Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Aspects of the instant disclosure relate to electronic cigarettes. More particularly, to electronic cigarettes including a circumferential light guide that distributes light transmitted by a light source, and controller circuitry that variably illuminates the circumferential light guide of the electronic cigarette based on a user's draw strength.

The invention claimed is: 1. An electronic smoking device, comprising: a power supply portion removably attached to an atomizer/liquid reservoir portion; at least one LED electrically connected to a power supply in the power supply portion; a light guide in the power supply portion configured to transmit light from the at least one LED; and a plurality of LED's on a first circuit board and controller circuitry on a second circuit board. 2. The electronic smoking device of claim 1 comprising a plurality of LED's, the controller circuitry electrically connected and adapted to activate each of the plurality of LED's independently. 3. The electronic smoking device of claim 1 wherein the light guide is under a translucent area of the power supply portion having a variable surface texture. 4. The electronic smoking device of claim 3 wherein the translucent area has a patterned surface to allow diffused light to project out of the power supply portion at specific locations. 5. The electronic smoking device of claim 2 wherein the power supply includes a battery and the light guide is positioned around an end of the battery. 6. The electronic smoking device of claim 1 comprising a plurality of LED's, the controller circuitry electrically connected to the plurality of LED's and to an air flow sensor which generates a signal indicative of a magnitude of a puff by a user of the device, and the controller circuitry activating one or more of the plurality of LED's with a light intensity proportional to the magnitude of the puff. 7. The electronic smoking device of claim 1 comprising a plurality of LED's and a diffuser arranged to diffuse light received from one or more of the plurality of LED's to provide illumination along a surface of the device. 8. The electronic smoking device of claim 1 comprising a plurality of multicolor LED's, the controller circuitry electrically connected to the plurality of LED's, the controller circuitry activating one or more of the plurality of LED's indicate an operating state of the device. 9. The electronic smoking device of claim 1 comprising a plurality of LED's spaced apart longitudinally on a circuit board and the controller circuitry electrically connected to the plurality of LED's. 10. The electronic smoking device of claim 1 comprising a plurality of LED's in the power supply portion, on a first side of the power supply portion. 11. The electronic smoking device of claim 1 comprising a plurality of LED's on a first side of the power supply portion in a receiving slot of the light guide. 12. The electronic smoking device of claim 1 with the power supply portion comprising an elongated hollow tube containing the at least one LED, the power supply and the light guide, the atomizer/liquid reservoir portion containing an atomizer and a liquid reservoir, with the atomizer electrically connectable to the power supply. 13. A vaporizing device, comprising: a plurality of light sources in a housing; a power supply in the housing electrically connected to controller circuitry, the controller circuitry electrically connected and adapted to activate each of the plurality of light sources independently, the controller circuitry activating one or more of the plurality of light sources to indicate an operating state of the device; a tubular light guide in the housing, the tubular light guide having a longitudinal receiving slot on one side of a first end of the tubular light guide, the plurality of light sources positioned in the longitudinal receiving slot, the light guide extending on a longitudinal axis of the housing, the housing having a translucent area overlying the light guide. 14. The vaporizing device of claim 13 wherein the light sources comprise multicolor LED's spaced apart longitudinally on a circuit board in the housing. 15. The vaporizing device of claim 13 wherein the translucent area has a variable surface texture. 16. The vaporizing device of claim 14 wherein the translucent area has a patterned surface to allow diffused light to project out of the housing at specific locations. 17. The vaporizing device of claim 14 wherein the LED's are alongside the power supply in the housing. 18. The vaporizing device of claim 14 with the housing comprising an elongated hollow tube containing the LED's, the power supply, the light guide, and an air flow sensor electrically connected to the power supply, further including an atomizer/liquid reservoir portion containing an atomizer and a liquid reservoir, with the atomizer electrically connectable to the power supply when the atomizer/liquid reservoir portion is attached to the housing. 19. An electronic smoking device, comprising: a power supply portion attachable to and removable from an atomizer/liquid reservoir portion; one or more LEDs electrically connected to a battery in the power supply portion; a light guide in the power supply portion adapted to transmit light from the LEDs, the light guide oriented on a longitudinal axis of the housing under a translucent area of the power supply portion, and the light guide positioned around an end of the battery; a controller circuit electrically connected to the battery, the controller circuit electrically connected to the LED's and adapted to activate each of the plurality of LED's independently; and a flex circuit electrically connected to the controller circuit and to the battery, the flex circuit overlying the battery and parallel to a longitudinal axis of the battery. 20. The electronic smoking device of claim 19 wherein the light guide is a tubular light guide having a receiving slot on one side of a first end of the tubular light guide and the LEDs are in the receiving slot.
