A prosthetic heart valve for replacing a defective aortic valve includes a self-expandable annular frame made of shape-memory material. A one-way valve structure is disposed within an interior of the frame. The frame includes a plurality of posts projecting axially from an outflow end portion of the frame, wherein each of the posts includes an axial post portion and a terminal post portion. The terminal post portions have greater circumferential dimensions than the axial post portions. The terminal post portions are preferably formed with concave inner surfaces and convex outer surfaces for conforming to the shape of a delivery catheter. Each of the posts is shaped for placement within a corresponding recess along a distal end portion of the delivery catheter for ensuring that the prosthetic heart valve remains coupled to the delivery catheter while the prosthetic heart valve is expanded within the defective aortic valve.

The invention claimed is: 1. A prosthetic heart valve comprising: an annular frame made of shape-memory material and being radially collapsible and self-expandable, the frame having an inflow end portion and an outflow end portion; and a valve structure disposed within an interior of the frame that allows blood flow axially through the prosthetic heart valve from the inflow end portion toward the outflow end portion; wherein the frame comprises a plurality of posts projecting axially at the outflow end portion of the frame; wherein each of the posts comprises an axial post portion extending from the outflow end portion of the frame and a terminal post portion at an end of the axial post portion; wherein the terminal post portion has a greater circumferential dimension than the axial post portion; wherein the terminal post portions are circumferentially curved and have a concave radially facing inner surface and a convex radially facing outer surface; wherein when the frame is radially expanded, the frame has an inflow end diameter at the inflow end portion, an outflow end diameter at the outflow end portion, a first intermediate diameter at a first intermediate portion that is between the inflow end portion and the outflow end portion, and a second intermediate diameter at a second intermediate portion that is between the first intermediate portion and the outflow end portion; wherein the first intermediate diameter is smaller than the inflow end diameter and the second intermediate diameter; and wherein the outflow end diameter is smaller than the second intermediate diameter. 2. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the terminal post portions each comprise two opposing projections that extend in opposite circumferential directions from the axial post portion. 3. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the terminal post portions have an oval shape. 4. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the terminal post portions comprise an opening. 5. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the terminal post portions are configured to retain the prosthetic heart valve to a delivery apparatus while the prosthetic heart valve is partially expanded. 6. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , further comprising an inner skirt positioned within the frame adjacent the inflow end portion of the frame, wherein the inner skirt is coupled to the valve structure and to an inner surface of the frame. 7. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the first intermediate portion is inwardly bowed and the second intermediate portion is outwardly bowed, such that the frame gradually decreases in diameter from the inflow end portion to the first intermediate portion, then gradually increases in diameter from the first intermediate portion to the second intermediate portion, and then gradually decreases in diameter from the second intermediate portion to the outflow end portion of the frame. 8. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the outflow end portion of the frame comprises a plurality of inverted V shaped peaks, and the posts extend axially from some of the peaks. 9. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the valve structure comprises commissures, and each of the commissure is sutured to a generally diamond-shaped cell of the frame. 10. A prosthetic heart valve comprising: an annular frame made of shape-memory material and being radially collapsible and self-expandable, the frame having an inflow end portion and an outflow end portion; and a valve structure disposed within an interior of the frame that allows blood flow axially through the prosthetic heart valve from the inflow end portion toward the outflow end portion; wherein the frame comprises a plurality of posts extending axially from the outflow end portion of the frame; wherein the posts are circumferentially curved and have a concave radially facing inner surface and a convex radially facing outer surface; wherein when the frame is radially expanded, the frame has an inflow end diameter at the inflow end portion, an outflow end diameter at the outflow end portion, a first intermediate diameter at a first intermediate portion that is between the inflow end portion and the outflow end portion, and a second intermediate diameter at a second intermediate portion that is between the first intermediate portion and the outflow end portion; wherein the first intermediate diameter is smaller than the inflow end diameter and the second intermediate diameter; and wherein the outflow end diameter is smaller than the second intermediate diameter. 11. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 10 , wherein the posts each comprise two opposing projections that extend in opposite circumferential directions from where the posts connects to the outflow end portion of the frame. 12. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 10 , wherein the posts have a generally oval shaped end portion. 13. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 10 , wherein the posts each comprise an opening. 14. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 10 , wherein the posts are configured to retain the prosthetic heart valve to a delivery apparatus while the prosthetic heart valve is partially expanded. 15. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 10 , further comprising an inner skirt positioned within the frame adjacent the inflow end portion of the frame, wherein the inner skirt is coupled to the valve structure and to an inner surface of the frame. 16. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 10 , wherein the first intermediate portion is inwardly bowed and the second intermediate portion is outwardly bowed, such that the frame gradually decreases in diameter from the inflow end portion to the first intermediate portion, then gradually increases in diameter from the first intermediate portion to the second intermediate portion, and then gradually decreases in diameter from the second intermediate portion to the outflow end portion of the frame. 17. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 10 , wherein the outflow end portion of the frame comprises a plurality of inverted V shaped peaks, and the posts extend axially from some of the peaks. 18. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 10 , wherein the valve structure comprises commissures, and each of the commissure is sutured to a generally diamond-shaped cell of the frame. 19. A prosthetic heart valve comprising: an annular frame made of shape-memory material and being radially collapsible and self-expandable, the frame having an inflow end portion and an outflow end portion; and a valve structure disposed within an interior of the frame that allows blood flow axially through the prosthetic heart valve from the inflow end portion toward the outflow end portion; wherein the frame comprises a plurality of posts projecting axially at the outflow end portion of the frame; wherein each of the posts comprises an axial post portion extending from the outflow end portion of the frame and a terminal post portion at an end of the axial post portion; wherein the terminal post portion has a greater circumferential dimension than the axial post portion; wherein the terminal post portions are circumferentially curved and have a concave radially facing inner surface and a convex radially facing outer surface; and wherein the valve structure comprises commissures, and each of the commissure is sutured to a generally diamond-shaped cell of the frame. 20.
