Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A hand held spectrometer is used to illuminate the object and measure the one or more spectra. The spectral data of the object can be used to determine one or more attributes of the object. In many embodiments, the spectrometer is coupled to a database of spectral information that can be used to determine the attributes of the object. The spectrometer system may comprise a hand held communication device coupled to a spectrometer, in which the user can input and receive data related to the measured object with the hand held communication device. The embodiments disclosed herein allow many users to share object data with many people, in order to provide many people with actionable intelligence in response to spectral data.

What is claimed is: 1. A server-based spectroscopic system, the system comprising: a sensor configured to collect data from a material, wherein the sensor comprises an optical spectrometer configured to transform light into a spatially encoded spectrum; a communication device configured to transmit the collected data to a cloud-based server, wherein said cloud-based server is configured to analyze the data transmitted from the communication device; and a display unit configured to receive analysis results from the cloud-based server and present the analysis results to a user. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the optical spectrometer comprises an illumination light source; and a processing device; wherein the system is configured to produce a spectrum that corresponds to one or more chemical or physical properties of the material. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the illumination light source comprises one or more light-emitting diodes. 4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the illumination light source is broad-band. 5. The system of claim 2 , wherein the illumination light source comprises one or more lasers. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the communication device is a mobile phone. 7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the communication device receives the collected data from the sensor using wireless communication. 8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cloud-based server comprises a database of spectra. 9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the database of spectra is updatable. 10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cloud-based server comprises one or more algorithms for data analysis. 11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cloud-based server supports more than one sensor or more than one user. 12. The system of claim 11 , wherein a database is configured to support the more than one sensor. 13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor has a warm-up time of less than 5 seconds. 14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the sensor has a warm-up time of less than 1 second. 15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system comprises one or more applications allowing users to perform a specific operation. 16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is configured to provide to the users a method for developing applications. 17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the method for developing applications comprises a method for creating a new database. 18. The system of claim 1 , wherein the optical spectrometer comprises dimensions smaller than about 2 cm×2 cm×2 cm. 19. The system of claim 1 , wherein the optical spectrometer is further configured to angularly encode the light prior to spatially encoding the light. 20. The system of claim 19 , wherein said spatially encoding comprises a Fourier transform of the angularly encoded light. 21. The system of claim 1 , wherein said spatially encoded spectrum comprises a 2-dimensionally encoded spectrum.
