Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An aircraft includes a fuselage; a propulsion system including a power source and a plurality of vertical thrust electric fans driven by the power source; and a wing extending from the fuselage. The plurality of vertical thrust electric fans are arranged along a length of the wing, the wing including a variable geometry assembly extending along the length of the wing and moveable between a forward thrust position and a vertical thrust position, the variable geometry assembly at least partially covering the plurality of vertical thrust electric fans when in the forward thrust position and at least partially exposing the plurality of vertical thrust electric fans when in the vertical thrust position.

What is claimed is: 1. An aircraft defining a vertical direction, the aircraft comprising: a fuselage; a propulsion system comprising a power source and a plurality of vertical thrust electric fans driven by the power source; a wing extending from the fuselage, the plurality of vertical thrust electric fans arranged along a length of the wing and including at least an inboard vertical thrust electric fan and an outboard vertical thrust electric fan; and a variable geometry assembly extending along the length of the wing, the variable geometry assembly including a partial wing assembly extending from an inner edge of the inboard vertical thrust electric fan to an outer edge of the outboard vertical thrust electric fan, the partial wing assembly moveable between a forward thrust position and a vertical thrust position, the partial wing assembly at least partially covering both of the inboard vertical thrust electric fan and the outboard vertical thrust electric fan when in the forward thrust position and moveable to a position forward of the plurality of vertical thrust electric fans in a widthwise direction of the wing when in the vertical thrust position. 2. The aircraft of claim 1 , wherein the partial wing assembly is a forward partial wing assembly, wherein the aircraft further defines a longitudinal direction, and wherein the forward partial wing assembly is movable generally along the longitudinal direction when the variable geometry assembly is moved between the forward thrust position and the vertical thrust position. 3. The aircraft of claim 1 , wherein the partial wing assembly is an aft partial wing assembly, wherein the aircraft further defines a longitudinal direction, and wherein the aft partial wing assembly is movable generally along the longitudinal direction when the variable geometry assembly is moved between the forward thrust position and the vertical thrust position. 4. The aircraft of claim 3 , wherein the variable geometry assembly of the wing further comprises a forward partial wing assembly, wherein the forward partial wing assembly moves forward generally along the longitudinal direction and the aft partial wing assembly moves aft generally along the longitudinal direction when the variable geometry assembly is moved to the vertical thrust position. 5. The aircraft of claim 3 , wherein the aft partial wing assembly at least partially covers each of the plurality of vertical thrust electric fans when the variable geometry assembly is in the forward thrust position. 6. The aircraft of claim 1 , wherein the partial wing assembly defines a length, and wherein the length of the partial wing assembly is equal to at least about seventy-five percent of the length of the wing. 7. The aircraft of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of vertical thrust electric fans are substantially completely enclosed within the wing when the variable geometry assembly is in the forward thrust position. 8. The aircraft of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of vertical thrust electric fans includes at least three vertical thrust electric fans arranged substantially linearly along the length of the wing. 9. The aircraft of claim 1 , wherein the wing defines an aspect ratio greater than about 3:1 when the variable geometry assembly is in the forward thrust position. 10. The aircraft of claim 1 , wherein the propulsion system is a hybrid electric propulsion system, and wherein the power source of the hybrid electric propulsion system comprises a combustion engine and an electric generator. 11. The aircraft of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of vertical thrust electric fans are integrated into the wing and fixed in orientation within the wing to generate lift generally along the vertical direction. 12. A wing for an aircraft including a fuselage and a propulsion system and defining a vertical direction, the wing comprising: a frame; a plurality of vertical thrust electric fans coupled to the frame and arranged along a length of the wing; and a variable geometry assembly extending along the length of the wing and moveable between a forward thrust position and a vertical thrust position, the variable geometry assembly at least partially covering each of the plurality of vertical thrust electric fans when in the forward thrust position and at least partially exposing the plurality of vertical thrust electric fans when in the vertical thrust position, wherein the variable geometry assembly comprises a partial wing assembly at least partially covering each of the plurality of vertical thrust electric fans when the variable geometry assembly is in the forward thrust position, the partial wing assembly coupled with a slide member that is movable along a rail to position partial wing assembly forward of the plurality of vertical thrust electric fans in a widthwise direction of the wing when in the vertical thrust position. 13. The wing of claim 12 , wherein the partial wing assembly is an aft partial wing assembly, wherein the aircraft further defines a longitudinal direction, and wherein the aft partial wing assembly is movable generally along the longitudinal direction when the variable geometry assembly is moved between the forward thrust position and the vertical thrust position. 14. The wing of claim 13 , wherein the variable geometry assembly of the wing further comprises a forward partial wing assembly, wherein the forward partial wing assembly moves forward generally along the longitudinal direction and the aft partial wing assembly moves aft generally along the longitudinal direction when the variable geometry assembly is moved to the vertical thrust position. 15. The wing of claim 13 , wherein the aft partial wing assembly at least partially covers each of the plurality of vertical thrust electric fans when the variable geometry assembly is in the forward thrust position. 16. The wing of claim 12 , wherein the partial wing assembly defines a length, and wherein the length of the partial wing assembly is equal to at least about seventy-five percent of the length of the wing. 17. The wing of claim 12 , wherein each of the plurality of vertical thrust electric fans are substantially completely enclosed within the wing when the variable geometry assembly is in the forward thrust position. 18. A wing for an aircraft including a fuselage and a propulsion system and defining a vertical direction, the wing comprising: a frame; first and second vertical thrust electric fans each coupled to the frame and arranged along a length of the wing; and a variable geometry assembly extending along the length of the wing and slidable between a forward thrust position and a vertical thrust position in a direction generally perpendicular to airflow through the first and second vertical thrust electric fans in the vertical thrust position, the variable geometry assembly at least partially covering each of the first and second vertical thrust electric fans and a portion of the frame between the first and second vertical thrust electric fans when in the forward thrust position and at least partially exposing the first and second vertical thrust electric fans when in the vertical thrust position, and wherein the variable geometry assembly includes a forward partial wing assembly extending forward of each of the first and second vertical thrust electric fans in the vertical thrust position and an aft partial wing assembly extending aft of each of the first and second vertical thrust electric fans in the vertical thrust position, the forward partial wing assembly coupled to a first end po
