Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A pressure jacket for use with a fluid injector includes a barrel having a distal end, a proximal end, and a sidewall extending between the distal end and the proximal end along a longitudinal axis. The pressure jacket includes at least one engagement member protruding from a terminal portion of the proximal end of the barrel in a proximal direction along the longitudinal axis. The at least one engagement member tapers axially in a direction from the distal end toward the proximal end of the barrel. The at least one engagement member engages with a locking mechanism on the fluid injector to releasably lock the pressure jacket with the fluid injector. A taper of the at least one engagement member rotationally guides the barrel into self-alignment with the locking mechanism and axially ejects the barrel upon rotation of the barrel about the longitudinal axis.

The invention claimed is: 1. A front-loading pressure jacket for use with a fluid injector, the pressure jacket comprising: a cylindrical barrel having a distal end, a proximal end, a sidewall extending substantially circumferentially between the distal end and the proximal end along a longitudinal axis, and an open terminal end at the distal end configured for receiving a syringe therethrough, wherein an inner diameter of the open terminal end is equal to an inner diameter of the cylindrical barrel, and wherein the cylindrical barrel has an inner surface that defines an interior volume configured for receiving the syringe therein, wherein the inner surface is configured to engage an outer surface of a syringe barrel of the syringe to limit a radial expansion of the syringe barrel during an injection procedure; and at least one engagement member protruding from a terminal portion of the sidewall in a proximal direction along the longitudinal axis, wherein the at least one engagement member tapers axially in a direction from the distal end toward the proximal end, wherein the at least one engagement member has a pointed proximal end and at least one tapered surface that extends from the pointed proximal end to the terminal portion of the sidewall and tapers along the longitudinal axis to the terminal portion of the sidewall, wherein the at least one engagement member is configured to engage a locking mechanism of the fluid injector to releasably position the pressure jacket with a pressure jacket port of the fluid injector, and wherein the at least one tapered surface of the at least one engagement member is configured to rotationally guide the pressure jacket into self-orienting alignment with the pressure jacket port via contact with at least one guiding surface of the locking mechanism and axially eject the pressure jacket from the locking mechanism upon rotation of the pressure jacket via contact with at least one ejection surface of the locking mechanism. 2. The front-loading pressure jacket of claim 1 , wherein a plurality of engagement members extend about at least a portion of a circumference of the terminal portion. 3. The front-loading pressure jacket of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of engagement members are spaced apart evenly about the circumference of the terminal portion. 4. The front-loading pressure jacket of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of engagement members have a wave form or sinusoidal form. 5. The front-loading pressure jacket of claim 1 , wherein the pointed proximal end of the at least one engagement member is a sharp or rounded point. 6. The front-loading pressure jacket of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tapered surface is angled relative to a direction of the longitudinal axis. 7. The front-loading pressure jacket of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tapered surface is linear or curvilinear. 8. The front-loading pressure jacket of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tapered surface is continuous or discontinuous. 9. The front-loading pressure jacket of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tapered surface is planar. 10. The front-loading pressure jacket of claim 1 , further comprising at least one encoding device on at least a portion of the pressure jacket. 11. The front-loading pressure jacket of claim 10 , wherein the at least one encoding device is on at least one of the at least one engagement member. 12. The front-loading pressure jacket of claim 1 , wherein the at least one engagement member is monolithically formed with the terminal portion of the sidewall. 13. The front-loading pressure jacket of claim 1 , wherein the at least one engagement member is separable from the terminal portion of the sidewall. 14. The front-loading pressure jacket of claim 1 , further comprising a flange protruding radially outwardly from the outer surface of the sidewall relative to the longitudinal axis and distally of the at least one engagement member, wherein the flange is configured for engaging with the locking mechanism of the fluid injector to releasably lock the pressure jacket with the pressure jacket port of the fluid injector. 15. The front-loading pressure jacket of claim 14 , wherein the flange extends around at least a portion of the outer surface of the sidewall. 16. The front-loading pressure jacket of claim 14 , wherein the flange has a longitudinal stop surface configured for limiting a distance of a longitudinal insertion of the pressure jacket into the locking mechanism. 17. The front-loading pressure jacket of claim 1 , wherein the at least one engagement member has a circular, triangular, or a polygonal shape. 18. The front-loading pressure jacket of claim 1 , further comprising a cap removably connectable to the distal end of the cylindrical barrel of the pressure jacket, wherein the cap is configured to at least partially encapsulate a distal end of the syringe barrel and restrict a distal movement of the syringe barrel during the injection procedure. 19. A front-loading pressure jacket comprising: a cylindrical barrel having a distal end, a proximal end, a sidewall extending substantially circumferentially between the distal end and the proximal end along a longitudinal axis, and an open terminal end at the distal end configured for receiving a syringe therethrough, wherein an inner diameter of the open terminal end is equal to an inner diameter of the cylindrical barrel, wherein the cylindrical barrel has an inner surface that defines an interior volume configured for receiving the syringe therein, wherein the inner surface is configured to engage an outer surface of a syringe barrel of the syringe to limit a radial expansion of the syringe barrel during an injection procedure; at least one engagement member protruding from a terminal portion of the sidewall in a proximal direction along the longitudinal axis, wherein the at least one engagement member tapers axially in a direction from the distal end toward the proximal, wherein the at least one engagement member has a pointed proximal end and at least one tapered surface that extends from the pointed proximal end to the terminal portion of the sidewall and tapers along the longitudinal axis to the terminal portion of the sidewall; and a flange protruding radially outwardly from the outer surface of the sidewall relative to the longitudinal axis and distally of the at least one engagement member, wherein the at least one engagement member is configured to engage a locking mechanism of a fluid injector to releasably position the pressure jacket with a pressure jacket port of the fluid injector, and wherein the at least one tapered surface of the at least one engagement member is configured to rotationally guide the pressure jacket into self-orienting alignment with the pressure jacket port via contact with a guiding surface of the locking mechanism and axially eject the pressure jacket from the locking mechanism upon rotation of the pressure jacket via contact with at least one ejection surface of the locking mechanism.
