memory device being configured to store at least the dimension of the instrumentation to be used during the surgery. 2. The method of claim 1 , further including placing the surgical guide in the patient's mouth and installing the at least one dental implant through an opening in the surgical guide. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein altering the surgical plan includes one of: changing a type of implant used in the surgical plan; changing a location of the at least one implant in the surgical plan; changing the instrumentation in the surgical protocol; and changing the virtual surgical guide. 4. The system of claim 3 , further including: a display associated with the computer, wherein the virtual model, the virtual surgical guide, and the open-mouth scan data being displayed on the display such that the second available dimension can be determined. 5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the display is configured to display a virtual representation of the at least one dental implant and the instrumentation. 6. The system of claim 4 , wherein the display is further configured to display an altered virtual surgical guide upon the second available dimension being less than the dimension of the instrumentation to be used with the at least one dental implant. 7. The system of claim 1 , the memory device further being configured to store images of the at least one dental implant and the instrumentation to be used during the surgery. 8. The system of claim 1 , further comprising at least one scanner for obtaining the open-mouth scan data from a scan of the patient's mouth in the opened position. 9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the scanner is a CT-scanner. 10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instrumentation includes tissue punches, drill bits, counter sinks, a dental implant, an implant mount, or a combination thereof. 11. A system for creating a surgical protocol of instrumentation to be used to install at least one dental implant into a patient's mouth during surgery, the system comprising: a computer configured to: receive surgical-region scan data of a surgical region to receive at least one dental implant: receive open-mouth scan data of the patient with an opened position of the patient's mouth; develop a virtual model of the patient's mouth by merging the surgical-region scan and the open-mouth scan data; determine a first available dimension measured from the surgical region of the patient's top or bottom jaw to an opposing region of the other of the patient's top or bottom jaw when the patient's jaw is at the opened position using the virtual model; compare the first available dimension determined from the virtual model to a dimension of at least a first instrument to be used with the at least one dental implant; and in response to the first available dimension being greater than the dimension of at least the first instrument to be used with the at least one dental implant, creating a surgical plan from the virtual model; and a memory device associated with the computer, the memory device being configured to store the dimension of at least the first instrument to be used during the surgery. 12. The system of claim 11 , further including a display associated with the computer, the virtual model being displayed on the display such that the first available dimension from the surgical region to dental structures opposite the surgical region may be determined. 13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the display is configured to display a virtual surgical guide. 14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the display is further configured to display an altered virtual surgical guide upon the checking of the dimension of at least the first instrument indicating an unworkable condition. 15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the display is configured to display a virtual representation of the at least one dental implant and the dimension of at least the first instrument. 16. The system of claim 11 , the memory device further being configured to store images of the at least one dental implant and the dimension of at least the first instrument to be used during the surgery. 17. The system of claim 16 , further comprising at least one scanner for obtaining the opposing-condition data from a scan of the patient's mouth in an opened position.
